Using an rd and a jammer is a risk but when you ride in Ontario where the police can impound your vehicle ON THE SPOT for exceeding 50km+ (30ishmph) the reasoning and the economics of it start to make sense. Take a look at your speedo when you do a pass on a 2 lane highway its very easy to hit that threshold and if you unlucky enough to get clocked at that moment .... you're toast....$1,500 impound fees even if I'm found not guilty at trial. Add in the cost of insurance ... I pay almost a 1000s buck a year (clean record) to ride a reduced biking season... well you may start to see my motivation
Sorry if I offended you with that clip but I wanted to show that the "dark side " out there. Oh yeah ... I'm not endorsing Blinder as a product .... its an older generation Led jammer as well. I'll delete the post after you've read this..

My original question wasnt meant to get into this kind of debate and frankly I've revealed too much
Why not just get the hell out of Canada?

I am originally from Australia, and they have some very similar draconian crap going on, it's small country (in terms of population) and they use traffic tickets as a full on revenue source. I just left, and have no intention of coming back, for anything more than a brief visit.
Yeah... I'm going to New Zealand for a 2 week biking holiday (on a 650 Vstrom) so I may never come back. Although NZ have some fairly strict laws as I recall.

They've lost all sense of proportion with Bill 203. It was sold to the public to stop a street racing problem we never had. 5,000 charges counting since last Oct and maybe 2 had anything to do with street racing. Oh and moving your butt off the seat is now seen as "stunting" and subject to same penalty.

Ontario is trying to give Virginia a run for its money for screwed up traffic laws

I'll bet you're the type that thinks you're immune, right? When you actually get a ticket, and with your thought process (as displayed on this board), you WILL get a ticket, you'll probably fight it to the end even though you deserved it, right? That's ok, not passing judgment on that aspect of it, just sorta checking.
Just know, that, at least in most states (but I think you said you're from Canada, so I don't know if this applies there), a reading from a lidar or radar is not necessary to write a speeding ticket. I've written several based solely on my observations and experience. Yes, I got convictions too.
Scott- I just want to thank you for your thoughtful responses and compliment your for the beautiful black lab. I'm a huge dog lover, and have "twins" who are part lab and part springer spaniel.

I just bought a radar detector yesterday mostly for my bike. I'm 55 years old, and with the exception of a brief stint about 10 years ago, never owned a radar detector. I get a ticket about every 5 years whether I need one or not. And I don't plan to change my driving style just because I have a RD. I try to run with traffic in town, and I'm very observant. But I mostly ride the motorcycle on open back roads with minimal traffic. What few LEO's we see are coming the other way, and I can only assume that have K band on all the time. My friend who I ride with often runs with an Escort, and he picks them up almost all the time. The problem is that he doesn't always want to be the "lead dog", so I got the RD for when I'm up front and we get a little frisky on some good winding roads.

We have an upcoming trip up through east Texas, northern Arkansas, then over to North Carolina, North Georgia, then back across to Texas. Any information on what to expect in these states would be appreciated. We will not be on Interstates at all.

OMG... another hooligan
What did you buy?
Beltronics 955. I didn't feel the need for the features the more expensive units have for what I'm going to use it for. Also, I have it on good authority that the basics of the unit are identical to Escorts now (they are owned by Escort). I've also ordered the high powered LED's from Marc.

Yup good choice.... the leds dont tell you the type of alert you're getting but you just need to glance down at the rd display/

Techmount has a nice unit that screws to the handlebar head nut

Thanks for the info. I have looked at the Techmount (the guy I ride with uses one). I just came in from sticking on some 3M Dual Lock on top of the clutch reservoir and mounted the detector to it. I can't believe there is any risk of it flying off there. It takes a hell of any effort to take it off when trying to. I'll probably wrap a velcro strap around it for redundancy, but I really see no reason. Kind of like magnetic tank bags. It concerned me the first few miles. But now that I have about 10,000 miles of the tank bag being held on with nothing but the magnets, I don't even give it a thought any more.

lol....I've used industrial velcro on the brake reservoir as well> It lines up nicely peeking over the solid fairing as well but it too exposed to the leos to do that in Ont and Virginia.

Back road Texas where there isn't much traffic, let alone cops, moving radar is likely going to be the enforcement option you will encounter. As such, a radar detector for those purposes will be ideal IMO. In fact, I would say, that with today's enforcement options, a radar detector is most effective against moving radar.

Thanks.

I've escalated my war against Ontarios draconian Bill 203 by investing in a laser jammer so I no longer need the RD to see down the road to pick up laser.
My question has anyone mounted their RD hidden low in the cockpit or in the storage cubby? ( which is too narrow without being cut)

I know about remote rds but I'd rather use what I have.

Well if you are able to, see if it will fit under the shield where the little cover is held in by only one screw and then just run wire back to your intercom.....

should work I remember them still working installed intot he dash of cars i had in the past.... may lose some range, but it should still work.... or glove box, but it gets hot there and that may shorten life....

Here in WA state, the WSP loves to ride country highways and use their instant on once they have a car coming toward them. My V1 has picked them up around the corner (when they shot a car ahead of me) before they came in sight and hit me (at a reduced speed now :yahoo: ). But sometimes they run with the radar on continuously, which I like much better :clapping:
