What is best post-ride refreshment?

It seems kind of civilized to finish off a long day of riding by enjoying a little nip of something - be it at home, in a motel room or around a campfire. While Bust was posting his OM-single malt-sheep-porn thread this evening, I was at a "Spirits Festival" and did some tasting in search of a little sumthin' sumthin' for my sidecase. Not necessarily in this order:

Makers Mark (bourbon)

Glenfiddich Ancient Reserve 18 (very nice)

Balvenie Madeira Oak 17 (very nice @ $120; available only in NB and Manitoba! I bought 4 bottles for a friend in Toronto to give to his clients)

Wild Africa Cream

Patron Silver Tequila (VERY smooth)

Forty Creek Double Barrel (made-in-Ontario whiskie)

El Dorado (rum @ $475; pretty sweet - literally)

Plantation Grenada (rum)

Sauza Tres Generaciones Anejo (@ $75.50; also very nice)

a Sidecar made with Remy Martin

a "cointreaupolitan"

Eight Below (vodka - straight and in the most watered down martini EVER; I had made a 'date' with one of the surgeons I work with to meet at the 'martini station' at the end of the event; we decided we still need to have a REAL <gin> martini sometime....)

I like a cold beer, too, but it's hard to keep it cold in the sidecases! I'll stick with a single-malt scotch for a no fuss, no muss drink; or a nice, aged rum. No water or ice required.....

Wow. Your list is all over the map in terms of tastes, so it's awfully hard to tell what you are after.

Maybe if you gave us a description of what your ideal portable potable would be like we could make some suggestions toward fulfilling those goals?

For myself, I'm a fairly old fashioned type of drinker. I tend to gravitate to the same 2 drinks, switching only with the seasons. In summertime it is a Martini and in the cooler months it is a Manhattan (both on the rocks).

The latter is a very nice drink after a chilly ride. Bourbon's warming with just a touch of sweetness from the vermouth. I'm also a cheap bastid and do not generally spring for the "top shelf" base liquors. It's not really very important once you add the vermouth, IMO, and I do add the vermouth (3:1). I actually prefer Gordon's or Beefeaters gin to many of the more trendy upscales (Bombay or Tranqueray), and am perfectly happy with Ezra Williams or Jim Beam bourbons.

For travel, these drinks can easily be premixed and carried in a container. Then at the hotel, just add ice! Salud! :drinks:

Herradura was the favorite tequila of Jose Doroteo Arango Arambula, better known to we gringos as Francisco "Pancho" Villa!

+1 Outstanding choices. Although we do ours "shaken, not stirred" and strain the ice. We've also been known to pick up a good cab to throw in the trunk on the way to the motel

All that said, I DO enjoy a nice classic-dry (5-1) gin martini - any time of the year. Just never occurred to me to pre-mix. Duh.

And I haven't tried Don's tequilla. Yet.

Well, honestly, a martini purist would cringe at the idea of carrying around a premix. Bruise the gin, or some such nonsense. And on the rocks is frowned upon too, for that matter. But hey, that's just how I roll. In fact, I don't even like a dry martini all that much. I'll drink one, usually because I've run outr of vermouth and I'm too lazy to get more! :lol:

But for some weird reason I actually like the balance that you get with the vermouth at the standard (3:1) ratio. Many of my friends dis me as they merely wave the vermouth bottle over the martini glass with the cap still on. (definition of an extra dry martini)

Here's my suggestion: You can't effectively decide which drink is "the one" when they are all mixed up like that. So do it sequentially instead. One night sit down and compare scotches. Next night compare bourbons. etc. etc. You may never reach a solid conclusion, but you'll sure will have a hell of time (not) doing it!
