My friend from the UK, Sally, is coming for another visit and we are planning a week long moto ride (Oct. 16-24 approximately). Going to keep it close to home but hit some roads that neither of us has done before which pointed us in the direction of SoCal. Tentative route here. Of course, all of this is weather dependent as we get closer but you get the general idea.

Any suggestions on alternate routes, places to stay, things to see/do (i.e. The Rock Store), etc.? Sally didn't specify much other than she wants to stay at the Madonna Inn one night and visit Benton Hot Springs. Route stops there as I think I hit my maximum waypoint limit on Google maps but plan is to come back over Tioga Pass (yes, I know there are recent variables to that as well!).

Thanks much!!

P.S. Company welcome along the way! B)

you know you welcome here overnight, will put the trailer in the driveway for privacy, with food and a spa.hit me up,we could have some fjrers over to bbq

From Three Rivers to the Madonna Inn, a good alternate route would be SR-198 (a great motorcycling road) over to US-101, then Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd. to PCH.

SR-41 south of 46 is nice enough, but isn't in the same league as SR-198. And there's something special about coming over the hill on N-F Rd. to spot the Pacific down below -- plus you then get to ride a nice section of PCH along the Central Coast.

Hole Lee Cow, I love your "close to home rides" .
Weather channel will be your friend in mid October. What day will you be in Benton?
Right now, Oct. 23/24. Will know for sure as we get closer. :D

I've ridden 198 and NF roads many times as well as the PCH and I agree about the views... I believe Sally has ridden them as well but will check with her. Not sure she's ever ridden 229/Rossi's Driveway which is why I routed it the way I did... folks tend to like to ride that one more than once so allowed time for a couple of runs... ;)

If you have the time, Palomar has some great roads, and one of the best places for pie is the Julian Pie Company in Santa Ysabel...

I live in Pismo and go by the Madona inn every day on my commute. I would recommend taking See canyon to Perfumo canyon to get from San Luis Bay drive to Los Osos Valley rd. if you go west, take Los Osos Valley rd ant take Turri rd to angle north and get around Los Osos on the way to morro Bay. If going up the coast on hywy 1, detour east onto Old Creek rd then to Satna Rosa Creek(go straight at the stop sign crossing 46) to Cambria. If you continue up the coast, past Ragged point, take another detour up Nacimiento Ferguson rd.. I was at the sealion haul out area 3 weeks ago, it is empty (only 1) this time of year.

NOTE: All these roads except Old Creek and Turri have breath taking views however, they are steep (in spots) narrow without center lane markings and have very steep sections.

HYWY 58 from Santa Margarita to Taft is great for twisty's but then you are not on the coast anymore either.

PM me as your time gets closer, maybe we can ride together a little.

If you are planning on going south, You could take 166 to Tepesquet rd to Foxen canyon to southish Santa Maria and swing by Jalama Bay.

Edit: I just saw your route, well done. Enjoy your ride

While you are down south here, I would take a detour to Little Tujunga, Bouquet Canyon (beautiful scenery, nice road), Angeles Forrest, Upper Big Tujunga (9 mile, very smooth high speed sweepers), to the 2 to Wrightwood. You will talk about those roads for months IMO.

When you are near PORTERVILLE you can take the 190 up into the Southern Sierras, FANTASTIC road like the Swiss Alps and brings you down to the KERN RIVER and through Kernville.

This takes you to the 178 and you can take the 178 either to the 395 or the other way to the 99 in Bakersfield.

Awesome suggestions and added to that day's route... thank you! B)

Route for Saturday, Oct. 19, is here. Question: Google maps won't let me route going up Tuna Canyon from the PCH... only going down and off of S. Topanga Canyon. Am I missing something? Do these roads not all connect? Is Tuna Canyon unpaved or something? We will be staying in Hollywood that night because Sally's never been there... so a short fun jaunt around the canyons, including a stop at The Rock Store (do they have breakfast there?) and then off to Hollyweird to do the tourista thing.

Sunday, Oct. 20, is looking something like this.

Any suggestions on avoiding traffic, etc.? Anyone want to join in the fun either day? B)

It actually snowed up in the higher elevations, but I think you will be fine in Wrightwood. Might want to check first.
