Sometimes a Ticker doesn't Tick

I guess I am glad this thread is here to let me know that you can have valve guide wear without hearing the valves clattering around. Unless it is just because NightShine is deaf? :blink:

 
This is tremendous stuff; talk about sticking to the topic, I was certain that somewhere along the line Ivan was going to be asked if he used a vacuum pump to drain the oil; and how did he regard cleaning the pistons with the inverse gas fill-up through the exhaust pipes as a customer friendly option?

 
Most interesting thread since I've got a Gen I with 38k miles. Never had an audible or noticeable problem, but that's a "seat of the pants" disgnosis which I'll stick with until something obvious manifests itself. :rolleyes:

Did the question on whether Chevron Techron is an effective (if not partial) substitute for Ring Free ever get answered?

Not directly, but Zac has implied that it is effective in my conversation with him. After my ticker was fixed at Roseville Yamaha, having known what he had found in his bike, I asked him what the inside of my engine looked like. Zac told me that my engine was pretty well free of carbon deposits (I use Chevron and Shell gasoline almost exclusively), while his FJR (OrangevaleFJR's/Andrew's old bike) was loaded with the nasty carbon deposits.

We were discussing our late mutual friend's penchant for buying only the cheapest gas, and that being the likely difference between what he found on his own (Andrew's old FJR) pistons and my clean ones. So the upshot of that conversation was that the additive packages in Chevron (which has Techron in it) and Shell gas is effective, while what Andrew had been using (very little in additive packages in his choice of gasoline) was not.

+1, Gunny! A Very Happy New Year 2011 to the Warchild Family, it was great hearing from you again Dale! Rich, it is very interesting what Zac said about Andrew's bike having carbon deposits. Like Orangevale, I also use the cheapest gas I can find in my 2003 FJR (copper wire was invented by two Irishmen fighting over a penny!); with 50K on my Miss Lucy Liu I better switch over to Chevron and Shell. Is NightShine really deaf? Inquiring minds want to know! I'll bet Ivan LOVES car tires on his bikes!

+1, Gunny! Good Call, Scope! That's us, we're some stick to the topic SOB's around here! RadioHowie, Old Michael, rushes, TriggerT, WheatonFJR, Bustanut joker, LagerHead, Bluesy and Papa Chuy haven't yet met the FJR Forum thread that we can't twist up! For what it's worth, 50K on my '03 and NO ticking! Deaf as a board!

Getting this thread back on point after hurricane Ivan:

OK, I see that now. Not sure how I missed that. So, my next question would be, how accurate is that (in two ways):

Is 20-30% accurate? Was leak-down really 20-30% down from prior readings on that engine or was the leakdown itself 20-30%?

From wikipedia:

Leakage is given in wholly arbitrary percentages but these "percentages" do not relate to any actual quantity or real dimension. The meaning of the readings is only relative to other tests done with the same design of tester. Leak-down readings of up to 20% are usually acceptable while greater than that requires a repair. Racing engines would be in the 1-10% range for top performance.
 
The second question is: Was it really "across the board" meaning all 4 cylinders were equally bad?

My understanding is that valve guide wear that results in audible tickers is usually concentrated in the left most (#1) cylinder due to the head design. Which gets us back to the unanswered question as to whether the increased leakdown rate (compression loss) was due to the non-ticking (but oil leaking) valve guides or something else, like gunked up rings. The answers to these questions would seem to be of interest to other higher mileage 1st gen owners who haven't had the tick fixed.

WOW! My question got answered (sort of). I thought No One was talking with me here anymore, so I've been spending time over at the V-Strom International Board. :unsure:
