Thanks, Heidi. Anyone else? Just trying to get an estimate on how long it might take to go end-to-end on Skyline Drive this time of year.

They say it's 105 miles long clicky

It is definetly BEAUTIFUL

However, runs around and on the mountain tops: would need to watch for ice in shaded corners where it runs off the rocks depending what the temp was the night previous... up there (of course).

should be able to do it in about three hours if the roads were all clear, EDIT: or less depending on your willingness to flirt with the LEO's since they won't let us play with detectors here

can usually maintain 43-45 mph without too much problems with the feds and in a lot of stretches 45 mph is "cruising right along" :dribble: given the twisted and twisting  nature of the road

That link gives directions how to get to the top end of it...pretty straight forward

I think there is a 10 dollar (or so) entrance fee per vehicle--part of the national park service--well worth it if you can manage the time

It ends at the start of the BRP, exit there and follow the signs to route 250 west to I64 West to the cracker barrel directions

ENJOY

I had suggested that everyone bring a ride route and we would pick from that list !!
I've got mine....do you????

MixedUpMitch might be coming along also, if that's ok.

Looking less likely that I'll be doing Skyline Drive. Maybe later in the year.

Looks like Lorie and I will only be able to be there Sat. Daughter Katie is home from JMU - well, came home Fri night and left Mon for Norfolk, read VA beach. She and her roommate will be coming back home late Sat night and going back to school Sun morning. So, will be there for lunch, ride, and maybe dinner and then home. Looking forward to meeting all - wx forecast is cloudy w/high of 72!

Randy - I've ridden Skyline Dr from the Rt 33 entrance to the northern end and while a beautiful ride, it isn't made for a quick trip. If you have the time to spend, and surrender to the fact that the ride will take a long time and Ma and Pa will be going 25mph in the 35mph zones, then you can relax and enjoy the view! Heck, maybe we can meet sometime and ride it together.

I'm going to throw the Nelson Rigg UV 2000 half cover I bought in my bag so you can all take a look. If anyone else has something we might be interested in please bring it along. It's one thing to read about stuff on the forum but it's better to be able to see it. That said, I got the XL and it's pretty huge. W/O bags it easilly fits down over the cans in the back and easily covers my CB +4+3. Just ordered the Lee Parks gloves and hope to have them to show off - but, free shipping so I might not get them until the cows come home!

Of course it's cool if you bring friends... the more the merrier!

Also, I rode part of Skyline last September. I think that it was $5.00 to get into the park. Shenandoah National Forest rocks!!! It's a beautiful ride... but a time consuming ride.

David, are you still considering meeting me & riding in together?

So, the kids are in my woods, eh?

Well, it'll be good to meet you and Lorie regardless of whether you can stay the night, etc.

Looking forward to meeting you guys.

All: Unfortunately I will not be able to make this adventure. Our company was recently "merged" and we have been encountering problems galore. Am meeting with a rep from New York on Saturday (and possible Sunday) at the office to work on various issues. Sad, because the weather looks to be fabulous, and I was looking forward to meeting other FJR folks.

Hopefully the group will put together more jaunts in 05 -- Happy and safe riding this weekend! Jay

Hey there mister man! I've been waiting to hear from you. Sorry to hear that you won't be joining us. I'm going to uphold the Tidewater torch & will be at Cracker Barrel @ high noon on Saturday. I know that things have been hectic for ya'.

Hope to be doing some more rides with ODFJRRG in the future... BUT, we'd have to go back in the future to ride '05. Boy, you have been working hard... you missed New Years & everything! :p

David, let me know what you decide about meeting mid-ride.

I don't have mapping software (yeah, yeah, I know I should...) but I do have a home right here and a fiancee that grew up in Waynesboro. :D

I thought I would post some ride ideas here and if anyone has time/ability to load to mapping software that would be great. If not, at least everyone gets a chance to see them before Saturday and can look them up on a map.

These are only suggestions, of course...

Route 1 (short run approx. 2hours ---that is strictly a guess--albiet an educated one) I 64 E to exit 99 onto 250 E to Rt 6 S to Rt 151 S to Rt 56 W to BRP N back to Rt 250/64 at Afton Mtn/Waynesboro (BRP mile marker 0)

if worried about ice on the BRP (still some snow in places from what I'm told) then: follow above and continue on Rt 56 W to Rt 11 N to Rt 340 N back into Waynesboro

Route 2 (long run prob. 5 hours; again, a guess) Rt 254 W from Waynesboro to Rt 275 W to Rt 250 W to Rt 42 S to 42S/39W (in Goshen) to 39 W to 220 N to 250 E (in Monterey) to 275 E to 254 E to Waynesboro

Route 3 (semi-long run prob. 3 hours; again, a guess) Rt 254 W from Waynesboro to Rt 275 W to Rt 250 W to Rt 629 S (in West Augusta) to 39 E to 42N/39E to 42 N to 250 E to 275 E to 254 E to Waynesboro

The first route would work for Saturday afternoon, the second route would need to be Sunday because I imagine from my recollection of the amt. of time different legs of that route have taken me before it will be ALL of 5 hours to do the loop it forms.

42/39 have some fantastic 55 mph twisties up and down the mtns

220 runs up a valley between two mtn ridges and has some broad sweepers (55 mph also) and breathtaking scenery too!

250 from Monterey to Staunton Whoooooo Whooooooooo three different mtn ridges mult. mult. tight twisties up and down up and down, literally hundreds of turns

629 Small road that meanders along the Bullpasture River

Some of these roads were written up in the April 06 issue of Road Runner Magazine in the Charlottesville VA trip report (picture of Rt 629 on page 16 bottom right ). The author didn't cover the stretch of 250 out to Monterey--probally scared, he was on a cruiser after all.

Don't know what the locals will think with this many FJRs zipping past regardless of which routes we take. B)

how does this one sound...(locals - feedback? estimated trip time?)

from Waynesboro, down BRP or 81 to Buena Vista exit. Across 501 towards Lynchburg. Up 29 past Charlottesville. 33 Over to Harrisonburg.

Waynesboro to Buena Vista about 45 min on I 81(better to do 340 S to 11S than super slab though) BRP to Buena Vista (about an hour- it's mile post 60 on BRP map)

Buena Vista to Lynchberg via 501--not a clue but Mapquest says its about 31 miles (don't know the road for speed est. though)

Lynchberg to Charlottesville about an hour on 29 N

Getting through Charlottesville (stoplights etc) about 15-20 min on 29 N

29 N to 33 W to Harrisonburg about 1hour

Harrisonburg to Waynesboro about 40 min

So somewhere around 4+ hours...

However:

route 29: two lanes each side divided hwy (YAWN); stop and go traffic through Charlottesville - hard to keep group together; 29 and 33 go through a lot of Greene County- where the Deputies have an "average" number of speeding tickets to write each month {"quota's" are illegal after all}and there are countless stories of locals getting ticketed for just six miles over (esp. in the stretches that they keep at 45 mph to tempt you into speeding)

Except where 33 actually goes up and over the mountain it's two lanes each side divided hwy

340 S to 11 S (or BRP) to 501 E to 29 N to 151 N to 56 (or 6) ----would be around 3 hrs

MSLPILOT - if you want company on the way to Waynesboro tomorrow, I'm going to leave around 0900 or 0930 with Lorie following in the car. I'm going to hop on 95S probably at Garrisonville (exit 143) to Rt 3 to Rt 20 (maybe split to Rt 15 to 64 to WB) to 64 to WB. "Should" take around 2 hours. Just let me know and we can arrange a meet.

As to routes - I'll have precious cargo on board so am not interested in ice/snow - other than that, I'm not familiar with the area so anywhere is fine. Lorie and I looked around Waynesboro about 2 weekends ago (thinking about retirement locations) and went up Rt 11 to see our daughter at JMU; other than that we're not familiar with the area and are willing to go just about anywhere!

Since we're the only 2 up (I think) I'll act as the "XO" and ride clean up. Anyone bringing a tow truck; fuel truck; beer truck; maintenance van? No not for us, just in case we see any HDs dead on the road!

We're both looking forward to meeting everyone and riding tomorrow.

Jim,

Either 20 or 15 are very nice roads with many scenic views (horse farm type stuff)

If you follow 20 all the way to Charlottesville...where it intersects with route 250 head east on 250 to get onto I 64 (you will barely touch Charlottesville and shouldn't have any traffic probs.)

Also, as it stands right now, my precious cargo will be on board riding two up :D

toophast - Rt20 from Orange to CVille is a really nice road. I actually bought Maxine from Jarmen's in CVille and rode her home via 20. Glad to hear you won't be alone - Lorie will be happy about that too!

Am I the only person that has to ride in alone? Damn, the furthest out & the only lone rider. FRIG! I'm gonna' kick my local buds in the ***! Ha! Only kidding... the ride out to Waynesboro is a walk in the park. Would've liked company... it's always more interesting/fun with someone to ride with... but, I've done it b4 & I'll do it again!

Garry, I'm going to be limited with the amount of riding I do with you guys on Sunday. It's really going to depend on the route & what time we head out in the morning. Where we are by 12:00-1:00 or so is important to me. I'd like to be in a decent position to make a dash for home. I don't have a map in front of me so I cannot look at your routes right now. I've got a few hours ride ahead of me & I'm going to try to be home before dark.

Well, I'm sure that we'll be discussing it further tomorrow. I'll be seeing you all there.

Heidi
