OK, I've updated the GPS files at the above links for the additional POI's as suggested by Sullivan.

I also realized that some folks, especially those with older models, might not want an extra 277 waypoints for all of the Lighthouses in New England on their GPSes, so I stripped those out of the route files (except for the ones we will actually be visiting on our route) and put up a separate file of just those waypoints for those that are interested.

GPX format file of just the Lighthouses of New England (as POIs): New_England_Lighthouses.gpx

Fast work, Fred. I see that you posted at 7:33, so this was all being worked on at the crack of dawn?

Day two: Bath is home to Bath Iron Works www.gdbiw.com BIW

Usually one or two ships dockside getting finished. Will be on immediate right (Kennebec downriver) of the bridge. You'll see most of the cranes when approaching the city.

When passing through Brunswick on the way to Bath, you'll see the now-closing Naval Air Station Brunswick (BNAS). The P-3 squadrons are now gone as of this winter, relocated to Jacksonville, FL

Will miss the Blue Angels air show.

Made a trial run yesterday of the majority of the southern-most Friday route from Kittery up as far as Portland Head.

Good thing I did as Garmin has no idea where the Kittery Trading Post actually is. Fair warning - anyone trying to find the start of the ride, it is actually at the intersection of Rte 1 and Rte 101 in Kittery, ME. I didn't notice when I was planning the routes out, but both Mapsource and my Zumo think it is at 15 Cider Rd in York. That's only wrong by about 6 miles!!

So I have corrected the Waypoint for the KTP, and that changed some of the early routing through Kittery Point. I also found that there is a detour around the Pine Island bridge in York and a made a couple of other small changes. The corrected GPS files and updated Day 1 route sheet are available at the same links I provided above (and below). If you've already loaded these files onto your GPS you'll want to be sure to fully delete the Route and all of the Waypoints from your device before reloading the updated files to ensure there are no conflicts.

BTW - I had never ridden all of these roads before consecutively. This will be a pretty eclectic mix of "touring", from the tight little beach roads of Kittery and Cape Arundel to the *****-tonk strips of Old Orchard and sections of Rt 1.

Even bailing out at the Portland Head Light and heading home (at 3PM) and not having stopped anywhere for chowder or photos, it took me 3 1/2 hours (with about another hour or so of route left to Freeport). There are very few sections in the first day where you can open it up and make any kind of good time. Also ran across a number of small town cops who, luckily, like to leave their radars running while they cruise around. But things should get progressively less congested on Day 2 and 3.

It was also some damn chilly and breezy going yesterday, especially later-on in the day along the waterfront. Stopping at the Portland Head was cold as hell. :cold: Sure do hope we have less wind and way more warm come May. ;)

Thank you, Fred !

People have been asking me for months "Have any trips planned?"

"YES!" I say. And I start with the "NE Clam Chowdah Run" :)

See you in May!

It looks like some folks are staying at the Brookside Motel and others at the Casco Bay Inn. Where is the ride leaving from on Saturday morning?

Canadian FJR

Since the Brookside is further south (albeit only 3 miles or so), we should plan on leaving from the Casco Bay parking lot.

I'm piping up here because I know that CJ is experiencing computer meltdown issues and may not be able to monitor the forum for a while.

Reading back to post #1, CJ says Saturday's breakfast at Mae's Cafe, 30 minutes up the road in Bath @ 8AM.

I'd guess that means we'd have to leave Casco Bay Inn at 7:30?

GPS Coordinates for the Kittery Trading Post as per their website (so don't blame me if you end up in Vermont  )

Geesh, Fred

Wish I had known of Monday. You passed my neighborhood on the way home. Just bicycle distance from Portland Head Light. (Willard Beach area at tip of South Portland, near Spring Point Light and Bug Light.)

I can make it to LLBean in 18 minutes on a good day, so you are correct. Freeport is just up the road.

Well, I'm sadly sitting here in my wife's office to hijack her computer for a few minutes. Mine has officially **** the proverbial bed!

Just a quick update: Good news is I have a new job, starting Monday. Bad news is I have to miss out on the ride  . I absolutely cannot believe I'm misssing out on this ride...... there just aren't words enough to speak of my deep sadness, anger, and bitterness about events that have taken place in the last three weeks. Alan, I can now say "I know how you feel!" and mean it!!

As for the folks here and a MASSIVE shout out to Fred- Thank you so much for helping put this together, I hope it's a great a time as I had envisioned. Fred, you deserve all the credit for mapping this all out and doing the foot work. For those not in the know, I just want to say that the only credit I get is for the idea of the ride and for the basic planned routes for the three days. Fred did all of the remodeling and touch-up work on this ride. Fred, thank you again my friend.

The perfect storm of events culminated in a **** place I've found myself in, but will fight back and get back here as soon as possible. I hope to be able to make next year's run if it's worthy of repeating you guys! Maybe the Cats and Daks ride if I can wing it! Fred, you got my number, so if you need anything or if I can do anything that doesn't require a computer, give me a shout!

Thanks once again, all, and have a safe, enjoyable ride!!!!!!

Looking forward to gettin my *** back here ASAP!

CJ

CJ,

Well, that sucks that you'll miss out on all the fun, especially as this whole thing is your brain child.

Of course, it's very good that you have landed a new job, and clearly that is priority #1. We'll definitely miss you on the ride.

Wow, that sucks! I mean the missing the ride part not the finding employment part. Hope everything works out for you.

OK, at the risk of being the boy who cried wolf, let's try this route sharing thing again. This time I think I've got something that will work for everyone, even those without Mapsource.

Here is a link to the route in "KML" format: Clam_Chowder_ride.kml

Right click and save the file somewhere on your hard drive.

If you already have Google Earth loaded on your PC (highly recommended) then this kml file will auto open in that.

If you want to try Google Earth (it's FREE), it can be downloaded here: Download Google Earth

If you don't have Google Earth (and don't want it), I have imported the above kml file into Google Maps, but it does not display nearly as fancy. The main problem with a route this size is that Google Maps can't display all of the route at once. You can access my saved Google Map file here: Google Map of Clam Chowder Ride

When I download this it's an XML format. Am I doing something wrong??
