Self-Help Book Concept

I have a killer idea for a self-help book targeted to all my fellow discontented Baby Boomers seeking greater meaning in their lives now that they are at the apogee of their careers and the kids are moving out of the house.

Anyone have a connection in the publishing biz you could put me in touch with to share the concept synopsis?

If you decide to go the self publishing way, my recent experience with publishing using Lulu.com has been mostly positive. Some folks have some problems getting through the order process there but maybe only 10 or so out of 1000. Production is really easy as long as you can create a pdf to upload. As far as concept review, I don't know if they can help but maybe.

Thanks, Fred. That's good to know. Not sure I want to embark on the self-publishing route; feeling a little more traditional at this point. But who knows....

Self Publish. The main publishing houses are scrambling to keep up with the sea-change that Kindle brought to the business. The biggest success stories are those who self-publish (independents) and go digital. Lower, per-book sale price, but higher take home per sale for the authors.

Odd though. I'm sort of at the end of the Baby Boomers, yet my kids are in their 30's now and moved out (starting their own families) some time ago.

Thanks for the tip, B. I think you are probably right about self-publish. You encourage me to take this option more seriously.

Boomers fall within a 20-year range, '47 to '64, so we have a broad diversity of where we are with regard to our kids. I still have one in college, one just graduated, and one out three years. (Now, if only the cats would move on to that big sandbox in the sky we could be really free....).

I have a BBQ set-up right off the back of the house that can roast a half steer. :butcher:

Roasting Poco, my 27 year old arabian/quarter horse mix however, would cause me some pause. :bad:

Have roasted goats, pigs, lambs, even pottery on occasion, but never a horse! :trinibob:

Do you have any idea how much bacteria is generated by a decaying horse buried in your yard? My county only allows one horse burial per 5 acres of land.

there ya go then. the range has been expanded over what i had heard. post wwII and korean conflict conceptions being what i had heard. coined from the post-ww2 baby boom. Wiki includes the '64 too. i'd just not looked it up (in a long time?).

i'm simply glad you didn't bring up the whole GenX/Y thing. talk about vague definitions.

I just read an article about Amazon.com enabling the writer to eliminate the publisher and agent and deal directly with the writer. The writer and Amazon become partners. The publishers are scared silly, they see what Amazon has done to the book stores. Might be worth looking into. How you look into it, some more research in the internet should work. Good Luck

Publishers, like music companies, are scared silly because they are starting to lose their overlord powers to choose what the public can access. It's a sea-change not unlike the printing press was to hand-transcribed tomes. Writers can get the products out to readers with only the transport layer taking a cut of the sale price. That leaves the writer and reader as the ones determining what is "good" and what isn't via sales numbers.

Publishers have banded together to price fix e-books (often at prices higher than their paper counterparts) in what is commonly known as the "Agency Model". It's an insane reactionary effort that's doomed to fail as readers resist and shop for alternatives.

I just read the linked article. Funny that we're both making the same point.
