For those of you who don't know it, I had a series (3) of occasions in the span of about 200 yards in Colorado where my bike went down on the right side at 0-1 MPH. This happened on a really nasty "road" and the result was a badly scratched/gouged right rear saddleback, scratches/gouges to the right lower/upper fairing, a badly rashed MOKO slider, rashing of the right turn signal, and damage to the right rear view mirror base.

I'm now considering my options for repairing the damage, and was interested in what people here thought of the options. I've had the saddlebags repainted in the past, to match the original '05 blue. I also saw some of the repainted bikes at WFO-5 (like Rogdeb's red, and another black one) that made me consider that... and I'm also considering a custom paint job/theme that's rolling around in the back of my head. So what would you do? I really like the '05 and '06 blue look, but would like to subtly tweak it to make it unique...

Fire away...

Note: the last one should be "custom" paint job, not cusom...

Frank may very well have a whole different look come spring... ;) I'll bet by the third down you were saying terrible things like "golly" and "darn" weren't you?

If you're gonna keep doing that LD shit, I'd prolly just paint her up GB and call it a day. Otherwise, if you put $$$ into a custom paint job, it'll just get mucked up - Murphy's Law 'n shit.

That's kinda the internal debate I'm currently having right now....

Groo,

I found this site....

Custom Paint Jobs

Couple of choices. You won't get missed with the yellow one...

Or even better...

Saw the pictures of the "road" on the other thread. I would think $200 worth of paint and base coat. Along with a similar amount to a paint man would fix your blue parts. All told cheaper than total custom. good luck.

Interesting that you bring this subject up, for I have the very same quandary myself. A simple little drop will cost you an easy $500 in new plastic and parts. Hard to get paint to match in a touch up and even if I do all the labor, buying the paint and having someone shoot it is not that cheap either. What color will.....

Having gone through this, I recommend the following:

If you have panels whose shape is going to be difficult to repair, replace the panel. If it's just light scratches, let the body shop handle it.

If the affected panels all need to be replaced, the go factory and you're back to new. If most of the panels are cosmetically damaged, but easily fixable with a bodywork and paintjob, I'd go new paint, single color of your choice.

This is the route I went, and I'm very happy (aside from the actual paint job). The guy that did mine did a poor job, and I'm going to have it re-done eventually, but I love the new color, standing out in the crowd, and the thicker stronger paint. The yamaha stuff seems to be fairly soft.

Guess I could clarify... none of the bodywork is cracked/broken. All the damage would seem to be repairable by some filler and a good painting....

Gonna go talk to a custom painter tomorrow morning and see if he can put to paper what's in my head... we'll see...

I like the solid one color look. Just matching the silver panel to the rest of the blue looks excellent. If I wasn't a cheap SOB I'd tear it down and paint it bright red. I'm not much for real expensive bike art because it'll get road-dinged, and then I'd be pissed.

Now I'm wondering about a rattle-can from Color-Rite...hmmm. Just those two silver panels...

Dammit, I wish I hadn't seen that picture. And are those wheels black? Damn!

a paint job simply because i want to update the '03 lowers to the integrated signals and prefer a color that yammy doesn't import.

GROO - did i miss that post? Wanted to see the pix and all.. where the #%# is it?

For some reason I'm leaning toward Fire Engine Red with gold leaf trim, but first I need to drop it on the left side. Almost happened Sunday afternoon, two doors down from my house, right after parading for this picture:

I pulled to the right to turn around and, once I was committed to the turn, noticed a car comin' on strong down the street. Big brakes, then big arm & leg strain to bring it back to balance upright. That flag is a real sail back there. Gotta find one much lighter (and cheaper) that will withstand freeway speeds and can be replaced often (due to wear from the freeway speeds).

I voted "Cusom"

Only because, if'n I was in the same boat, and if'n I had damaged but easily repairable panels I'd probably go paint. And if I'm gonna go paint, I'm gonna go different.

I kinda like:

And if you are going to continue doing LD stuff like others have said it's going to get rough and take a beating. In the yammi yellow colors above that bottom swipe of black could easily be roll on bed liner to protect it and it would blend right in and look sweet.

Here you go Groo.....you can go here and play. Click on Yamaha under motorbikes, then FJR. You click on the bike, then go down to the sliding color box in the lower left hand corner. You can see what it will look like. :p
