Hi, all.

Mrs. BikerGeek and I, along with my dad and his brother-in-law, will be making a journey to the great northeast.

Here is our current plan, at least as much as we're going to plan:

* Friday, 5/29: Leave Columbus, OH, going to Morgantown, WV, to meet up with my dad and his brother-in-law on their Harley baggers.

* Saturday, 5/30: Travel from Morgantown to York, PA. I think dad is going to slab it, I've got a route plotted taking us along Route 50 a good bit of the way.

* Sunday, 5/31: We'll pick up a couple more riders (also on their Harleys) and head for Long Island, eventually making our way to Riverhead, NY, for the night.

* Monday, 6/1: Upon advice from The Axeman, ride around Long Island playing tourists. Jordan's bridge is on the list to see, and stay the night in Riverhead again.

* Tuesday, 6/2: Depart Long Island for Points Unknown, no real plan other than Bar Harbor, and whatever else sounds good to us.

We don't need to be home until Sunday, 6/7, so we'll be lollygagging around for a few days.

Ionbeam has given me some suggestions of sights to see and roads to ride. We hope to meet up with him. If anyone else in the 'hood would like to ride along for a bit, let me know!

Ride safe,

BG

Damn Dude you've got the life...you just got back from one trip, and now your going off on another week long ride :drinks: :****: wish I could do that. Hey have a great time

Damn it's good to be a gangsta.

Luckily the company Mrs. BikerGeek and I work for has a very generous paid time off policy, and we've both been there long enough to have accrued quite a bit of time off each year. We are both very fortunate for this. Plus, my boss is a good boss - while he tends to be bad about using all his PTO, so far he's been OK with my trips hither and dither.

So far this year, we've had a week in Florida, 9 days on the road for SFO & Route 66, now another 9 1/2 days on the road for the great northeast.

I will say this: when we get home, we're not planning another trip until EOM. We've got a lot of work around the homestead to take care of.

BG,

Sounds like a great trip. For a nice place to stay in Riverhead, try the Hilton Garden Inn. It is a new building and the prices are better than most.

For route north, I'd suggest riding up through western eastern CT, central MA, and NH, then on up through the White Mountains. Once you are north of the notches, you can head east from Gorham, NH past Bangor, ME to get over to Bah-ha-bah. Driving up there via the major interstates and the Maine turnpike is faster, but no great joy.

Here's how I'd go from the New London Ferry terminal up to Concord, NH:

Then going north from Concord, you can take pretty much any route and really can't go wrong.

Fred,

I think you meant EASTERN CT...

Good stuff, Fred. Thanks! :clapping: And we already have reservations in Riverhead at (IIRC) the Best Western. That's no HGI by any means, but that's OK.

Cota -

I'm sure that Axeman recommended the ferry from Orient Point to New London. From there it is worth heading east to visit Newport, RI. OTOH. Plymouth Rock is pretty disappointing.

Boston has some interesting places to see, but make sure you don't get there just before or after a Red Sox game, the traffic will be unbelievable.

Newport is a mess in the summer too, just like Boston. Personally, I'd steer clear of either unless you really like being with a lot of other people. That was the idea of my more westerly route north. But everybody has their likes and dislikes. I just dislike cities as a whole.

I have yet to hear one good thing about driving in or through Boston. The current No Plan is to avoid Boston. Yeah, I'd like to see the city and all, but not on this trip. There is just too much else I want to see.

Besides, I'm a Yankees fan. :yahoo:

You can post up any questions on our forum that you'll see linked there. As a matter of fact there is a pretty involved thread going on right now with tips and a pretty much complete route to take down through this area.

Pinstripes aren't so welcome 'round these parts. But bikers are- so you'll be fine. Boston traffic is not the best riding experience. Stay outside the 495 belt and you'll have a much more enjoyable ride. The journey to the White Mountains is worth it- you will find some great bike roads- This time of the year the traffic will be light also.

I checked the weather- I think it will be most agreeable for riding. Enjoy! I'm jealous.

That's terrific! Looks like a lot of really good information there. Thanks! I really appreciate you sharing that!

So far, the weather is looking favorable. After all that damn rain at SFO that'll be a welcome change.

Probbly gonna rain.
There's always gotta be one. Why, Michael? Why do ya have to be 'That' guy??

Besides, old people smell funny.

Spot tracker this time?

Nope, but there will be pictures. Lots of pictures.

Oh man... and I shared my good route with you? <_<

Personally I have nothing against Maine and Rock hampshire(lying), however Vermont has the twistiest roads, less people and the best beer and gas is cheaper, women are prettier, people are taller and they never lie and are always right, except for those who are way left, and the west coast of Vermont ahs the warmest water. Proven Fact!

Too funny Johnnie. And you being completely unbiased and all... ;)

Your point is a good one. No trip to the New England is complete without venturing into the Green Mountain state. Maybe he can hit VT on his way back home?

Johnnie beat me to it, but if you do get the chance Vermont has some good roads. RT 17 and Smugglers Notch are 2 of the best right off the top of my head. Let me know if you need more help with VT route planning. Right Fred :winksmiley:

hmmm. . . maybe ride some / all of rt 100 in Vermont, my favorite in the whole state (have to include some of the country roads off 100). He can then come down through western mass (Berkshires) into western CT & ride some nice roads on & off rt 7 (341, 45 etc). If he ends up in CT on Sunday, a stop at Marcus Dairy in Danbury would be in order (before 10:30 am).
