Pillion Knee Pain Question

I'll be coming out with my passenger floorboards in a week or so, these might help. I get pain in my knees on long trips in the pilots seat. Nothing short of stopping and stretching seems to help. Tight pants, socks, shoes can effect circulation, so make sure nothing is too tight.

Sometimes doing a " isometric exercise" can help...meaning you "press" down on the pegs with your feet as hard as you can..(but not letting your *** come off the seat) , then relaxing. Then Repeat...

Its difficult for the passenger to stretch out their legs while riding without upseting the pilot , but you might be able to work out a signal so he is ready for what ever you worked out before hand.

My SO and I rode 400 miles yesterday and she said that her knees hurt at the end. I asked her what she thought it was and she said that her knees were ahead of her feet; so they were too bent.

Not sure what we will dobut "pain" is no fun.

Sherri, we've got some peg extenders from Cycle-istic that move the pegs forward, down, and out (kinda like me, down and out). Kind of a drag 'cause they do, well before the driver's pegs, but they do allow more leg extension. Let me know if you want to try swaping pegs to check them out.

My right knee used to absolutely ache until I had the meniscus repaired. Now the knee only freakin' hurts, which is a huge improvement. Work on Andrew to share his pegs. On long HD FLHTCU rides (think GoldWing-like), I would regularly move my feet to the forward set allowing the pillion to use the rider pegs (or floorboards). After some practice, the pillion knows when to bring the feet back due to road, traffic, or other conditions.

At the very least, let 'drew know you need to wiggle about, stick the leg out (have fun with that Rad) then assume the normal riding position.. hah! :p . Oh, and routinely crush about 10 advil into the CamelBack so I'm getting dosed all day long...

I've had 2 knee surgeries to repair damaged meniscus, after the second surgery I continued to have pain on the interior of my right knee just below the knee cap. After several weeks of physical therapy we figured out my pain was actually coming from my Hamstring. Most guys seem to have problems with their Hamstrings being too tight, I'd try stretching yours out before your next ride, see if it helps.

Have fun with this one Radman :p

Hm.....I've got an idea that involves a swing set but....nah...I'll save that one for later. I've had several riders that went on some hundred mile rides with me and they never complained about the legs hurting...just the lower back being sore. One rider in minne complained that her right knee hurt...maybe the same thing....

I do agree that moving my legs around while on the bike BEFORE I start feeling the pain would probably be the smart thing to do. And, really, I do know when not to do these things - I'm a fairly good passenger, Andrew says so. :)
Thanks for the input!

How about have Andrew massage your legs @ every stop for 5-10 minutes.....(oops....crap did I type that out loud? .....sorry Andrew ;) )
Hey, that sounds like a good plan to me! I'll be sure that we work that into our stops. hehehehe lucky me! :D

Sherri, my wife has degenerative knee problems and has had those issues for as long as we've been married, oh 18 years now and counting. Due to that condition she can not ride long distances without experiencing knee pain (we have the extenders too). However, I have been thinking about maybe getting the Wildbill hwy pegs and under the right conditions, during long hwy/interstate conditions with good visibility, so as to not expect any sudden unexpected changes in riding, I would be able to put my feet on the Wildbill pegs and allow her to stretch her legs to the driver pegs, if only for a short while, that should give her some real needed relief. It's just a thought, someone else on the board may explain why that is not such a good idea, but I would like to think that so long as the hwy is clear, traffic is light, doing such would not pose a safety concern.
Mike-H also suggested that, as he has the Wildbill hwy pegs too, and Penny uses the driver pegs to stretch her legs... I spoke to Andrew about that, but he doesn't like the hwy peg idea... :( so... I guess I'm gonna have to figure something else out.
Welp, I could see some concerns. A wrong slip of the foot, a touch of the shifter down or a pat of the rear break all unexpected by the driver could post some concern at 75-80 mph--it would me especially while riding 2 up which I don't do a lot of.

Sherri,

Diane & I use this system a lot, you work on Andrew to fit the Wild Bill pegs so you have room to move about and flex the knees a little,,,,,,,, hell we'll all pester him next ride !! :D

Like others have said , a little Motrin or Advil before the 800 mile days will help also !! B)

Do I understand you correctly that these peg extenders would drag before the driver's pegs would? I am not sure that would be a good thing, since Andrew likes the twisties and leaning... I could just imagine the first time one of my pegs were to drag...!

Sherri,
It seems like for the pillion there aren't a whole lot of options for leg movement short of the periodic straight leg stretch. I have notoriously bad knees and when they are acting up I wear ace knee braces(?)....you know the ones with stretchy material. It helps me tremendously to put on some more mileage as the driver so I'm sure they would help you as the pillion. Its worth the 12 bucks or so to give it a shot. My pillion (Michelle) only complains about the pain to the inside of her thighs after a long ride.....there you go, that sentence alone should get the heat off of your original post and put it onto me. <_< Your welcome.

Get High way pegs on then as the rider moves to them move to theirs as long as you are aware of what is happening and can move them at a moments notice I guess for emergencies, otherwise you could probably let them hang off the pegs

Day-em! And here I'm thinking were being tough on old Freddy! Yikes!

Sherri, sweetie, I'm thinking that your lower back problem may be affecting your knees too - especially after being relegated to the pretzel position for 9 hours. As someone said before, a good dose of Advil or the like will do wonders as the day wears on. I don't know if it's possible for you, but Patti used to stand on the boards while pillion on the Wing to get a stretch.

But then again, wada I know, I can't even stand up in my own kitchen!

Thanks! I appreciate the support! :D

I don't want him to have to add something to his bike that he doesn't want though... I would feel bad.

I guess I'll start with Advil and stretching my legs out before I feel the pain and see if that works. If not, well, maybe I'll drive the car. :)

Having ridden as far as we did I did not find that I was anywhere near able to reach the brake or shifter intentionally or not... (and I tried)

Sherri,

It could happen when you wear too tight protection gear on the knees.

Sometimes even too tight short socks could cause pain in the knees after 3 or 4 hours of riding.

And, of course, do some simple flex excersises at stops.

Good luck.
+ 1 per my Debs

What kind of pants do you wear when you ride? Reason I ask is my wife experiences knee pain when riding. Her problem comes from the knee armor in her pants pushing against her knee caps. Also, I don't have an FJR yet so my bike is not as comfortable. She's about your height also.
Do you try taking Motrin or Advil before a long distance ride? I know that helps many people.
Also +1 per Debs

She eventually went & bought all new pants (summer & winter ones) which fixed her aches.

Ladies First Gear Mesh 11 - summer

Frank Thomas (Lady Rider?) - winter

Good luck Sherri

i feel your pain Sherri. literally. every time i ride. front seat or back. no idea how to fix it. it was worse when i was in reno and rode behind bearly flying than when i drive. i'm curious if the pain would decrease riding an 06 instead of an 05 because they moved the footpegs. maybe someday i'll let someone take me for a ride on my bike and then i'll know. ha! yeah right!

Time out. Sherri mentioned the WB pegs to me in regards to my hot balls. She said Mike cools off his hot balls with Wild Bill.

I said I wasn't interested in that.

Now that I know this is all for my wife's comfort, I'll get them ugly highway pegs and put them on my purdy FJR. Now back off all you vultures!

Will these also work with the MCL peg extenders? I am very interested in seeing your passenger floor board solution!!! PM me when you post up (if you can remember)

Click here to check 'em out! I'm gonna keep mine a bit longer, still optomistic.

I am not familar with the MCL extenders, but as long as they still use the stock footpeg , they should work.

I wrote your ID down and will pm you later.
