Usually, we are allowed some freedom in discussions that pertain to a limited scope, like this one, i.e., the input from officers about enforcing or breaking the speed laws. Once you bring other issues into the discussion it will be forcefully ended by the admins.

I only put that in to show how laws evolve from their intent not to make it political. IE speeding to catch people not wearing there seat belt.

And for a total hijack of the subject, how come people say "traveling at a high rate of speed"? Isn't that acceleration?

Son of a beech, I was tooling up the left lane this morning and noticed a suspicious looking car about a 1/2 mile ahead and backed off......yep, NJ State policeman. :yahoo:

I've learned to trust that "something just ain't right" feeling.

Thank you. Thank you very much.
Elvis, is that you? I thought you left the building!?!

Anyway, back in the '80's when I was a younger pup, I was under the mistaken impression that a speeding LEO was an open invitation to tag along, (safely, at a distance), so for about 25 miles (heading south out of St. Louis on I-55) I followed a cop doing about 90 in a 55. Life was good until he slowed and moved over two lanes. Not paying close attention, I coasted by him and he swung right back in behind me and lit me up. The normal Q&A session happened at the side of the road and my 'excuse' was that I had military orders to be at Keesler AFB (Biloxi, MS) by a specific time and that it was going to be very tight to make it. He asked me to prove it, so I showed him my orders. Though I was telling the truth I really didn't expect it to make any difference, but he let me go with a warning. I deserved a ticket.

A second time, going south at night on I-29 in very heavy truck traffic, I was doing 75 in a 65 and staying full time in the left lane because the trucks were packed so tight in the right lane that there wasn't room to safely get between them. At one point a car came up behind me, and I mean about 8-10 feet behind me, and just sat there. I sped up to 80, 85, 90, then 95, trying to shake him, but he stayed right there on my ***, way too close for me to even see his headlights in my mirrors. I figured it was a road rage prick or someone heading to a hospital so I watched for an opportunity to get in between two trucks and let him pass. After a few miles I saw my chance. The space was tight and I'd have to slow down wickedly fast after changing lanes to make it work, but I was determined to get out of this *******'s way. As soon as I pulled over and he passed, I could see it was a LEO. I was very relieved - partly because it wasn't a road rage prick and partly because I didn't get stopped. I only wish he had given me a few seconds of the gumballs to let me know what I was dealing with. Not sure what I could have done differently, but I doubt I would have gone to 95 in that case.

A few months ago I was traveling through South Carolina on my bike, a group of 3 state troopers in SUVs went past me, I was doing 70ish, they were doing 80. I sped up a bit and hung with them, after about 15 minutes the one in the back slowed down till we were side by side, and he gave me a dirty look and indicated to me to slow down. I backed off after that.

I called a buddy of mine, he was late and I wondered why. He was rather abrupt on the phone. There was an Indiana State Trooper outside his truck issuing him a ticket for something like 72 in a 55. "Major Bill" didn't get cut any slack, and got nailed deservedly and admittedly. He came up FROM BEHIND the trooper and hauled on the brakes to not blow passed him. Didn't much matter. The Major explained not only do Indiana troopers have forward and rearward radar, they track multiple targets simultaneously.

Pretty cool that there's "F-18" sort of technology in those cruisers. Makes it kinda tough on us spirited riders, though...
