Top fuel is great fun to watch. The compression as they go by is amazing. And I saw an exhibition at Epping (NH) many years ago when they brought in two jet cars. They shut down half way down the track, but I still remember that!
Very fun post.
I used to live within 2 miles of the track in Memphis. Never went up to watch a race (except for the SCCA sports car races that used the WHOLE track...) but could hear them quite well from my house when they launched.

As for the jet cars...saw Art Arfons one time when I was a teenager in the 70's in Ohio. He only got to make one pass though as his chute failed and he went off the end of the track, thru a corn field, and over a bridge before finally stopping.

hmm....I also remember being impressed with a Model A street rod that, except for the wheels and tires, looked almost stock from a distance but could lift the front end WAY off the ground with ease.

As this wanders off course.....

Back in the day did anyone see EJ Potter run his motorcycle at the dragstrip?? It had a small block chevy mounted in it sideways with the direct drive chain (no clutch) running straight from a sprocket on the crank to the rear wheel sprocket. He would part it on the starting line, put the rear wheel up on a stand, start the motor and spool the motor/rear tire up, reach back with his foot and kick the stand out from under it. It would just broil the rear tire the entire length of the dragstrip. It was an exibition only type thing but pretty wicked.....just to watch.

Now I'll date myself a little: I saw an exhibition run at Green Valley raceway in Denton, TX, I believe it was 1961. It was call the "Green Monster." Jet engine propped up on 4 wheels, with a small cockpit at the front; no covering or fuselage, just an ugly cylinder with hoses and metal tubing all over it, like some scary sci-fi movie. Like my friends and myself, the track workers obviously did not understand what happens when the afterburner is ignited . . . the flagman had enough sense to make a timely exit after dropping the flag, but another guy was standing about 30-40 ft. behind the thing when it lit up. I saw him running and screaming as the vehicle SLOWLY crept off the starting line. It seemed like half the E.T. was consumed in the first 100 feet, but when the thrust finally overcame inertia, it was like a rocket sled on rails. We were at half-track when it screamed by, trailing a lovely blue flame, for a high 6-second run. These are the kinds of things a 19-year-old never forgets.

News Flash: The "Green Monster" was owned and driven by Art Arfons.

There were two Arfons brothers, Walt and Art. Link to "Green Monster" name history.

Attended two "Nitro Bowls" at the long-gone Fremont drag strip (before it was Baylands Raceway Park) circa 1979 or '80. There was a funny car there with a hydrogen peroxide rocket mounted in it. The fuel load was calculated to run out before the end of the 1320. Completely silent until it launched, then really went loud! It went down the track in something like 3.97 seconds, just about as fast as we could turn our necks to watch it. That thing was awesome!

A few years later, there was a boat on display at a local car show that had the same setup. The guy planned to try for the on-water speed record. Never heard if that lunatic ever lit the thing off or how it turned out, but at the time, there was already one dead guy from trying the same stunt.
