I just now cancelled my reservation for a single king room so if somebody wants it move quicky.
I was just informed that this hotel is booked up now! But the Hampton Inn still has rooms available at $202, so you might want to share room cost with someone else there (970) 593-1400. The hotels share the same parking lot. If you want to cancel at the Fairfield Inn, please announce first here if someone would like to take it before canceling and the hotel said they would honor the swap at the $129 group rate. I posted this rally/ride March 6th so you had plenty of time to book.

Yes, I procrastinated too long in booking a room. And for those that know me- that is something I hate to do! I was kicking myself for not booking it sooner. Well, a huge thanks goes to Abercrombie... I was able to slide into the room he is vacating in the Fairfield.

Super friendly hotel people on the phone- I hope they are as nice in real life as they are on the phones!

I'll be touring a large portion of the state of Colorado in the 10 days leading up to this shindig. But I'll be saving the good stuff north of I-70 for this weekend. And then I'll be heading north into Wyoming after this. Looking forward to seeing a few familiar faces... and a whole bunch of new ones. See ya there!

well shooty-patooty. I just now called the hotel to make a reservation. Room block is full, and she also said that they are completely booked for that weekend. So it looks like I will be trying for a room at a neighboring hotel...
My mother and sister are coming home from California and Texas this week so I'm out but I haven't canceled my reservation yet. I booked from work and have all my information like confirmation number there. If you or anybody else wants to try to transfer my reservation into your name let me know and we can maybe make it happen tomorrow evening when I'm at the fire station.

EDIT: My room has been claimed by Julie provided we can make the reservation change happen.
My room has been transferred to FJRferrier. You guys have fun while I'm at home entertaining family, and no I'm not envious in any way.

A room (king size bed) at the Fairfield Inn is now available @ the original $129 group rate.
I saw it and grabbed it for anyone who needs.

Just PM me and I will give you the reservation confirmation # so you can put it in your name.
Only 2 weeks to go for the 2017 SW-FOG meetup in Loveland, CO.

As discussed here, there are many possible rides that can be had and the scenery is endless in all directions.

For Friday, I plan on the Walden ride and on Saturday, the Mt. Evans (top of the world) ride.

I am counting on Laverdaguy leading since he is the local resident and he's lost count after 100 times riding these roads over and over again. I'll bet he has his favorite eating/watering holes in mind that he will share.

Geez man, are you coming here to ride or to eat? ;)

This brings up a couple of things...

First, whats the crowd going to do? Some I know want to go on these two longer rides, but what about everyone else? I can suggest places to stop on shorter rides too I just need an idea of what everyone is going to do_Otherwise, I'll just toss out suggestions...

Second, I ain't leading nothing! I'm guiding, from the back. Ya gotta understand, that after riding these roads for over 16 years I quit stopping to look a long time ago. I ride till I'm hungry, stop for a quick snack, and ride some more. Not that I'm some hard core Iron Butt dude, cause I'm not, but I just don't need to stop and look all that much anymore. If I lead I don't know when people want to stop and enjoy the lovely scenery so I'll be in the pack following. Ya all need to pull off whenever you want and enjoy. I'll make sure we don't miss any important turns, but other than that it's all your show.

Also, anyone who's not thinking they want the two long rides we've been talking about then don't hesitate to ask about other options. We got options...

Good point. I haven't heard about anyone's preferences but I'm assuming it is mostly about the RIDE with an occasional stop to stretch at a particularly awesome viewpoint or anywhere you might deem worthy.

tic tic tic

It is only 9 days before I head out for the 2017 SW-FOG ride to Loveland, CO. If you haven't booked yet, I have secured an extra room for anyone who needs it and if not, in the next couple days I will cancel it.

I will be staying a couple nights in Durango, making a loop ride up 550 to Ouray, and over to Telluride, Delores then back to Durango. I've done this in the past and must experience it again.

Ride safe.

I put together some information about the rides and area.

Routes and food

Some help figuring the routes, and some information on places to feed both yourself and your bike along the way. If you have a GPS you should be able to use these towns as waypoints. If you work the old fashioned way, paper maps, then these will give you what you need to figure out where your going.

If riding the Walden loop route

From Loveland the towns you can route too will be:

Drake

Nothing much here at all, it's just a point on the map where you hang a right. There is a restaurant on the right but I think it's closed. When it was open the food and service sucked...

Glen Haven

Not much here either, except the best cinnamon rolls in Colorado. Stop in at the general store.

Grand Lake

Gas and food are available. Good place for lunch would be Pancho & Lefty's. All the way through town on the right. You'll have to turn left off the highway to enter Grand Lake.

Granby

Gas and food. I've never eaten there so no recommendations. The main town is to your left where the route turns right.

Walden

Gas and food both. River Rock Cafe has the best food in town. On the left as you ride down the main drag. Walden is my usual gas and food stop.

Rustic

Couple places for gas, and one restaurant at the Glen Echo Resort. They also have one of the gas pumps.

Masonville

Nothing of much interest here. Turn right to go to Loveland.

For the Mt. Evans ride:

Lyons

Gas and food. To continue the route ride west through town and turn left at the end.

Nederland

Gas and food. I don't eat here much so cant offer any recommendations in town. There are some places to eat on the Hwy as you head south too.

Blackhawk

This is a casino town. A mini Las Vegas. Food would be available in the casinos I guess...

Central City

More casinos but a cuter town. Food and gas here too. Overall though your best to wait till Idaho Springs.

Idaho Springs

Lots of stuff here. Beau Jo's, Tommy Knockers, and more. I70 runs through here so they have plenty going on. Plenty of gas options too.

Mt. Evans

At the entrance gate you'll find Echo Lake Lodge.

The road up starts in Idaho Springs. If you cant find it, just ask anyone who looks like a local. It's Hwy 103, Exit 240 off I70.

Reverse this from Idaho Springs for the route back. I recommend a different route though from the Mt. Evans entrance gate back to Idaho Springs. When you come back out of the entrance, turn right on Hwy 103. A wonderful road. Take this down to 151 and back to Idaho Springs.

There is also an alternate return loop shown on the map blufjr posted on page 2 of this thread. It's a ride down Left Hand Canyon to Hwy 36, and then north to Lyons. Left Hand Cyn is a nice road so you may want to consider this bit. You could use the town of Gold Hill as a routing point to help find your turn off Hwy 72.

Some general info on Loveland

Lots here, at least for an old Colorado railroad town.

We like our beer around here and have a number of good craft brewery's in town. None close enough to walk to from the hotel, but there is an Old Chicago restaurant in the Target shopping center (west of the hotel) that has a pretty comprehensive beer list.

Walking from the hotel you will find:

IHOP

McDonalds

KFC

In the Target center:

Chili's

Old Chicago

Panera Bread

and more.

Also in the Target center is a small liquor store.

Heading East on Hwy 34, over across the interstate, you will find a number of restaurants, and a shopping mall.

West on Hwy 34 (Eisenhower Blvd) you will find some more restaurants gas and a Wal Mart. Continue west to Hwy 287S (Cleveland) and go south to 4th street. This is the old town area. Not very big, but a few good restaurants will be found. Also three craft brew houses. I personally recommend Verboten which is west of Cleveland, on 5th street. Good brew..

From brew I'll segue into something people always seem curious about, but are afraid to ask. We are a bit of a curiosity to some due to our, shall we say, somewhat liberal views on pot. Or at least our state governments liberal views. So, in case anyone is curious and isn't sure how or what to ask...

Part of the law legalizing marijuana included the right for each city to decide for themselves whether or not to allow the sale in their city limits. Loveland said nope, not gonna happen. So, you have to leave Loveland to buy anything, but you are allowed to posses and use pot in the city. That's perfectly legal. The closest place to buy will be up in Ft. Collins. I asked some people I know who do use the stuff and have a recommendation for a place on the south side of Ft. Collins.

Since pot is still illegal on a federal level (yeah, it's weird) the banks wont do business with the pot sellers. Thus, it's a cash only business. No credit cards allowed.

If your interested, let me know and I'll pass on the recommendation. PM me, or ask when you're here.

And no, nothing has really changed since the law passed. No stoned hippies on the street corners or anything like that. Well, maybe down in Boulder...

So there ya go. If anyone has any questions fire away. If your interested in other ride suggestions let me know and I'll do my best to help out.

See ya all soon!

Laverdaguy, you and I think alike when it comes to rides. A ride through RMNP, for me would include maybe three stops. Two to check out the sights and one to do minor investigation or visit a lodge. Since I was just there in 2015, I could ride through the park with one stop at the Alpine Lodge for coffee, take some pictures, and use the toilet. A quick dash to Walden for lunch and then ride back to Loveland with a rest stop on the way. I am quite willing to lead a ride such as this.

What would a good time for KSU for the rides. Breakfast is from 6-10am.

I also checked on access for a hose to wash off the bikes there but they are without a maintenance guy and if the staff aren't too busy, one of them MIGHT try to make it available.

I was also wondering what time the rides might leave the hotel just for a reference point. Getting my wife and I out of the house and over to the hotel may sound simple, but it can take awhile. I'm sure Laverdaguy would agree that the morning's have been wonderful and cool lately, with midday being scorching and usually an afternoon shower down in Loveland.

Without getting Laverdaguy's feedback on this yet, my advise is to arrive at the hotel by 7am and KSU at 7:30 which should get us plenty of time to do the ride, do lunch and do photo stops/stretch and make it back in time for a shower and dinner. And for time outside shooting the breeze with a cold one.

Ride safe.
Pegscraper,

If you are going that way you shouldn't pass up riding up 141 to visit the Gateway Automobile Museum. Both the ride on 141 and the museum visit are worth your time.

Got a couple of mistakes in my post above (#127). Both in the directions for the Mt. Evans ride. I mention when leaving the Mt. Evans entrance gate to head back to Idaho Springs taking 103 to the east and down to 151. I rode up that way today and 151 is dirt, so continue on down 103 to the town of Evergreen and turn left on Evergreen Parkway (Hwy 74). Then a left on CR 65 and back to the interstate where you can get on I70 West to Idaho Springs, or the road to Central City and Blackhawk. After riding this today I would recommend maybe just returning to Idaho Springs via 103 west, backtracking the way we will ride up. The run on 103 to Evergreen isn't bad but takes us way out of the way for the return trip. Decision for later...

Then on the way back across the Peak to Peak Hwy, I mentioned dropping down Left Hand Cyn as an alternative route back. That's still good but I said to use the town of Gold Hill as a waypoint to find the turnoff. Not sure what I was thinking, but the town you want is Ward. Gold Hill is a cool place but it's in the wrong spot to help find Left hand Cyn, plus all roads leading in are dirt.

Sorry bout that...

And a further suggestion for the Mt. Evans ride. I mention eating in Idaho Springs which is fine, but I neglected to suggest that you wait till you come back down from Mt. Evans. You really should do that. The weather at altitude can be quite nasty and its recommended to be off that mountain in the afternoon. If you wait until after stopping for lunch there's just a bigger chance of running into heavy rain and lightning. Bring a snack on the bike to munch on and eat lunch later.

I got the Walden Loop ride penciled in but I'm not sure about the Mt Evans now, therefore you must lead that one since you know it so well now.

To the contrary, I am all for the Mt Evans ride. I was just hoping that since you are so familiar with the best route, you might take the lead. If not, maybe blufjr would lead that one too.

I plan to be there, I didn't go to the top yesterday and could use some clean thin air. ;)

I checked with the entrance gate yesterday. Entrance cost is $3.00 or National Park Senior, and all park passes will work. The guy at the gate said that if a pass is used, it will get in the pass owner and 3 more people, even if they are on separate bikes. Pretty cool, so all you old farts with passes get em out! ;)
