Jestal,

You've bubbled your way to the top of the oil knowledge barrel (as well as most other internal combustion related topics). An appropriate title might be "Lord of the Lube"....

Anyway, perhaps you or someone can answer the question: whats the difference between these two oils shown. One on the right, I noticed, is 'advanced soot control'. Besides the benefit of preventing my FJR from belching out soot as I make my way down the road, am I likely to notice any other side effect?

Truthfully, I just want to verify if there is any additive in 'soot control' oil that could potentially adversely affect a motocycle engine. I can't imagine so but just in case I wanted to consult the expert.

Thanks,

Russ

Actually, they are both "advanced soot control" oils as they are both designed for diesel engines, which produce lots of soot. Don't get hung up on the "advanced soot control" as its just a marketing tag line.

Both are excellent oils. The one on the right is a synthetic. That's the difference. As well as the obvious difference in viscosity spread.

Thing is, the one on the right is NOT a true synthetic, but apparently is refined to such a high level that it pretty much matches a typical synthetic oil's properties.

Again, both are good oils. Myself, I had been using the 5W-40 synthetic version, but recently changed to the 15W-40 conventional version.

Why? The 15W-40 is still a damn good oil, its cheaper, and Jestal has convinced me that there is no practical benefit to putting synthetic oil in my FJR.

Cripes. Here we go again. Another dreaded oil thead.

For cryin out loud! Ignore my post above. I thought you were comparing the conventional and synthetic versions of the Rotella T. Now I see its the same oil with just different packaging.

Going back under my rock now.

They are the exact same product....

Shell went to a new packaging layout...

all my Shell products went to a newer "COOLER" look.... :haha: (right)

:cownoy:

I bought Rotella last March and it was the same as the jug on the right.

So which is the new design?

Yep, same product, just different packaging; also I noticed a price increase at the Walmart as well. The new price is just proud of $14 dollars/gallon. I guess the refining shortage is affecting engine oil as well.

Right package is the new one. Same stuff inside, more or less. Oil is a lot like Count Chocula, slight formula changes=NEW!!!IMPROVED!!!NOW WITH MORE SLIPPERIER SHIT AND STUFF!!!!

Wish I could buy them. But, they don't have LIGHTNING BOLTS on the packaging. I heard the BOLTS make all the difference. :D

NEW!!!IMPROVED!!!NOW WITH MORE SLIPPERIER SHIT AND STUFF!!!!

:yahoo:

Oh yeah.... I forgot about the lightning bolts.... I love those things....

Where did you say you're getting that oil....?

Not sure but the newer packaging RTS on the right might have a more up-to-date diesel classification (CI+ maybe?) that is now out. Not sure about what else...

John.
