I keep two sets permanently crossed over the back seat. I don't carry a pillion much at all, but you can sit on them for a while without much problem if you need to. But for all those odd large-sized pickups you do (case of beer, bake-at-home pizza, box of Depends) nothing works like Rok Straps. Great product. If you missed out on Alex's offer, think about ordering a set from him at the regular price!
