Today I bought a new 2009 FRJ1300A. For about $500 I can get a 4 year warranty from Yamaha. I would like opinions if purchasing an extended warranty is a good idea.

Any other recommendations for a 54 year old FJR noob are welcome.

I will pickup my ride in a couple of weeks, after the dealer installs the farkles; Heli bar risers, heat grips using Grand Touring grips some wiring for my GPS, clothing and Battery Tender.

Suggestions on windscreens are also welcome. The stock one isn't going to cut it.

Thanks,

Jim Fontana

Warranty:

FAQ Section>'06-'09 Bin-O-Facts:

Y.E.S. Factory Warranty (Yamaha Extended Service Plan)$389 from D&H Cycle, 18115 US Hwy 31, Cullman, AL 35058, 256-739-1840, 888-553-3311

YES coverage can be bought from one dealer and apply to any other dealer fairly easily.

The one exception are Florida residents. That state is totally screwed up and passed a law that residents can only get insurance from in-state agents.

From Headude (May 21, 2007):

If you purchase through the special Yamaha financing promotion you can get an extra $25 off the Y.E.S. plan.

If you use Yamaha's special financing promotion to buy, in about 7-10 days you get a "credit card" in the mail with a coupon for $25 off the extended service plan.

There is a deadliine to take advantage of the offer, so check all dates on all paperwork/coupons, etc.
If you like your dealer and don't mind throwing a little profit their way, buy it from them.

Personally, I think the peace of mind is worth the price. One major issue and it'd be a GREAT investment.

Windshield?

That is going to depend on your height and inseam (which will indicate how "high" you might sit in the saddle.

I'm sure there will be many who have experience who will post their own experiences.

There is NO "windshield nirvana", merely a happy balance.

Congrats on the new bike.

I definitely recouped my investment with the extended warranty on my '05. And, like the last poster said - D&H Cycles (in Cullman, Alabama?) will save you about $110 on the 4-year YES.

There are about a gazillion threads on aftermarket windshields - search "windshields" or "shields" and read at your leisure - Only thing to keep in mind is GenI ('03 - '05) and Gen II are incompatible. Fixes and shields that worked on GenI won't fly on GenII. All the big players have aftermarket shields, though: Rifle, CeeBailey, and CalSci off the top of my head.

Don't dump your stock windshield immediately. The Rifle tuning block works wonders with my stock shield - cleans up the airflow tremendously, so it's my summer setup - but, I run a GenI and have no idea if the same is true for GenII.

I have been doing business with my dealer for 25+ years, and when I bought my '08, I mentioned to him about the YES warranty offered by D&H. I told him that I would rather buy it from him, but not for the suggested retail of around $700. We agreed an a price of $400. Dealers can set their own price on this. Yes, all dealers have to honor the YES warranty, but if you can haggle with your dealer for the best price, I bet that your bike would get serviced quicker from the goodwill that buying locally would generate.

I am 5' 10" with a 30" inseam. I have tried the V-Stream, the Yamaha touring shield, and the Cee Baileys 2" taller and stock width reverse flip. The Cee Baileys worked best for me. Gives relatively clean air when full down, and excellent protection when full up.

You will love this bike :yahoo:

I bought my YES from D&H. Great folks to work with.

I asked the dealer from whom I purchased the bike about a YES plan. I told him I would give him $400 for the YES plan, but he was not interested. Asked another local shop about their price for the YES and their response was "How does $600 sound for the YES"....like he was doing me a big favor or something. I didn't mention to either what I could get it for at D&H, I just wanted to see what their prices would be. I just told them that I would think about it and let it go at that. You can purchase the YES anytime during your first year of ownership. You don't have to purchase it right away at time of purchase if you don't want to or have the funds to do so. Just remember to get it in place before the first year of ownership expires. Good investment and transferable.

I didn't like the stock windshield either. There are several apparent good shields out there, but I settled on the National Cycle V-Stream.

Here is a picture of the the two taken side by side with the stock on the left:

I am 5'10", and with the stock and my big ole Charlie Brown head, I was getting lots of wind noise around the helmet (a Shoei). But with the addition of the taller and wider-at-the-top V-Stream, all that went away.

Have fun with your research and farkling.

You probably would have done as well to buy the bike from them in the first place.
