Great video. :clapping:
Don, are your plans still a go for an Alaska trip in 2010?
Yes. Work and all still pose formidable opponents - but I have acquired an impressive arsenal of farkles for Wabs -

and have been researching, learning, discovering..

so yes, optimistically, YES!

:yahoo:

I'm not getting any younger, and time passes so quickly.. if you get my drift...

Senor Carver, My friend Michael O'Keefe, Owner of San Diego BMW, sent me an invite to Moto Quest Tours Seminar on Alaska they're having on December 11. This is same Alaska presentation that SkooterG, GSJane and a bunch of us from FJR Forum and AZ Beemers went to in September at Scottsdale, Arizona. PLEASE NOTE: My San Diego friend Michael O'Keefe is not the same as our Sacramento friend "Old Michael" O'Keeffe. Both Irish, but different guys. We Irish do tend to run in wolf packs!

"Dear Don,

We are inviting you to a presentation from Moto Quest Tours on Adventure Riding in Alaska on Friday night, December 11, at 6:30pm, on our showroom floor.

Phil Freeman started Alaska Rider Tours 11 years ago. He was born and raised in Alaska, and has ridden extensively throughout Alaska and Northwest Canada. He has lead numerous trips to Prudhoe Bay and has recently launched MotoQuest, an international motorcycle adventure company now in 11 countries.

Phil would love to share some of his knowledge about riding to Alaska and riding to the end of the roads throughout Alaska. He will talk about what to expect, and also tell you about out of the way places to go. This is a great presentation for those who are interested in riding to Alaska on their own and for those interested in doing a self guided or guided tour in Alaska.

As an extra special treat, Phil will be bringing some true smoked Alaskan salmon for you to sample, and we will be providing some extra nibbles to enjoy throughout his presentation.

But that's not all - you can also win a free 3-day F800GS rental in Alaska from Moto Quest by entering your name into the drawing on the night.

Come meet Phil and learn about riding Alaska !

If you plan on attending, please RSVP to us, preferably by responding to this email so that we may cater appropriately.

Feel free to contact us with any questions regarding the presentation. We can be reached at 858-560-BIKE (2453).

Sincerely,

Michael O'Keefe

Thanks BeemerD, but Friday is all but impossible. Besides, I just put brand new K-Knobbie tires on Wabs, and I'm going dirty first while them k-knobs are still fresh
On a side note, Wabs got new c/s and rear sprocket, and chain, to boot.

Interestingly enough she runs 5.25 chain, 5.20 is more readily available and cheaper too.

Next go-round, pre AK, she'll be resplendent in 5.20 with an old school, oh-my-gawd-don't-run-it old-fahioned *clip-style-MasterLink! :****: them kids these days, what the hell do they know? How ya supposed to bustaChain in the middle of no-wheres-ville, eh?

..and I forgot to mention,

Wabs went through 20k miles today!

Happy 20k Wabs, you Wabinator you, and Thanks to TWN for helping with the first buch o' miles too, just sayin :****: followed by Hugs n Kisses, mi amigo, yer steed is fine and rocking down the road, just like you taught her to!

Don,

I've been researching this whole chain and sprocket mystical religion. Clips versus rivets seem like oil and tire pressure choices. ;)

But have you seen the chains with screws? I'm curious about what you think. If you aren't familiar with them I can supply a link -- I don't know how new they are. I'm looking to change the sprockets to make the KLR pig more dirt worthy. It came with a continuous chain but I have to figure out this whole master link thing some day.

Congratulations on reaching 20K miles!

Man, now I know where I'm going to buy my BMW dualsport. And I'll tell 'em Papa Chuy sent me.

DISS - COUNT!
https://www.sdbmwmc.com/catalog/product_inf...roducts_id=5264 Old Michael, If you are indeed in the market for a BMW dual sport, Brother O'Keefe has a really nice BMW G650GS demonstrator on sale for a very good price.

This BMW G650GS is the same off road M/C that Jill, our La Pingunia Plata, aka Miss Silver Penguin, rides. Great bike for off road!

If you were pursuing this, I would lean on our fellow Fenian "Belfast Irish Style" to get you the best possible discount obtainable!

Mi Hermano Donaldo, I thought you might be interested in this Friday, so you could combine an Alaska Motorcycling Seminar with a "golfing" expedition with Fairlaner, McRide and djbill in San Diego. And we all know what the true code word for "golfing" with Richard in San Diego is (strip clubs!!).

So Don, are you riding to Baja-Cabo on Wabs with Khunajawdge and Papa Chuy? George and I set up the dates so you can go, March 16 crossing of Mexican border; you've no excuses because Cal-Poly is shut down for Spring Break. Mr. Jercich has to be back to work on Monday, March 28 just like you do. NO EXCUSES, Hombre!!!

Occurs to me I need to learn how to

1. Fish

2. Shoot bears

3. Be comfie in a tent

4. Take Dollie the sheep to AK....
I was in Alaska in 06 on a KLR650 and rode the pipeline from the north end to the south. We missed the last little bit when we turned off to head to Anchorage.

I have a little report over on ADV Rider on that ride...

2006 Alaska Trip

After the Copper Canyon ride I'm toying with a supported ride to the base camp of Mount Everest through a motorcycle tour company out of India but the mention of 8000 metre passes (about 25000 ft) might not be a great idea for a flatlander such as myself. The highest (in elevation) I've been was 13000 ft during a ski trip and I was sucking wind.

Wabs - Alaska update

It's now October 2010, I'm working heavy OT at the local nookie plant, refueling outage 1R16. Working 6x12, this my 'day' off and I've been reviewing this thread.

Since the original post, Patti, Tim's wife, has passed on. So have many of my other friends. It seems my Pop's was right, the 50's are, and I quote, 'the killing years.'

Has it really been two years since I purchased Wabs and TWN's passing?

And I didn't make Alaska in 2010. :****:

What excuses did I use?

Work?

Money?

Time?

Wimp?

... and time ticks away.

Mr. Arthur and his 'itis' consume like rust

So then, another outage in spring 2011. 6 weeks off work for that.

How receptive will work be to a long vacation request in the same year? Not very.

After spring 2011, the next outage is a year away meaning the next window is 2012.

Crap, really, 2012 for AK?

Sigh.

On a brighter note, I've been learning more about Wabs.

  • Recently installed an Eastern Beaver lighting kit that 'kills' one headlight for power savings - so to run heated gear and what not. A simple, clean, and inexpensive farkle.
  • Wabs starter switch failed on me - to start Wabs, the tranny has to be in neutral, the clutch lever in, and when depressing the start switch the headlight cuts out to save precious current for the starter motor. The switch went bad, and even when running, no headlights. For now, I've cut and spliced the wires, will order a new switch assembly later. Kind of PITA in that I have to connect two wires together, turn key on, pull clutch in, then manually disconnect wires before using clutch again (as it will engage the starter on a running engine). Before AK, all this safety crap will be killed.
Still have not installed heavier fork springs, replaced rear shock. The major issue with Wabs is lack of ground clearance. She just doesn't have any, and this is an off-road Achilles heal. Not sure what to do here, or if it's worth the dollars.

In the mean time, Wabs really is a sweet gurl. She is ready and easy to ride, the engine cadence sweet and pure. The lighter weight and more up-right riding position is nice too.

I guess I need to probe the possibility of a 2011 AK trip with the boss.

My personal promise to Tim was, and is, to take Wabs to AK.

(pretty simple in the conclusion, eh?)

...more to come

I miss my buddy. :****:

yamafitter - Thanks for the reply! I read your ADV rider report - very nice.

OMG...has it really been 2 years? It really does sseem like only yesterday I was reading his posts...isn't it great that fond memories compress time and cover our hurts.

Don, plans are a good thing. Plans and realistic dreams that aren't reached are still healthy for one's psyche.

I'll be crossing my fingers for a good solution from your boss and your bank account. :yahoo:

Senor Don Carver, I'm calling you up today! Jorge-Khunajawdge and Papa Chuy cross into Baja MEX for a Run to Land's End on March 16. You can MAKE this ride, ese!
