I want to install a Techmount for the GPS but the stem nut won't budge. All serious suggestions will be appreciated!

Make sure you get a tight fitting socket with good quality and a long handle breaker bar. Add a good steady strong pull. Mine was very tight also.

I used the 1/2" impact on mine. It was quite tight but as soon as it broke loose it spun right off and the threads were fine.

I'm not sure if you're using a socket or not... If only a wrench, then perhaps the socket would make a difference. I have one, but it's at another forum member's place. You're welcome to it.

Otherwise, slow and steady pressure.

A breaker bar applied to it would give you better and more even pressure, so's not to damage it. Let me know, and you're welcome to borrow that, too.

Yep...big socket and something around the stem nut so it will be even snugger and won't scratch. I used a piece of paper which worked great, Teflon tape would work as well. That and a 2.5 ft breaker bar, just position it so you don't push or pull the bike over.

You'll need a 36mm 6 point socket to remove the nut. It's torqued to 85 lb-ft which is extremely tight, so tight that I thought I had misread the torque value in the manual and had to take another look when re-installing it. This one from Northern Tool clicky should work fine.

If you don't have a breaker bar you can always slip a piece of pipe over the handle of your socket wrench. I just put the techmount on mine last week. Like everyone else said, 36mm socket and 2 foot breaker bar and it came off easy-peasy.

Er ess yew kud chain thet byk tuh uh big ol' shade tree, then git yerseff a big ol' ball peen hammer en a dang ol' cold chisel en give er a good ol' WHACK! She'll open rite up en be awhillin' tuh come rite offa ther.

Et werks fer me, ever tyme. ;)

When I removed mine on my 2008 model, I went to AutoZone store and "rented" the socket...they charge you $15, and when you return it, they refund you, so its free. Maybe you have a auto parts store there that does the same thing.

I bought the socket at Advance Auto. Use Teflon tape and 1/2" impact. Spins right off.

Nothing wrong with using the impact to remove it. Just don't use it to retighten it.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.....and special thanks to RCL for offering to lend his tools. I got a breaker bar today, slipped it onto the nut, prepared to give it a big tug and the nut came loose with hardly any effort. I have no idea how I survived all these years without an 18" breaker bar.

Next question. Is the Techmount stem supposed to move? It seems that it could come loose and cause the GPS to flop, either, forward towards the speedo or backward towards the tank. ????
