I recently returned from a 2 week vacation in Hawaii and was able to complete the endeavor to ride motorcycle in all 50 states! I put on 250 miles while riding in Maui for a day. I covered all the "good" roads on the island including Hana Road which is 50 miles with 600+ curves and 59 1 lane bridges and Haleakala which is a 10,000 foot volcano that you can look into. It was a wonderful day in paradise.

I had to "settle" and do the ride on a Harley but it was still enjoyable. Anytime a person from Minnesota can get some "saddle time" in January riding in paradise is a good time.

Take a look at my signature for links to other recent trips as well.

Congrats !

Your ride is on my bucket list. Be cool if you would share a little more info... like...

How much was the rental ? Did you bring a helmet - or does that come with the rental ? ???....

I have a co worker who was born in Hawaii and he brought in a map for me to plan a SS1000.

Wondering if it would be a waste of valuable time (?)

Cool! I got my Hawaii ride in on the Big Island in October on a KTM.

I didn't do shorts and a tee shirt, but didn't have riding boots.

I rented through Eagle Rider. They have 2 locations on Maui and I believe 1 location on Hawaii (The Big Island). I did a 24 hour rental. Prices ranged from about $100 - $175 for 24 hours depending on the bike. There was a little confusion about pick-up/drop-off time when I called them a few days in advance to confirm my reservation so they let me keep the bike a little longer; I picked up the bike before close 1 day, rode it all the next day, and had it back when they opened the next day. Helmet was included in the rental.

I don’t know how you would do a SS1000 on Maui. I rode from 6:30 a.m. until about 4:30 p.m. and did 250 miles and I was moving most of the time. This route covered about ¾ of the road around Maui – the remaining section has a section of gravel that I did not want to do on the Harley. Many of the roads I was on were twisty, with single lane sections, bridges, etc. Not a place to make good time. For example the Road to Hana that I did; for most people this is a long day’s journey on its own. I did not stop and see all the sights along the road because my wife (who did not ride on the motorcycle) and I would be doing them again in the car when we would take our time and stop and see more things.

In my opinion, renting the bike was a great choice and I'm glad I did it! A great way to see the island. Enjoy the roads, the scenery, the views, etc. but don’t think about a SS1000.

I drove Haleakala when I was in Maui. House of the sun is the translation of the name. Really beautiful. I rode my motorcycle on Oahu while I was stationed there in the Marine Corps, So I have the 50th state covered.

Sounds like a great experience and what a way to see the island! I have a good friend who lives on Maui and said not to think about riding if I visit. His opinion is all the major roads on the island are pretty gridlocked during the week. Since there's so few main roads, everyone's using them and it's kind of a mess. I was hoping that some of the outer roads would be decent and not too busy... and the pricing was pretty fair! :)

Thanks for the report!

Wifey and I went to Hawaii in 1989 - including Maui. We drove to the top of that volcano at 0-dark thirty to watch the sun rise. Incredible experience. We also snorkled on a desolate beach with black sand - it was fantastic. We had to swim off shore to get to the reef and fish, but it was well worth it.

Glad you enjoyed your trip.

I drove (rental car) the road to Hana as everyone says it's a must do and has many beautiful places to see. I found the road itself more stressful than fun. Think of a one lane forest service road with two-way traffic with very tight, blind corners and you'll start getting an idea of it. And the locals cut the corners at a pretty quick pace. Finally made it there and back and my gf got me a t-shirt saying " I survived the road to Hana".

Only problem with Maui is there's a 40MPH speed limit on the whole damn island!!!

I bet riding a scooter is more fun because it seems faster, I personally couldn't have fun riding a motorcycle 40mph anywhere, but that's me, glad YOU had a good time!!

One year at The Dragon, while riding a Nighthawk 700s, I got my ass handed to me by a kid on a 125cc scooter. I mean really - he ripped my eyes out of the socket and **** in the hole. At the store, I bought him a Coke and we shot the bull a little. Good times.
