I've owned both: a 2005, a 2007, and a 2012.

Overall, I think the Gen IIs were/are better bikes. The improvements Yamaha made to the Gen IIs are mostly pretty subtle.
So, longer gearing (less acceleration), longer swingarm (less hoonability), nearly a 50bs of weight on an already overweight bike and electrical system like a toaster that can leave you stranded at anytime.

Guess that explains why my next bike will either be another Gen 1, or something else.
Go nuts dude. Electrical problems also around on Gen Is, do a couple searches (oh yeah they are on many sport touring bikes given the right sample size). A ground spider recall is free a stator is not. For sport touring, I'd much rather have the greater electrical power out of a GenII. Don't think it's overweight for that purpose either (Gen I or Gen II). Maybe a lighter, sportier six speed rather than a s/tourer. Different strokes. . Good luck on quest.

Gen I - Gen II

As I lurk here learning about the general aspects of these bikes I see that there is a following for generation 1 bikes. I presume that they just keep getting better, but apparently some owners don't agree. What sets the two generations apart aside from ABS and heated grips. Will anybody care to enlighten a neophyte . I'm riding a 1983 BMW r65 while learning and building experience. My bike is fine, a bit dated and seems even to me to be a bit on the slow side. I know that's good for learning but it is also a handicap in some situations.
Here's something for you on the Gen I's and II's - Click - Gen I & II's

Huh? I've been around here since before the beginning and I have no idea what you are talking about. Please enlighten me on the Gen I electrical problems and stator issues.

If you are going to use electrical problems as an issue in Gen I vs. Gen II, then you are bringing a knife to a gunfight. ;)

+1, Gunny: Well Spoken My ******* Son, I've never heard of stock stator problems on a Gen I, Electrosport stators have had failures but certainly not the stock stators!
