As happy as I am with my new bike so far, I wish my FJR would have been fixed - the FJR is an EXCELLENT bike. I was planning on keeping it until it couldn't be ridden any more (and based on the forum's gen one elders, I should have been able to go for years (my FJR only had 42,300 miles on her))!

As others have pointed out, my mistake was getting an AE instead of an A!

Just razzin' you man. I'm sure you'll love the K bike. I owned one in the distant past ('86 K100RT) and would like to find another soon to add to the stable.

I lust for a K1200RS in that snazzy yellow checkerboard paint scheme. :dribble:

Yep - at least the list is SHORT(er):

1) GPS - not sure which one I am going to get this time as I was hoping for MP3 & XM but in all honesty, MP3 is more important!

2) New windshield.

3) Sliders

4) PIAA lights (just need to get mounting bracket)

5) New seat - while the stock seat on the BMW is better than the FJR's, it still AIN'T a long distance seat!

I am sure there will be other things to add!

BTW, the 1200RS is one nice bike .... it was also on my short list (along with the 1200RT).

1. Stay away from the Zumo 660 (or the BMW variant of it) for now. It sucks in terms of displayed map detail and has altogether too many bugs. Hopefully the Zumo 550 hasn't yet been been hobbled the way the 660 is . . .

4. IMO PIAA is just overpriced smoke and mirrors.

Consider spending money for proper lighting rather than for a Chinese name brand as things stand. Hella Micro DE Xenon, HID driving lights are what I use as do many of the BMW GS users - Warchild has a set on his Suzuki. However he has recently alluded to the pending availability of a competitive Chinese product of some sort, but it's been a while since I've seen anything from him on that score.

I will NOT be getting the Garmin 660!

I already own the PIAA lights ... they actually have worked very well for me for what I use them for (lighting up the sides of the FM (Farm to Market) roads when I ride home at night (too many critters)!

It seems Yamaha customer service lacks in other areas too. Besides my FJR I ride a Grizzly 700 ATV in the great outdoors, so I am a member of the Grizzly Central forum. Check out this guy's problems with his Grizzly. The story is much the same as Shanes. Grizzly Link Too bad BMW doesn't make ATVs. :blink:

Well, we (family) are in Berlin Germany! Cassie (daughter) is a sleep and Sandi/I are wide awake and I am actually being able to work via remote desktop over the Internet!

When I get back, I will be adding many, many MILES / SMILES on my new bike!

Shane, I don't know if you are still reachable from this forum, but I am now living the FJR AE hell, I am coming up on a year since my SH 26 code came up, bike was in and out of shop here in Reno, Nv. all last fall and in November I spent over $1800 replacing the clutch actuator assembly etc., I am still having problems.

I am also now at the point where I may just try to trade it in on a new FJR. I cannot sell this on the private market in good conscience. I would just be selling some other guy my headaches and I just can't do that to another rider.

There are many more details to my story, and I just don't feel like putting them all here as it just depresses me more over this ongoing issue. I too loved this bike when it was running right. I have been a loyal Yamaha customer since I was a teenager and will be 55 in July. It is very disappointing to see that they have not owned up to what I think has become somewhat of a Lemon Law issue. I will see what they give me for a trade and if it's not enough then sadly I most likely will never buy a Yamaha again, even though I was really planning on another FJR down the road because I do love the bike.

To all you guys looking at used AE models, I would recommend staying away from them unless you get it dirt cheap. Bike was awesome when working right but I, like Shane, cannot take the anguish and stress any longer.

Sad to see Yamaha has failed me for the first time in all these years.

In respect to the guys at the local Yamaha dealer, they have tried really hard to solve my problem, including bringing in a Yamaha tech specialist from California, etc.

I am actually writing this before going to see my guy at the dealer to see what he might suggest, and also to see what they can do for me on that new 2013 FJR they have sitting on the showroom floor.

If anyone responds to my post I will be happy to update them with my situation.

Having gone through a intermittent Shift-16 problem I can relate to your frustration. It took approximately 6 months to resolve and the FSM lead me down paths which offered no positive results. The dealer and mother Yamaha where also no real help as they kept referring to the FSM for fixes. I ending up resolving the issue myself based on observations of the shift motor and other tests and did not spend very much money at the dealer. I documented the issue on this form under "shift-16 Problem - Resolved"

By giving a chorological time line of the events and attempted fixes, it may help someone else down the line valuable information on what to do or not to do.

Just my 2 cents.
