Gee whiz, Jill, what did you guys do to upset the great "Kharma Wheel"? I'm sending good thoughts your way and offering prayers vertically.

Uhm...keep your son out of the garage. Tell him that his "little" Uncle Mike says :nono: !

While they're great guys and I'm sure you appreciate the offer...I'd be a bit suspect of the proposal by some of your "friends" in SoCal. Or is it their proposal is suspect? Oh wait, tell them you have July 27th open for them to ride your "scooters".

(about 3 yrs. ago) When approaching the front entry of a jobsite in the rain, had to duck under 2 - 2x4's that were horizontal across the porch. Then when I stood up, didn't see the third one and it buckeled me down to the ground almost blacking out. After the mri, turned out I had several herniated disk. This was THE most crucial pain in my life. The doctor gave me a prescription for meds and a good massage therapist. Somewhere online, I read where it would take 5 to 6 weeks to heal enough for the pain to subside. Everyday i would wake up only to find the pain was still there until the 1st day of the 6th week. Pain was gone and all I can say is it really sucked until then. Good luck w/ your therapy and pray you heal fast.

Wow, I wish I could say that I knew nothing of your pain, alas, I do. I had a herniated disc at L4-5 in the late 70's, (yes that dates me) and had a discectomy to resolve it. My left leg shriveled to nothing while they dithered about the treatment. Mucho pain and plenty of codeine helped. Even tried a drug called Talwin, which sent me on a very colorful hallucination. Anyway about 10 years later, another stupid lifting accident caused the small remainder of the disc to blow out and I wound up with a fusion, harvesting some bone from my left hip to the site. The doc said take it easy, but work took me to Prudhoe Bay within 3 weeks and the rough gravel roads unglued the fusion. They waited a year and did it again, this time with with bone from the right hip and some stainless wire to loop it all together. It worked perfectly. I ride dirt bikes, ski damn hard, and ride the feejer without pain.

I am not trying one up anyone here but merely now happily describing a period of much pain that got resolved very well. If anyone has not had bad disc pain, it ain't fun. Plenty of chemicals required to get anywhere near a smile.

Good luck, Jill, I will be cheering for you, the prognosis is excellent for full recovery and for many years of riding and rock and rolling.

+1 on wishing you well and sending major prayers and good wishes your way. I did the herniated disc and it took about 10 days of ice, IB, and Naproxen, while laying on the floor with my feet up on the sofa. Kind of a laying down sitting position. I think morphine doesn't do much for the pain, it just makes it so I don't care. We all respond different so glad that you seem to have found what works better (there is no best) in your case.

What I wanted to add was (1) that once I started feeling less uncomfortable (a week or so), the doc sent me to a physical therapist. The painful terrorist was worth every cent. She worked on getting things straight and then building muscle to support the area. She even said that eventually I'd slack off and suddenly have a painful reminder to keep doing the exercises and damn if she wasn't right!

(2) The other thing is that my RN wife and a consulting MD said to have surgery. Well, it's going on 5 years later and I sure am glad that I listened to the PT, original MD, and others, as I'm (knock on wood) feeling fine and have no side effects. Surgery should always be the absolute last resort.

Hi, I truly feel your pain. c5 and c6 are my nemesis. I concur with the others who have suffered as well avoid the surgery if you can. If the disk is just inflamed and bulging you have a good chance of avoiding the surgery. It does take a good amount of time to get better though. After my disks went back to less bulging my arm and behind my shoulder blade ached constantly. What helped me in the end was a shot of cortisone to the affected area to shrink all the swelling and allow the nerves to become unpinched. Then PT to get it strong to support itself. 3 days after the shot my strength came back in my arm and the pain was only there when I tilted my head in that one position. I wish you the best. The most common surgery is to fuse the two vertibre. This is very old school and there are better alternatives. Seek out micro surgeons and part disk removal/repair. Its out there and way less invasive. Oh yeah, for me vicodin mixed with Alieve was the pain fix. The Alieve seemed to supercharge the vicodin. By itself it did not work so good. Be strong, believing you will be better makes a big difference.

Sad but true. I can neither ride nor drive for a while. The nagging neck pain exploded into something more significant. I'm now in the midst of a work up for a herniated disc. Isn't that what OLD people get? I guess I answer my own question here.
Anyone have experience with this? It's all new to me, since pediatric patients don't tend to be affected by things like this.

Over the last three days, I've tried Tylenol, Naprosyn a regular muscle relaxant, the Lexus of muscle relaxants (Skelaxin), lots of Vicodin, Corona and some red wine. Last night, I was taking a handful of something or other with a glass of something else, every couple of hours (that was desperation, but not a smart move).

This morning, I sought a second opinion, not believing the doc who diagnosed a muscle strain. I was able to see a neurologist and have just had an MRI. I've also got a prescription for some pretty heavy dosing of morphine. The pain is still there after a dose, but I can actually move my arm now.

Lots of wait and see. Doc has signed me off work for a month. Does that suck or what? I have all this time free, three fantastic bikes PLUS perfect weather, but I can't ride :(

Jill
Jill,

Sherri got a herneated disk at age 32. So, you're as healthy and young as a 32 year old :)

It does suck...aren't you supposed to be dirt bike riding?

Major suckage! If the dirt bike had an odometer, it would show a pitiful ONE mile or so. I took the bike for an illegal spin in the neighborhood (it's dirt only, not a DS).

On top of that, Andy had fixed up his Warrior for me to ride too. I took that out last weekend and had a blast.

All these wonderful bikes to ride...... but at least I have loving, caring friends who will keep my bikes running for me. :)

I know Sherri has had to skip a lot of things she wanted to do...as a patient, be aggressive in pursuing treatment that makes sense to you. Research and read information on the web. There are a lot of good back/neck pain sites.

Med science has come a long way in a short time. I've had surgeries for two herniated discs on two separate occassions. The first one a few years ago wasn't too bad, I healed quickly but it did involve an overnight stay in the hospital. The last one a year ago was a piece of cake and I got to go home the same afternoon. I tried all the alternative cures too, but don't let it go too long as you may develop permanent nerve damage by putting off the inevitable. I was out mowing the yard in four days and painting the deck in a week. It's not as bad as it sounds any more. Good Luck to you.
