I gotta go see me a mile race too. Never been. Just local yokel stuff.

Oh, and what do Warchild and King Kennie have in common? :rofl:

Flat-track fan? Oh yea. In my youth I was invited to an 'outlaw' flat-track race (somewhere in MD?) one weekend.
Could that have been the Barbara Fritchie Classic

https://www.barbarafritchieclassic.com/

held in Frederick every July 4? One of the oldest half mile races in the country. I remember watching Bart Markel race there in '68 and '69. IIRC, it wasn't a points race, so most of the big names skipped it, but Bart liked the track (so I was told), so he would borrow a ride, race there, then immediately hop a flight to California to race San Jose. It was amazing to watch him square off the turns at the outside fence and get through faster than the ones in the groove. As I remember, his motto was: "Nice guys finish last".

Shock and amazement "September 11 Canterbury Park (Minneapolis, Minnesota) Mile"

This is a local horse racing track. they held one flat track race there years ago. It never came back, the locals didn't like the noise <eye roll> How can you not like the sound of an XR750 at full song on the mile.

We'll have to see if this really happens, I've got my doubts but I hope I'm wrong.

Rick, Yavapai Downs is also a horse racing track. Old Timers here in Arizona had mentioned that in the early Fifties through Seventies there used to be motorcycle racing there, but I've not seen it in my years of living here. This is going to be so cool!

I believe that they did this at Emerald Downs in Auburn (maybe the old Longacers track) years back. I can't remember the young ladies name but she got maimed badly as the dirt that horse's run in isn't what a XR750 should be racing in, they didn't adequately protect the riders from the rails that they use for Horse racing. I hope they do better than what they did up here for your horse tracks. Or I hope the riders walk.

I rememmber seeing him at the Castle Rock TT's in the mid 70's, what fun that was! I hated it when Mount Saint Helens blew it ruined the tract, no more Nationals.
Castle Rock and Knoxville Iowa were just added to the GRAND NATIONAL Schedule as of today.Not sure of Castlerock date as I haven't looked at updated schedule. Knoxville IA is Sept 18th. Awesome 90 miles from home!!!!

Wow, great video of Kenny Roberts on the Two cycle 750-4, amazing

and did anybody notice one of the spectators was Kel Cruthers? the last

flatracker to to do the inverted cross up, on purpose.. everybody else did

it on accident just before the altitude gained in a highside.

I was in the pits that night at Indy & it was incredible to witness King Kenny hammering the throttle on the thing the way he did, the guy just isn’t right! :wacko:

Another really cool thing that happened that night was sticking around after the racing was over & the stands were empty & getting to see Ben Bostrom take a couple laps on the TZ. We got to talk to Ben the next day at the speedway & to hear him describe riding the thing was amazing.

Looking forward to Indy 2010.

Here are a few more shots from the Indy Mile;

Not a very good photo but this is Ben sideways in the middle of the front stretch at 100mph+. The TZ is not for the faint of heart.

Truer words have never been spoken, especially after KR said "I've haven't ridden a bike in a year" and he goes out an wacks the throttle and rides the cushion like it was just yesterday he was racing on the mile.

In the pic below I see a small camera, looks like one of those Hero Pro vid cameras down on the right fork tube. I wonder were the video from that is??

Soooooooo, what did he say!?

I guess it wasn’t so much the words but the excitement in his voice, thrill of a lifetime kind of thing.

He said it was jetted so rich that it would barley run under 10,000rpm & then it was either wide open or completely off.

He said there was no way that Kenny could have ever won a race on that bike, said there was absolutely zero traction , that it would spin the tire all the way down the straight-aways if you let it.

He said it was by far his most thrilling experience of the year.

Here is a cool shot just after the ride talking to his brother Eric & it's not hard to figure out what is being said with the hand gestures;

A writer from Motorcyclist magazine took the thing for a lap after Ben but never got it on the pipe, I’m not sure if the story has been published yet or not?
