"Fiddly bits" in my book are gas, oil, tires, wiper blades, and maybe coolant & ATF on occasion, anything else is just asking way too much. <_<

Those are the only fiddly bits I've ever had to deal with with our VeeDubs. Replace "ATF" with gear oil (you choose which mtf you like).

The idea is, to keep a German car running properly you need to maintain it. They do not take kindly to neglect. That is all. If you do so, they tend to reward you with a much better driving experience than their rivals, except maybe Mazda.

Sure, other brands may allow the owners to neglect them more, but I bet they don't feel like any of the Germans when you are behind the wheel. If you want a car to thrash and not care about, just go buy a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic and be done with it.

My daughter had a Jetta for awhile and it was nothing but trouble.....
The battery kept going dead and I finally figured out the alternator had a short in it.

Among other things:

-broken door handles

-windows that would spontaneously fall due to broken mounts

-coil packs subject to shorts

-ignition switch shorts

-brake light shorts

-one water pump

I'm sooo happy it's long gone!

To be more accurate and fair the engineering of this car was good. The ergonomics , design, and handling were great.

The problem was build quality and specifically the quality of the parts provided by suppliers.

I hate this German car! I can't work on it!
Shoot...That's just about every car out there these days. I have no idea what's going on under the hood of any of my cars.

However, I do know that regardless of how "good" a German car "feels" when you drive it, I know that my 99 Ford F-150 4X4 with 115,000 miles on it has always felt tight, is only on its second set of shocks and tires, and fires up every time I turn the key.

All the electrics work, and ever since it turned about 90k, it will smoke the tires right off the rims.

Purchased a new VW Rabbit Diesel in 1980. Biggest P.O.S. I ever had.

Turn on the A/C and it sounded like a wind tunnel. I took it back to dealership ,, they said it

was an engineering problem , nothing they could do.

Drivers door wouldn't close right , they told me "I'd" have to get a 2x4 and pry on the door to try and get

it to fit better.

Seemed like the damn thing was in the shop about every six months and it cost $600 every time..

About every 6 month or so it would break the alternator bolt..

Didn't have enough power to get out of it's own way, Got tired of semi's pushing me UP hill on the freeway.

If I remember right it was about $8500 new in 1980 ,,, biggest POS and the biggest waste of $8500 ever....

NEVER buy a VW (or a CHRYSLER, that's another story ) again. :angry2:

You mean there's another way?

Demolition derby has an alluring appeal. :derisive:

That makes sense. Because you had problems in 1980, THIRTY years ago, you should totally write off the current. Brilliant logic my man.

PS: if you still had that Rabbit Diesel, you'd be able to sell it for a pretty penny.

My new to me 06 Mazda6. Full boat. I forgot what it was like to actually enjoy driving.

You're right, but if only the problems stayed 30 years ago.

My brother bought a Rabbit about 10 years ago...biggest pos he ever had. He liked it...but it was ALWAYS in the shop for something.

My coworker bought a Scirrocco (sp?) about 5 years ago, ALWAYS in the shop.

So...wtf is wrong with this supposedly great german manufacturing???

And I like Germans...I mean wtf?

My 1984 VW Rabbit was an amazing car. In 8 years, aside from oil changes and a tune up here and there the only thing I needed to repair/replace were the front shocks just before I sold it. Spunky fun lil thing to drive. Went EVERYWHERE in the snow.

Now have a 2002 Diesel Jetta 4 door sedan and am loving it. Haven't owned it long enough to know how it will be mechanically/repair-wise, but the way this car rolls I know my lifelong perfect score driving record is about to fall. I am gonna get a ticket; the thing is incapable of staying within any posted speed limit.

Freaking JOY to drive!

(the rear wheel drifts driving into Pt. Alice were ummm...errmmm.....fun. Broke in the new Pirellis :p )

Worst car I owned? Volvo 940 Turbo.

Rolled like a dream, comfy to be in, well appointed leather ineterior blah blah blah, but a freaking financial nightmare mechanically. It was a virtual automotive money pit, and a POS to drive in the snow. Nevah again.

Sciroccos haven't been stateside since 1992. Do you mean Corrado? The last year those came to the USA was 1995. Either way, you are looking at a minimum 15 year old vehicle.

I'm not saying the problems didn't linger. In fact, I'd say random lemons aside, they lingered in to the late 90's or even right around 2000-2001. Since then, VW QC is markedly improved.

Thank goodness you added that last sentence Wheatie, Petey was becoming extremely concerned about you!

I'm sorry...I meant Passat.

Either way, it sounds like some people have no problems...where others have more than they'd like. I guess you can say that about most mfrs...but the people closest to me had bad experiences...so I personally would be leery.

i agree. that's why it dropped off my "consideration" list. those things he listed ain't cheap. he's replacing another electric window motor this weekend.

,, did you read the orginal post ? after 30 years sounds pretty much the same to me..

Old saying,, fool me once, shame on you ,,, fool me twice shame on me ..

I had GM products 30 some years ago also... had good luck with them ... Still do.

ps. and A pretty Penny is probably what one is worth...

congrats! any reason for not getting the Speed6?
I was looking for a Speed6, 'cept all the ones I found were either overpriced or had marginal turbo seals. Risky buy. The dumb bit is 2 days after I bought this, my buddy traded in his doted over Speed6 on a truck.

This one is V6 mit der 6spd auto. It's got a bit of a scoot. But not as much as THE scoot!
