Following the PDX/Vancouver Area FJR Owners Holiday get-together this past Satruday, I've been thinking about putting together a couple of other activities for late winter and early spring that may or may not be of interest. These ideas are highlighted below:

1) Red Cross Standard First Aid with CPR Course (Adult) (February or March): If we can get enough people interested (I'll have minimum headcount numbers ASAP), I can work with the American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter to set up a special course just for our group. [This suggestion is very self-serving in that I want everyone I ride with to be able to save my ass when I crash... ;) ] Look, if for no other reason, this stuff is always good to know!

2) Spring Skills Tune-Up with Team Oregon Motorcycle Training (March or April): Again, if we can get the interest, I'm quite certain we can get a group-only 1-day course organized (I had in mind their IRT: Intermediate Rider Training course). For those of us that don't or won't get much saddle time this winter, something like this is a nice way to warm-up those cornering, breaking and swerving skills in a controlled environment before the real riding season begins.

I'm looking for feedback, comments, suggestions, etc. Thanks!

Marty

Good ideas, Marty.

I instructed CPR for many years and am a total believer in the folks having the skill set! Lets get some info and hope for some interest.

The Team Oregon ARC training is great. I took the Pat's Acres course last summer and it was fun and very useful. I think the IRT might be too basic for our rider group, but the ARC would fit well. I know the director of Team Oregon well and will be seeing him on Saturday, so I can start a dialogue with him about setting up an FJR loaded class.

Thanks again for your help with the Buster's party. That was fun and I really enjoyed meeting some new Forum members and yakking with some folks I already knew. OCFJR needs to be supported to set up the next "Q" dinner soon!

Steve Garets? Steve used to work very closely with our Motor Unit when I was riding '99 -'03. A number of our riders used to instruct with Steve back then. Tell him you know the skinny white kid who looked like a 12 year old pushing a BMW around PIR during our track days. He might remember. Always seemed like a great guy and I'm betting he would certainly arrange for an FJR training day if he can fit it in his schedule. Not sure if I'd attend or not...not that I know all by any means, but I've had to take each of those classes at least 5 times apiece...maybe time for a refresher though....that Pat's Acre's course is a tire-killer...

The CPR is a good idea. I need someone to help me save Marty when he trips. :D

I am defiantly down for the ARC training at Pats Acres. Besides being in my back yard, I could use some cornering instruction.

Bill

No, Ron August. In fact, during the last PIR event for the boys in blue, he laid his bike down and screwed up his ankle and is just now getting off crutches.
Ouch! I wonder if he took Steve's job. I know Steve is still involved with Team Oregon, but maybe as an exec director or sumpin'? Ask your friend if he knows Steve - I'm curious what he's doing.

oink

Ron low sided a corner at speed and while the bike kind of had his leg pinned a bit, they were sliding along nicely until they hit a patch of rumble strips and that did a number on the trapped ankle.

I'll ask Ron about Steve when I see him

If the timing is right, I'm always up for Pat's Acres. I usually do this training every two years or so. Time to do another, as I did it in 05 with the then new FJR. What fun. The Insurance Company adds a little discount for keeping up to date training. 2yr I think.

Also, if we can't fill a class, we could share with another group. RCMC shares with the Goldwing folks. If anyone knows of another group that can't fill a entire class, maybe we could hook up.

I'd be interested in both. What's Pat's Acre's? If I'm already a Red Cross card holder can't I attend at no-charge for a review? Thought I'd heard that somewhere once.

Pat's Acres is a great kart track a couple miles west of Canby, with many corners. You will only get into 2nd gear once, (if you run at higher RPM's) but you will have mucho fun. You can probably Google Earth, Canby, and then scroll west a bit to the river and you should see the track among the trees.

Don't know about the Red Cross thing...

Sorry about that, I was told I had other engagements and that I couldn't hang with my biker friends  As it turned out the function was canceled. So I got hosed either way. I will make the next get together for sure. Looks like it was a great turn out.

Well, we wouldn't have been able to talk about you if you were there, so it's okay.

Team Oregon has just posted its ART schdule for '08, so if we have enough interested riders, we should probably try to get a consensus on a date and see if we can fill one of the courses. Canby course takes 18 riders. We would also need a volunteer to co-ordinate the entries, which is a requirement if we try to take most of one date as a group. I personally like the May and early June dates.

I'm in! 5/12 or 6/2 would be the best dates for me... Ok, so that's 2. 16 more to go!

I'd be a late entry in either of those two months. I will be in Florida in May and then back again in June. I don't think the dates conflict, but my checkbook might.

I'd be good for the May or any June dates. The October dates look good, too.
