Does anyone know if there is an issue with mounting a smuggler when using a Givi SR357 mounting bracket?

I thought I read that it was not possible to mount a smuggler when using the SR357.....of course I can't find that post anywhere now.

I understand that Givi now has a new mounting bracket (SRA-2109) for a Givi V46. I think that this mounting bracket could be problematic and cause damage (cracking) of the subframe (hence the creation of Garauld's subframe stiffener). The weight is not distributed in the same way that it is for the Givi SR357 bracket.

I'd prefer to use the SR357 rack, but only if I know that it doesn't interfere with the smuggler.

Any thoughts/advice/experience?

The SRA-2109 doesn't give you the advantages of the SR357 - it just mounts on the existing plastic bits. The SR257 is a stout mother of a mount.

I would be interested to know exactly what kind of adjustments you needed to make. Please keep in mind that we're talking about a Gen III FJR. You signature (as well as mine) shows a Gen I. We are soon to be Gen III owners. We (ZOOOMM & I) want to use our old Givi V46 with a new SR357, but only if able to install a Gen II or III smuggler.

Please do tell what the adjustments were

Thanks......

ps. do you have photos too?

Not true! I have the 357 GIVI rack and the smuggler installed. Had to make some very minor mods but it fits just fine!

Gen II and Gen III are a completely different animal.

I would love to be proven wrong, but the Gen II/III smuggler fits tightly against the OEM grab rail/rack, which is quite a bit different than the Givi SR357 rack.

I thought the originator of this topic has a Gen 1 2005 FJR which is what I have. To fit the Smuggler using the Givi 357 rack I performed the following mods to the rack and smuggler:

1) Slightly compressed (relieved) the lower crossover tube on the 357 that the Smuggler has to fit under. I 'compressed' that tube on the bottom about 1/8 inch and about 3-4 inches along the length of the tube.

2) I used a dremmel to relieve some of the Smuggler fiberglass across the area where it fits under the Givi rack. Then I smoothed this area on the Smuggler and very slightly added some gelcoat to finish and touched up the paint in that area.

It fits perfectly and looks great!

Sorry , my error! I thought the question was about a Gen 1. I should have read the title closer!

Back into my hole for the Winter!!!

SkooterG,

Did you mean to say that Gen I and Gen III are completely different animals?

I thought that the back end of the Gen II and the Gen III are almost identical, no?

This all sounds to me like this:

If I want a smuggler on my Gen III, I need to use the Garauld Stiffie kit along with the new Givi SRA-2109.

Do we know if anyone have this particular setup on their Gen III yet? I see Fairlaner has the smuggler, but he has the Yamaha top box.

Q: does the Garauld Stiffie kit interfere at all with a Gen III Smuggler?
