Howdy! Well, here it is August and I just re-read my old post re: Gen v. Gen II. So I am now ready to make the switch to an FJR and am seeing a 2005 for near $6,000 w/ 30k on the odo. Says he's second owner and had it for most of the miles. Is this in the ballpark for price, assuming it has been loved? My dear old bike is pushing me to upgrade. I am ready to expand my envelope. After reading the previous posts it seems to boil down to heat issues on the Gen I bikes, but being a newcomer I would not know the difference, right?
Not a *great* price, but seems pretty fair. General rule of thumb right now is close to $1000 per model year ($5k for an 05, $6k for an 06, etc)
By my observation, the rule of thumb is off by about $600-$1000 as the economy recovers, and we are in peak summer season. You can't keep applying last year's sales to current conditions, and things are UP this year. Much depends on condition and accessories. My guess would be that there is about $500 of negotiating room built into the ask.

Very true...location plays a big part too (differing parts of the country demand different prices)

Thanks for that. I have decided to purchase an FJR before I move to Kentucky at the years end. Prices and inventory for used bikes are higher and far more scarce respectively in the upper South...Inventory on the west coast has spoiled me. Thanks for the input. I felt that rule of thumb seemed accurate.

seriously, don't purchase a bike without abs...<don't ask me personally why... >

my next bike will be a Gen 1 but with the optional abs...gen II's are just fine, too

seriously :)

I have an 04 and applied a few of the heat fixes and feel heat is no problem. I was in 28 degree weather all the way up to 98 degrees in one day last September on my ride to the left cost last year and the 04 was great. I had a 94 connie before that and this bike is cooler in stop and go than it was. There are some good roads here in Kentucky to explore too.

Hey there,

Movin' your direction soon, DRJFJR. Thanks for the input. The '05 I was looking at has a "NASA" heat wrap to address the problem, guess that is good(?) Nice to hear about the older Connie, I was thinking about those as well. Still would prefer an FJR

Genll riders have tiny peckers and an average IQ of 16.. They need each other to feel good aboot themselves, unlike us Gen l porn stars..

Well, that's good to know ! Now I feel like I belong on a Gen I bike. Thanks for the heads-up. Either way is fine then.
Yup...You'll fit in with the GenI losers just fine. They all have even smaller peckers and swing both ways. Barry actually swings 3 or 4 ways.

One more item of interest I have noticed on an older post somewhere is that for most of its life the FJR was gaining an average of around 10 lbs per year thus making the older bikes a little sportier than the newer ones. Just needing a little shock exchange.

Q. How many Gen 1 drivers does it take to change a lightbulb?

A. About a dozen. One to actually change the lightbulb, and the other 11 to stand around in the bar telling everyone how much better the old lightbulb was.

Fixed.

Where are you moving to in KY? There's 4 of us that I know of. Jonathan08 and myself are from the educated part of the state, across from Cincinnati. E.T is from between Frankfort and Louisville. drjfjr is from Louisville, which is alright as long as he's a UK fan and hates U of L like the majority of reasonable Kentuckians.

+1 Seriously, get ABS. Unless in SOCAL or the southwest where it rains little. It has saved me from at least two deer.

Speaking of aftermarket upgrades: GenI riders all upgraded to 1200 baud modems some time last year. Heeeeeeeehaw.

I've owned both: a 2005, a 2007, and a 2012.

Overall, I think the Gen IIs were/are better bikes. The improvements Yamaha made to the Gen IIs are mostly pretty subtle.

I'm over in Carlisle, not too far from Alexandria.

So, longer gearing (less acceleration), longer swingarm (less hoonability), nearly a 50bs of weight on an already overweight bike and electrical system like a toaster that can leave you stranded at anytime.

Guess that explains why my next bike will either be another Gen 1, or something else.

Hey,

I just closed escrow on a house in Lexington, son just graduated from UK and I am pulling the plug on work at year's end. I'll be looking for some riding buddies and looking to make a new life back East. As for the gen1-gen 2 debate: I am getting an education while the bs flies to and fro' Good stuff!
