Geez! Ya'll are so critical of my little fuel cell comment! I would like to get good enough to make my own cell some day, but I do realize that it would NOT be a good 'school project' when I'm just learning.
Although I think Gunny was expecting me to call him up and say something like "Hey come over this weekend, I'm gunna try sumthin and need yah ta hol'e mu beer!" :focus:
Ya know, you could always practice on Gunny's bike - I'm sure he wouldn't mind -

Thanks for all the excellent advise as usual! I am a plumber by trade so I can solder without a problem and in general I am pretty handy with power tools, construction, etc....I'm pretty quick at picking up skills that interest me but its always important for me to learn from someone who has practical experience. I have a neighbor across the street from me who is a commercial fisherman and he was going to teach me but he is pretty old and has been ill lately. There isn't anything in particular that I want to build or modify but its just another skill that I would like to learn. Lately I've been thinking about doing some sculpture/artsy **** using rebar which necessitates welding but thats just something to kill time when its to crappy out to ride. The local community college idea didn't even cross my mind but I'm going to check into that. At this point, I think fuel cells are a couple of weeks away.

Haynes makes a Welding Manual (under ten bucks I think, for sure under twenty). You can get a real good idea of what you may want to get into by perusing the manual as they go over torch, mig, tig, stick, etc.
