...how about a round or two of Kumbayah:
:trinibob:
No? Not a Kumbayah fan, eh? OK, how about, If I Had A Hammer? ;)
IF I HAD A HAMMER (The Hammer Song)

words and music by Lee Hays and Pete Seeger

If I had a hammer

I'd hammer in the morning

I'd hammer in the evening

All over this land

I'd hammer out danger

I'd hammer out a warning

I'd hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters

All over this land

If I had a bell

I'd ring it in the morning

I'd ring it in the evening

All over this land

I'd ring out danger

I'd ring out a warning

I'd ring out love between my brothers and my sisters

All over this land

If I had a song

I'd sing it in the morning

I'd sing it in the evening

All over this land

I'd sing out danger

I'd sing out a warning

I'd sing out love between my brothers and my sisters

All over this land

Well I've got a hammer

And I've got a bell

And I've got a song to sing

All over this land

It's the hammer of justice

It's the bell of freedom

It's the song about love between my brothers and my sisters

All over this land

From the Department of Little Known Facts or better put, the Who Gives A **** Files:

Kum ba yah is of African origins. IIRC, African slaves from the Ivory Coast spoke a dialect called Gulla or Golah and brought with them a tribal chant to their god(s). Roughly translated Kum Ba Yah means, Here he comes, or Please come or He is here - I really can't remember exactly. I don't recall whether the melody came from these people or just the Kum Ba Yah part. The best guess scenario was that the slaves incorporated the African chants and songs into the new Christian hymns they were being taught. I guess they had to give whitie's tunes some soul.

Anyway, weed was really good back in the day, the library was across the street and me and my hippy buds were often bored and sought to enlighten ourselves with such nonsense.

Sffffffffffftt, cough, hit? :drag:

According to a googled source, Kum ba yah means “Come by here.” Makes sense in that context.

Kum ba yah, my Lord, kum ba yah!

Kum ba yah, my Lord, kum ba yah!

Kum ba yah, my Lord, kum ba yah!

O Lord, kum ba yah!

Someone’s laughing, Lord, kum ba yah!

Someone’s laughing, Lord, kum ba yah!

Someone’s laughing, Lord, kum ba yah!

O Lord, kum ba yah!

Someone’s crying, Lord, kum ba yah!

Someone’s crying, Lord, kum ba yah!

Someone’s crying, Lord, kum ba yah!

O Lord, kum ba yah!

Someone’s praying, Lord, kum ba yah!

Someone’s praying, Lord, kum ba yah!

Someone’s praying, Lord, kum ba yah!

O Lord, kum ba yah!

Someone’s singing, Lord, kum ba yah!

Someone’s singing, Lord, kum ba yah!

Someone’s singing, Lord, kum ba yah!

O Lord, kum ba yah!

Kum ba yah, my Lord, kum ba yah!

Kum ba yah, my Lord, kum ba yah!

Kum ba yah, my Lord, kum ba yah!

O Lord, kum ba yah!

I surrender. :agree:

I make a smart ***, inane, remark and I get an education. Worse still I have had a hand in causing this thread to go completly into outer space. :alien:

And get longer. <_<

At least, in this case, off topic is good.

Maybe now we can let this one fade away.

:cownoy:

TWN, I had to go to the library while my hippy friends weren't looking and according to the gov the weed is even better today.

Hmmmm tweezers,,,Here, let me sterilize 'em.

Sffffffffffftt B)

Heh-Heh!

And the hip-hop guys thought they invented something! Other than abusing a Technics turntable (The Wheel of Steel) and an old LP, they really had nothing new.

The field "hollers", "talking blues" ("Walking down in Birmingham, way down south in Dixieland...."--oops--Phil Ochs days...), and other forms of rhythmic chanting (High School choruses are probably STILL performing "Geographic Fugue") and poetry spoken to music go back far before even EARLY hip-hop (later rap) began...Some come out of the slave traditions reaching back to Africa, others go back to hill-billy days. Still others go back to Irish and Turkish epic poetry--sing-song stories that went on for hours.

Probablyl the OLDEST known "rap" is Homer's Illiad--but they couldn't do a "scratch" with it!

(that'll teach YOU to be a smart-***! :haha: )
