I am getting really tired of spilled oil in the back of the truck from crappy oil pans.

I used to have a pan much like this one:

The problem with this pan was there was a lot of surface area where the oil would drain and take it's time going into the container. After I would put the white cap on there would always be oil slowing moving from the surface to the top of the cap. In addition, it would find it ways to the spill spout and drip out while in my truck when the truck was in motion, to go drop the used oil off. I also hated having to wipe all the oil from the tops and sides of the oil pan. I was using 4-5 shop rags just trying to keep the oil contained. So, I went to this pan:

The idea of this pan is great. There was a large lid to cover any area that the oil came in contact with. However, this thing sucks. The top lid has ZERO ability to contain the oil. While in the truck if the oil moved or splashed on the lid the oil would run down and out of the lid threads and into the bed of my truck.

I could move to putting the oil back into the oil containers I empty. But, then I would still have a problem with a oil pan with oil all over it. This is a problem for me since I do not have a garage and store the tools and stuff in the back of my truck.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good quality oil pan that does not leak or leave oil over a larger surface area?

Thank you,

I use

which I then pour into a 5 gal plastic fuel can, like so

no spill, wipe out the drain pan after use, done deal.

Silly me...drain oil into cat pan...then pour used oil via funnel into used windshield wiper fluid container for transport to proper waste disposal...

edit...these implements commonly available only if yer spouse owns a cat and you use windshield wiper fluid.

At home I don't have a problem. I use a regular drain pan like the one Rad posted. Then drain into a 45 Gal drum I store in my shed. When that fills I call a buddy of mine that collects used oil as a buisness ( very luctrative I must add ). He pays me $20.00 each time. I even can add old antifreeze to it also. Old filters are saved until I can't stand to look at them, They pile up in my parts washer. Then I put them in a plastic bag and drop them off at the jiffy lube by my house.

When I have to service one of the bikes while at our cabin. I have a bunch of old disposeable turkey pans. I drain oil into one and then transfer into an empty plastic container, ie : 2 liter soda bottles, 1 gal water bottle. then drop off at a service station on the way home. I even put the used filter in a ziploc baggie from them too.

Great minds think alike....at least in Chicago :glare:

That's exactly what I do. I found the cat pan is short enough to fit under the bike even when it's on the side stand.

That is an idea, I had not thought about a fuel can.
Thanks.

I will still have to wipe out the pan, but I like that idea of the fuel can.
Huh? Why do you have to wipe out the oil pan? It's just gonna get oiley again the next time. Just find an out of the way place to stow it between uses. Mine goes under my work bench in the garage.

Oh, and I always buy my oil in gallon or 5 Qt containers, so the used oil just goes back in them. Our "recycling" for used oil is to bring them to the local firehouse where they use the oil in the waste oil furnace. Idea being I am helping to reduce the taxes in town. I'd rather find someone that would pick up 55 gallon drums and gimme some $$ like Tim. Now that's some fine recycling!! ;)

I don't have a garage, it is stored in my truck. Along with a pile of tools and scuba gear, a lot of scuba gear.

The oil mat is a good idea also, thanks

I use a regular oil drain pan and then use a funnel to pour the old oil into those convenient gallon jugs that the new Rotella oil came in (did I say Rotella? No, I meant official Yamaha oil  ). The local auto parts store take used oil for free, so I dump it there. My pan doesn't need cleaning unless I want to check for metal particles on a subsequent oil change, so I just throw it in the corner for storage. If I do need to wipe the pan, a quick pass with a rag takes care of it (rag goes into a grocery store supplied plastic bag for disposal).

I'm assuming you have a canopy on the truck? I can tell you from experience that lightweight things like empty oil pans will fly out while going down the freeway if the truck doesn't have a canopy! :angry2:

Yes, I have a shell on the truck. I do not let thinks go flying out of the back of the truck.

When I am getting ready to change oil I hang on to a empty gallon milk jug and then pour the oil out of the pan into the Jug. Then I clean out the drain pan. When I have several gallon jugs of old oil I take them to the recycle center.

Works for me

Mac

Pour used oil into jug/bottles that new oil came in then return with reciept to Wally World and tell them Wife/GF/SO bought the wrong oil! Recycle and refund what could be better! :p

There I go trying to be funny again :D Returning to corner!!
