Thanx for the well thought out responses. Hopefully in time more will follow and some progress can be made on this issue.

When I was just a wee pup...smoking was cool. Now smoking is not cool! Perhaps eventually change in thought/perception can happen on this bad habit as well.

I really do not know why everyone insisted on making this discussion about legal liability. "Responsibility" does not always mean a legal or monetary obligation.

My point from the very beginning was that legalities were not my concern here. My concern was (and still is) that it is usually my friends, sometimes my own son, that are following me, and so I ride more responsibly than I might if nobody was following me. That's not to say that I always wick it up when I am alone, just that I seldom if ever do if I'm leading someone else.

Why is that so hard to comprehend? How is that eroding the freedom of other motorcyclists?

It is not hard to comprehend and I understand and agree with you completely.

It is my take and concern on the possible legal responsibility aspect. I just wish I could determine if the 'story' I heard regarding the gopro footage being evidence to suggest that a ride leader was at fault and responsible for a rider behind him crashing. If it is true then perhaps we as a group should do 'something' to stop that thinking. Not sure what that would be??? Even if it is not true, maybe we should do something before it becomes true.

Hell, I don't know. All I know is that it is to damn hot out to ride.

Bad things happen on group rides. I rarely do them anymore, and more rarely do I lead. While leading rides I have had following riders;

1. Get t-boned at a stop sign intersection.

2. Not make a turn on a road and get a helicopter ride.

3. Blown rear tire with lockup and crash of the rider and pillon.

4. Rider at back lost track of group and hit a deer trying to catch up.

5. Rider hit me from behind when I slowed for a right turn.

That's more than I can take regardless of fault, and it is just a small sample of what goes on in group rides. I haven't done a group ride since 2012, although I've ridden with 2-3 others on a "meet you at the next turn" basis. This **** will haunt you.

Well made points about those "in the right" prevailing eventually. My main issue is the cost to get to "not guilty". This stuff ain't cheap so better to avoid it in the first place.

A friend of mine had an accident and his passenger died (they had just started dating). The woman's family sued him in civil court and he had to pay damages. I don't know how much but he did have to pay. :2cents
