I am doing a cross country trip and will be in this area around 5/9-10. Since I don't really know the area I would like to avoid obviously stupid areas where I'm likely to run into snow/ice/sea monsters. If you have any suggestions please let them fly. I wouldn't mind a lunch friend/ride along if it works into anyone's schedule. Thanks, George

Not going to use the northern route-it goes into high country.

George,

Where the hell are the rest of the maps? We wanna see!! For those of us unfortunate enough to not be able to make such a sojourn, it sure would be fun to see what others are doing!

The only place I've been on your map is in the Yosemite area around Bridgeport, CA. Can't say enough about the beauty of that area!

Enjoy this trip and don't forget to post lots of pics or it didn't happen!

I can see retirement is going to treat you well, my friend! :p

I'm not retired yet!

Below is an overview of the entire trip. I haven't nailed down the route in a couple of places.I leave home the afternoon of 5/21. My wife is flying out to Las Vegas on Wednesday 4/27 and I'm leaving my bike there with a forum member while we do a little sightseeing and then attending a conference in San Diego. I'm then putting the wife back on a plane (Sat 5/7)and driving the cage back to LV, picking up my bike, and heading north. I will put you on my SPOT email list so you can follow CJ.

George,

It looks like you might be staying overnight in Walla Walla, just outside of Pendleton, OR. I own a restaurant in Walla Walla and would be delighted to buy you dinner and fill you with cool, refreshing beverages.

We can also tell lies.

Shoot me a pm and I'll give you my contact info.

Nice talking to you today Bob. I just checked the mapping software and it appears that it's about 1100 miles from LV to Walla Walla, so I would say it will be Monday night 5/9 when I will arrive.

Looks like a great trip !! When we were out west in Sept they had shut the Going to Sun Road down due to snow. If you are headed to Glacier which it looks like you might be, you might have some issues with this as well. One of those plan it by the day things. We hopefully headed back out in August to complete the trip we started.

Best of luck and watch out for the forest rats !!

I did have the Going to the Sun road in the plan but have routed around it because I can deal with cold weather but I draw the line at snow (3-6" forecast for tonight in RI)

According to TomInCA in the Kali thread, this photo is a recent photo from CA 88 in the Sierras. Record snowpack.

Nice, I am so sick of snow this year that the desert is going to look good. I know that you are headed out west around the time that I'm headed back-have a safe and fun trip.

That picture is just two days ago near Kirkwood on Hwy 88. By May, that road will still have snow along the side, but it is passable all year. I think most of the seasonal passes will still be closed (Tioga, Sonora, Ebbetts.

We rode 395 between Gardnerville and Lone Pine two weeks ago for the Death Valley gathering. Road was open, and is not a problem unless a storm is hitting.

Just a note to the O.P. be sure to fill up in Lakeview, OR on 395 before heading north. There is no fuel for 135 miles once you pass town. If you'd like to loiter in California for a while there are a bunch of us here that could show you around.

You also...have a great, safe, and outstanding trip!

I don't think you'll have an issue...and even if you do, that's part of the adventure! :yahoo:

George,

Like TomINCA said there are plenty of us NorCal wanna be tour guides available to show you around. If you make it to the west side of the Sierra's I'm about a hour from Yosemite and some great riding. Being, "ahem" semi-retired affords me to set my schedule so I'm sure I could work something out for a day or two.

Thanks John. I'll see how my schedule shakes out as I get closer to the date. I am not retired yet and I will be out of the office for 3-4 weeks as it is so I may not be able to venture much more west on this trip. I also have to be back in RI by 5/19 so I can take my wife on the Maine Chowdah run, which is within her riding range and something that she enjoys.George

Hmmm..., U.S. 2 (MT, ND, MN, U.P.)...?

There was a time in the history of railroads when the Great Northern Rwy only went as far west as Minot ND -- the passengers had to get off there. When nearing the end of the trip the Conductor would walk through the cars and announce: "Minot, Minot -- prepare to meet thy god."

Good luck.

You're welcome

Just a note on the Going to the Sun road:

I've been riding to Hot Springs, MT with some friends every June for a few years now (usually Father's day weekend) and I have yet to be able to ride the road because it's still closed due to snow up high. We did ride into Glacier a few years ago to check it out and the weather was beautiful with totally clear roads at low elevation. It's just the HUGE amounts to snow they get on the hill take a long time to melt and/or get plowed out of the way. So don't plan on that road during your time frame. It's usually end of June before it's open.

What is the road/ride like on rt 2?

Understand, it's off the table,

Well, what I was trying to convey is that it can become a pretty tough trip?

I don't know your riding style and you may be a "Hell for Tough" endurance rider -- but, out-west on US 2 can really wear you down. It is a U.S. Highway -- so, it'll be maintained to a standard (and, patrolled). But: there are great distances out there, the facilities/etc. may be minimal?, and early in the season -- the weather (WX)...?!

It's not unusual to have 'Lake Effect Snow' in the U.P., either.

I guess I was just trying to offer a word (to the wise) of warning...

If it were later in the season ~ or, if you weren't on a schedule -- then "A-OK", go for it.

Good luck
