OK, that was fast!

I like the two dates. It's such a beautiful ride, it's fun to see it in different times of the year.

I'll be out of the country for the first date... :(

But I guess I'll just have to make darn sure I can make the second date. Thanks again for setting this up, Ken!

Given the near record snowfall this late winter and early spring I doubt Windy Ridge will be open by May 21. Darn.

You maybe right, but it doesn't stop us from trying.

Let me ask you (all of you) a few questions:

Does getting on your bike and riding the back roads to Randle or Mt. Rainier Nat. Park on a loop ride out of Seattle where you skirt past Yakima and up the Yakima river on SR821, then US 97 to Leavenworth and finishing up on US 2 back to Seattle interest you? Or if 400 miles is too long, how about cutting it short and riding back on I-90 for only 300-350 miles?

or If you are riding out of Portland,

Does a ride up to Goldendale sound good? North to SR500 east to Cougar and Swift Reservoir, then FR 90 - FR23 to Troutlake, then Glenwood, Goldendale, Klickitat and back home on SR 14.

You ride an FJR, all this should be a piece of cake and a ride to Windy Ridge is going to be close to 300 miles anyway. The whole idea of the Volcano Ride was to get out and ride in the mountains around Mt. St. Helens. After all, Mt. Rainier, Adams and Hood are also Volcanoes. Stopping at different points of interest and running into others (friends) that just happen to find the CALL a good idea. You don't actually have to make it to Windy Ridge. It is more of a common ride day with a like location and and just a good EXCUSE to ride.

Funny, every time I thinkof this idea/concept, I think that there should be 100's people that would want to do it, just to get out and ride. Once during a Volcano ride we ran into over 50 VFR's, that also had a CALL to Windy Ridge on that same day.

See you there or there about.

I enjoy riding 400+ miles in a days. The secret to long day trips is lots of daylight (May, June July), Camelback with water, earplugs to reduce noise fatigue, a Russell seat and Helibars. I am in the south Seattle area.

Last year in one day I road, North Crashcades Hwy, Blewett Pass, Yakima River Canyon, White Pass and Cayuse Pass, a four pass blast. I would have done Chinook but it was closed - darn.

This year a six pass blast is in mind doing the above, but including Loop Loop and Chinook.

The FJR is an ideal mount for munching miles.

Jim

Volcano Ride Date Change: I changed the Spring date to a Summer date: June 24th (now June 25th. That should get us to the top.

OK, I'm still game...

But, how about the longer ride you suggested. That sounds great as well. If we can't go up it in the spring, let's go around it.

Just to keep this Ride active in you mind, I am changing the Date AGAIN to June 25th, Saturday. (I thought I had it on a Saturday???? Bad me)

Grandpa? Then you may qualify, if over 62, to buy a Golden Age Pass at the National Parks sites or online. It will cost you $10 and will be good for any pass requirements on Mt. St. Helens. For all you other dudes, you need to buy a pass for the day or the year, just in case the Ranger is writing tickets that day. ( I have never seen a ticket written, but there is always a first time, especially with every gov. department going in the red.)

Some news regarding FR 90 from Cougar to Curly Creek Rd. I was talking to a Skamania County Sherrif last week end, while at McClellum view point and he said that the Forest Service is near handing over FR 90 from Cougar to Curly Creek Rd. o the county, at which time Skamania Co. will have to improve it. He said that when that happens (a few years in the works I'm sure) those losy patches done a few years ago along Swift Res. will be fixed. This is good news, except for the number of tickets that will also follow.

Windy Ridge is closed as of June 15. I called the main office and they indicated opening sometime in early July. Right now it is only open from Randle to FR 99 and 99 is closed to Windy Ridge. 25 is closed from that turn off to south end. You can check the following link for road conditions.

Just like WFO, the official Volcano Ride in the spring is off. Fall ride is still on.

I was looking forward the Windy Ridge ride. Still, I will take Friday off, get off this Island and probably ride around the Olympic Peninsula. Any way I will ride for 3 days and then go home. See ya in September.
