Don't expect it to get any better. Our eight year old writes stories in school all of the time, but their spelling is NOT checked. Drives me nuts!

I think we are giving the poor child a complex: she brings home a story she has a perfect score on, and the wife and I rip the spelling to shreds.

The Firefox browser has built-in spell checking.
That's what I use, but if you put in the wrong word and spell it right, it won't catch it. I struggle to accept poor written communication, but acceptance is the key to serenity.

Ironic that the OP missed critical punctuation and capitalization. I guess (s)he's just worried about spelling, but does pretty good for it being a second language.

I notice bad spelling quite frequently on this forum. Is it because the poster is in a hurry or is it for lack of knowing.
Jus wonderin... :yahoo:

my mother tongue/native language is German and so I am always surprised when I see all those spelling errors
Apathy.

Yeah, I have an unfortunate problem in this regard, because if a word is misspelled, then when I look at the page it INSTANTLY jumps out at me as if it's in red all-caps. As far as I know, I'm the only person with this "issue" that I know of. I just grit my teeth and try to ignore it.

Anyway, the American school system is considered a babysitting service, not an educational service, if the comments of the "parents" I talk to are any indication. Plus it's badly underfunded. Plus if teachers even think about attempting to discipline a student that's disrupting the class, then all hell breaks loose on her, and "my sweet Johnny-boy NEVER misbehaves! why, he's a little angel!". So you end up with lil' ******** screaming and yelling and throwing things, and the rest of the class is laughing at him instead of listening, and the teacher can't do anything about it. We don't even teach a foreign language any more, not even Spanish, at least here in Florida.

I could really break out into a rant about this, but as A) I'm not having kids and B) the idiots coming out of school are not as competitive for my job, I don't care any more.

Noticed any English slipping into tagliche Deutsche? The whole way we communicate is changing. Want to see spelling that will stop you in your tracks, look over a teenager's shoulder as he/she IM's a friend. I'm no longer Dad or a parent, I'm a "rnt"

Now, that's a different issue, as those ****** little phone keyboards SUCK for text, and they're in a hurry, but yeah, that does teach them to get sloppy. However, if anyone speaks "TXT" on most forums I frequent, they get laughed at pretty hard.

On the flip side, the university I work for tried to communicate with some high school students using texting speak. That did not go over well at all, good for the kids! :clapping:

BTW, IMHO, WFO, WTF, ...

Here in Northern Mexico we speak alot of spanglish...two languages grammatically abused...now get down from the car and sit in this shair and chutupp ! Also great to be blond and blue-eyed and speak spanish well...a little curve ball now and again. I'm lucky my Mom is a reader and passed this on to me...too bad neither of us can type ! Onward through the fog then lads !

I have tried to emphasize to my 19 year old that the ability to communicate is the most important thing she will learn in school. It doesn't matter how smart you are if you cannot convey it to another person. Then she gives me the deer in the headlight look and continues texting to her friends. Oh, well, someday they are going to learn they're the ones that will have to take over this world.
