I remember one time my '05 flooded like that. I thought the damn engine was going to come walking out of the frame. I just KNEW I had bent a valve or something major. As I recall, it did that just after starting normally. Just died, then flooded. I had a loose battery terminal.

The sound is caused by fuel "exploding" in the exhaust system as the mostly liquid mixture gets squeezed past the hint of an opening exhaust valve. The crank tries to kick back against the starter motor and all sorts of bad shit happens. It sounds horrible!

The basic cause seems to be low battery voltage. The starter begins okay, kicking the motor over, but after 1-2 crank revolutions the voltage drops. Then the FI system apparently goes brain dead and holds an injector (or two) open. Meanwhile, the fuel pump pressure bleeds a wicked squirt into the cylinder and you've got yourself a hydraulic lock condition, or at least one rich-ass mixture. There's no way it's going to fire the plug in that cylinder.

This is all great info! I am ordering a new battery this week. I'm still on my original battery and I charge it on a regular basis But, it has 3 years

on it and I see now that it's time to replace it. Especially after this episode. Everytime I think this Forum has given me all it's got to give, You guys rally and

impress the shit out of me again and again. I have made magic on all things mechanical my whole life, hence the majicmaker moniker. (I had to use the

letter "J" cause magicmaker with a "G" was taken be 51 other people and I didn't want to be magicmaker52). But, the world of Electrons has never really

penetrated into my brain. (No Moving Parts). I chose to go into the mechnical world cause it was waaay easier for me to make sense it it all. I chose well, you

wouldn't want me rewiring anything in your house. I listen to all you electrical guys solving peoples problems and stand in awe of it all. I guess everyone of us

was put here for their own unique role in life. Thanks again and I'll be listening to you electrical guys like a hawk!! VIC.

Glad it worked out and was not serious.

It may not be related to your failure, but I'm still going to point out that it is a poor regimen to start a motorcycle engine and then go in for five minutes to get another cup of coffee or don gear. I wouldn't be surprised if the problem had something to do with localized overheating, perhaps the bike staying on fast idle too long, enrichener jammed, or something like this. These engines don't like to sit idling for long periods after start up, especially running rich as they do after a cold start. Yamaha, mechanics, virtually everybody agrees that the best strategy is to start them up, then ride gently until up to temperature. This causes the least wear/tear on the engine, gets them up to temperature quickly but safely, minimizes the excess moisture and fuel that get added to your oil during the warmup period, and uses less gas. Gear up, punch the starter button, wait five or ten seconds until engine operation stabilizes and then ride (gently).

While in principle I agree with you, and have always done that with previous cars and bikes, I HATE the high rpm clutch engagement of my YCCS bike when the engine is in fast idle mode.

I always (unless circumstances decree otherwise) let the bike warm up until the fast idle period is over, usually just as 1 bar appears on the gauge. Perfect timing for finding and dealing with ear plugs, helmet and gloves, and to back it out of the garage.

So far, no issues after 3 years and 19000 miles.

The worst thing to do is start it cold, decide you want another cup of coffee (tea for me, please), and turn it off. If you do, you will probably post another thread here saying "My bike won't start" :eek:
