Thanks for all the help folks,I know its probably 101 to some of you guys but this is the first bike I've ever had,so some..... well ok ALL of this is new to me. You have no idea how stupid i feel when an oil filter can kick my ***,yet yesterday I refused let death steal a baby from its mother and won! So for what it's worth to you guys thanks ALOT,no sarcasm involved. This website has helped me out more than any of you guys know. Hell, Warchild even taught me how to give a *******! I'm usually the one giving lessons :D

Again thank you everyone!

I keep thinking that I want to get one of those oil filter wrenches that look like a shallow socket and fit on the end of the filter, but I haven't remembered to get one while buying a filter. You need to get one specific to the size filter you use so it's best to buy one while you have the new filter in your hand.
I got one of those, worthless. The thing wasn't deep enough to keep it from sliding "back and around", given that the filter was slightly rounded on the places it grabs. I was pushing in toward the bike hard enough to almost knock it over.

I have two of those that I bought from various chain auto parts stores. One is plastic, and one is metal. Both work very well, so I am not sure why yours doesn't. I don't use them anymore due the Riley highway pegs. Now I use one of the rubber strap wrenches.

I had to do the screwdriver trick early on when I used to torque the filter to specs. Actually, I think the screwdriver didn't work either, and eventually I kinda flattened the filter a bit and used channel locks to finally get it. That S.O.B was NOT going to beat me. :angry2:

Now of course, I only hand tighten the filters. DO NOT tighten them to the 12 ft-lb torque spec that Yammie gives. It will always be a major ***-pain to remove the filter if you do that.

Lot's of Ideas on this topic. I torqued my first Bosch filter to yami specs and when I tried to get it off it wouldn't budge. Tried the strap wrench and it just started collapsing the filter. Tried the ole screw driver through the middle and it just started tearing. Before it got out of control I went to the automotive store and found some curved channel locks with teeth made specific for oil filter removal. They worked great after I figured out to move in as close as I could to the engine. I use them almost every time now to remove the filter just because they are so easy to use. I think I got them at O'rileys. The difference between the automotive filters and the Yamaha filter is the Yami filter has a o-ring instead of the flat surface gasket. It will break loose easier after the specified torque. Because of the extra gasket surface the automotive filters need to be hand tightened, just like you do on your car. I haven't had a problem since.

If you spun the nut off a K&N filter, you're putting them on too tight. As the other posters put, I tighten as much by hand, then maybe another quarter to half turn with a strap wrench and thats it.

I have always used the Yami filter socket and never had a problem. When there WAS any difficulty coming of I just tapped it end of the ratchet with a rubber hammer until I detected a little movement, then off it came. Point is, the Yami oil wrench has always worked well. FWIW

My factory-installed filter was extremely tight, too. I used a very large channel lock pliers to get it off. It crushed the filter, but it came loose. I haven't had any further problems with the filters I installed.

Same here......

Hey,

Another trick I've heard of is to drill three holes in the metal strap of the filter wrench and run a self tapping screw through the strap and into the filter. Still would be kind of messy but maybe not as much as a screwdriver through the filter.

Uh, you may wanna explain that to any newbies so they don't get the wrong idea! :puke:

-allow me: he's talking about flushing out the cooling system!

Are people using impact wrenchs on their oil filters?

I like to tighten and remove oil filters by hand. But for those times when it is not possible I use a nice stamped aluminum oil filter wrench which fits the common Honda 15410-MM9-013 oil filter found on the Honda ST, CB, CBR, VFR. It also fits the OEM FJR oil filter and many more. About $8.

Looks kinda like this: https://store.yahoo.com/pitposse/oilfiwr.html

Unfortunately I didn't get the anodized gold wrench. :>( But I have a feeling it works very much like the plain aluminum.

I use a strap filter that uses a nylon strap. The factor installed filter was tight but couldn't resist such convincing.

Interesting post here. I have alway put my oil filters on hand tight. I have never had them leak, or even loosen. Even on the track up to 12k rpm, and 170+mph no probs.

Here is a little mechanic's tip that will work, plumbers use it all the time on pipe that will not break or come loose. All you have to do is put your wrench on,strap or pliers and tigheten it about a 1/4 turn then turn the filter in the direction for taking it off, surprise it will un screw like new. ;)
