It's a test, with women it's always a test, everything is a test and even if you are not scored on it immediately, rest assured you will be some years down the road when you have forgotten all about it.. :p

Beware!

I say go for it. You work hard for money and this is the kind of stuff that makes it worth the sweat. Oh, and does your wife have a sister.
But take a minute to think about all the stuff you have to move from the old to the new bike. And some of the fairing , windshield etc won't work.

I had to work out a plan with my dealer so that I could have both bikes for three days so that I could move shocks, forks, headed grips, gps mounts, etc.
But he doesn't have the money. He hasn't worked for it yet. If he goes into debt .. he's promising to work hard for it in the future.

I'm not convinced a 2014 will make him $7500 worth happier than the bike he's riding now, especially if that means making payments every month.
It will if he has a bike with 50,000 miles, not 150,000 and is paid for when he retires. That's why I upgraded to the 2010.

Beware!
DING, DING, DING!! No more calls please, we have a winner!

You are looking at this all wrong. You are not spending $15k on a 2014. This is because marriage is a partnership. You are spending $7500 and She is spending $7500. The bike will be half hers!

Heaven help you if she is one of those wives that keeps score on the spending. I have seen so many marriages ruined behind, "Well YOU spent $XYZ money on (fill in the blank), so I deserve to spend the same amount on something for me! I grit my teeth when I hear that BS.

Ha! You guys are hilarious.

I'm NOT buying a new FJR any time soon. I plan on wearing this one out. She certainly is in a strange mood today though.

As for the "You spent $$$, I get to spend $$$" I got a funny story on that one.

My wife is a HUGE Dallas Cowboys fan (I know, right? What kind of craziness did I marry?) so several years ago I got my bonus in April. We have a bad deal of not being able to keep secrets from one another. Sometimes that's good, but it sucks for buying gifts. I bought us season tickets for the Cowboys and kept that secret till her birthday in August.

When I told her about it on her birthday I said "I've been keeping this one a secret since April!" Then she asked "Wait, you bought this with your bonus? I thought you blew your bonus on stupid motorcycle stuff, I've been pissed at you all summer!"

And that was my ticket to go buy some "Stupid motorcycle stuff."

So no, I'm not buying a new FJR. I did try to see if she'd let me add my buddy's superduke to the garage that the ******* has for sale since he's waiting on deliver of his 1290 superduke. No dice.

I am going to Austin on Sunday though. Her only provision is that if I get close enough, I have to kiss Rossi for her. If I can get close enough, I might kiss him for me.

My wife told me that if I bought one more bike she would leave me. So I bought another bike and sure enough she left me.

It only cost 77% of my net worth.

Dam, that was an expensive bike,

I guess the phrase "It's cheaper to keep her" also applies when you are talking about motorcycles.

When I bought the Duc many years ago it cost me a central a/c install. The Feej? That was a pool I was fighting against for several years. When I saw the invoice she simply asked, "What are gonna say about it?" "Um, where do you want to put it?" Had to take down a big sweet gum tree too.

I started saving for my '04 in '02. In the dark ages people had to put down a $500 non refundable deposit and wait 6 months or more for delivery. No dealers in the North East had a FJR on the floor so you had to take a leap of faith and buy a sight unseen, no seat time, no hands on motorcycle for $11k.

Pillion and I had been going to all the dealers to try any bike even close to a S/T to check them out. Then in a miracle, a bike shop in Concord NH said that they just got a customer's FJR and would be putting it together and gave me a date to stop by and see it. On a freezing *** cold January day we stopped by a Honda dealer and gave a ST a serious sitting then went to the Yamaha dealer and did the same for the FJR. FJR GOOD! Pillion liked, me likie too. I had saved 100% of the purchase price, I was going to come back in a few weeks and negotiate a deal, and all in the world was good. Then out of the blue I found myself unemployed (I quit) and now the world sucked. I refused to dip into my savings in the face of the unknown. So, pillion did what any dedicated biker would do, she bought the bike for us (cash)

Have you checked her car for any large new dents? How does the credit card statement look? I am suspicious she is working to counter a bad mood inducing event.

Wowsers. That's a story I never heard before from you, and I thought I had heard them all most . So now, after all these years you are revealing that you are Helen's gigolo, and she is your sugar momma?

Now, back to the OP, you guys responding have all made a mistake, and I think maybe Jasen has too. Let's re-cap: She said "Time for a new one!"

Nobody ever said you had to trade in your sparkly new, w/a paltry 50k miles on it, only my an old lady/man on sunny weekends AE.

What she was telling you was to go out and buy a new second bike! Keep the AE and buy yourself another one that will help you deal with the advanced age of your old FJR (and yourself) in these middle aged years.

As for Bounce's retirement doom and gloom... How old are you now, and how old do you expect to get? And most importantly, how much coin do you need to leave for your old lady when you check out?

I would never forfeit enjoyment of my life for the promise of a wonderful retirement. Lots'a guys never make it there.

(1) That didn't begin to balance the scale, nor was the money from working (there are other ways honest income can befall/windfall a person). Even though she handed over the money bag there was repayment because I went to work right away.

(2) Pillion says the world works backwards. Nobody young should work. While a person is at their prime they should live, love, experience, embrace, see, do while they are fit and prime. Once you get old (when does that start?) you go to work with experience, wisdom and wiseness and pay back your debts. Dunno if that would work but the concept is good :)
