Hmmmmm.... Let's see. First of all, you'd have the time of your life if you took a little tour on two wheels in South America. It's not a Europe thing. Second, he wasn't begging for money. He was asking for help in a particular situation. No one was paying for his adventure. He just needed some gas money to get the hell out of Columbia at the time. Third, irresponsible, shameless and begging wasn't even in the equation. He was in trouble. Have you even gone to his website and looked at what he went there to do? You should. He's doing something that many of us would love to do but can't. I'm sure it's not your cup of tea but, it's his. You don't have to agree with it. Just like, we don't have to agree with you. And finally, why in hell did the presidents name have to come into the equation? You could have left that out and it might have been a reasonable topic to debate. But, you injected it. So, you got what you got. Be a big boy and deal with it.
Have a nice day. :)

Hmmm. Well. If I'm going to be called out on this for my opinion on this matter, I'd just like to say I'd like to quit my job too, ship my bike to Europe, and ride around for a couple of months ( or a year or two) and have someone else pay for it. Please message me for the donation address. Just sayin.
It's a far cry from being down and out and needing a hand up to this guy who is being irresponsible, and shamelessly begging for money so he can continue his idiousy. Noooooow you can lay me out for my opinions.

Flash
Sometimes trying to clarify a poorly thought out statement is an ill concieved notion. Maybe just letting the original piece lay there and speak for itself would be enough.

I am so confused and disoriented by what I am about to type here, I think this is unprecedented in the history of the forum.

Both Majicmaker and Bustanut have graced us with some wonderfully eloquent words of wisdom. Thank you both for sharing.

While my opinions differ, I truly respect you guys and urge all parties to use restraint and show respect. This is one of the few threads that put me at odds with some of my most favorite members and I refuse to insult or antagonize my friends.

Oh for fuks sakes!!! Some of you people sicken me with your cynicism.

If you didn't donate or don't want to, fine......... Stop with the negative **** tossing, ya sound like a bunch of conspiracy theorists.

Tony has proven he's been sincere to the vast majority who've contributed. So what if it isn't here, this isn't the only place on the web people communicate.

I've gave and taken from some really great people on this forum.

Nobody forced me or them to help out.

Hope the hell you naysayers never need a favor.
DAMN STRAIGHT Bust!

I gave (he didn't beg)

i will again... to the right person at the right time.

i have received (i have never begged, but am always grateful)

i will again... the grace (look it up) and generosity of others is amazing

it makes the world go round...

Yeah, things like this are conflicting.

The conservative pragmatist in each of us says that anyone willing to solicit publicly for help is a vagrant, a beggar, not worthy of the handout he seeks. After all, why shouldn't he just work to earn the money he needs just like all the rest of us. I certainly had these emotions.

OTOH, charity, and charitable giving is a very personal thing, not always based just on the needs of the recipient. It probably has as much to do with the giver's need to give as it does the receiver's needs.

Historically artists and performers have been targets of "giving" as endowments to that art. People often give to an entity because they like what they see being done and want that to continue. It was that kind of a situation for me.

It is interesting how important it is for some folks to loudly justify themselves if they, themselves, did not feel compelled to contribute. I guess quietly keeping your money in your pocket is not an option? Why is there a need to publicly decry the OP and everyone who chose to support his journey? Are you trying to protect the rest of us softies from foolishly wasting our hard earned money? Or, perhaps, some introspection is in order?

Damn, Fred. With your permission, I might put this on my Signature below. :)

This is a thread like any other where people give their opinions.

I gave mine as to why I wouldn't donate, and then gave examples of who I DO donate to.

I didn't say people who gave to Tony were WRONG or chastise them for giving.

So lighten up Francis!

BTW....He didn't ask for "a favor", he posted his website asking people to donate as much as they could.

He didn't say "hey can you guys send me $100.00 so I can get out of this country"?

I'm sure he was looking for hundreds of bucks to roll in so "other" people can pay for his vacation, that's some "favor".

Now Fred Honey, I just can't let that one go.

First, this is a polarizing subject and the opinions either way are going to be strong. Why should the "Non Givers" not have the right to express their opinion? Did you give your money quietly? Or, did you post your intention to do so and then post again defending your decision and actions? Are you perhaps a bit defensive because you are not convinced you made the right decision? As you say, perhaps some introspection is in order.

Fred, it is rare that you and I are on opposite sides of a discussion. I usually follow you faithfully, I always feel smarter when you and I are in agreement. Therefore I will not argue with you, we all made what we thought was The Right Decision. Once again, I urge all parties to respect those decisions while respectfully voicing their own opinions. Surely we can express our thoughts without insulting either side?

Yabbut... I post about literally everything, so I'm no accurate gauge. I'd tell you how many sheet of TP it took for today's Morning Glory, if anyone would actually read about it.

And you really don't want to agree with me all the time. Hell, I don't even agree with me all the time. ;)

BTW, on the left coast we refer to that as a Constitutional!

I won't ask for money...yet, but I noticed that "likes" are being handed out prolifically in this thread. So, I'm a 60 year old guy who is down on my likes this week and could use a few. You know how hard it is to get liked when you're an old motorcycle rider? I even moved from the left coast, and still couldn't get liked. Maybe if I change my forum name?

Anyway, has this thread run its course yet? In case there is any doubt, here is a fat lady to sing for you.

Yep! It's run it's course alright. This Red Herring about Tony traveling the world on an all expenses pay'd vacation has been beat to death. That's not true but, By Golly! The facts aren't going to change any of their minds. I guess people just need something to ***** about. Why not this one, Right? :)

Don, the resemblance is uncanny! I haven't been so disgusted since I gave up trying to make you skinny in a busted photoshop attempt.

Tom,

I think that you should probably just change your forum name to "PleaseLikeMe". You're welcome.

A tangent to the tangent...

What happens when you have the most likes? Do you get some sort of a prize? An all expenses paid trip to take a tour of the forum server farm?

If there are enough tangents to a tangent in a thread doesn't it come around back to the topic?

Maybe not since threads are seldom only 2 dimensional.

Fred you have an even 800 likes. I'm tempted to like that just to knock you off the even number.

Good question, what is a Forum Oracle X 8. An octo-oracle?
