What's your fuel mileage?

40-42 in stop and go. Could be less for really terrible stop and go.

46-48 on rural twisties with few "foot down" events and average speeds of 50ish.

44-46 on I-40 with trafffic (typically 80+ mph average stream) and some passing (brief twists to 100 mph).

Above on straight run gasoline.

Current skunk p*ss passing as fuel called gasohol gives 2 to 3 mpg lower in every category.

 
47.5 MPG, stock ignition, 5500 feet elevation, 2 up most of the time, running above the speed limit most of the time but not racing. Mountians and flats combined.

 
My mileage varies way to much, depending on my mood and riding style, to rely on this measurement for detecting maintenance issues. So, I am seriously left to wonder why anyone would care?
The reason I care is that I'm going on an IBA-style ride and I want to know my range. My bike's so new to me that I haven't ridden tank-to-tank on the highway yet. Normally I don't compute miles per gallon, but I do keep an eye on miles per fillup. That number is very important when riding competitively, has Hal knowingly pointed out.

Also I am enjoying the poll results and peoples' comments.

Just from reading the post's ,looks like 38/to 48 are your average exstremes.

On the why,one post said they don't see the need to wonder about it.I for one like to try,and ride at a sporting pace(for me),And use fuel mileage as a tool to see how smooth I'm riding,though acceleration,and deceleration.Checks things,like to use/or not to use to much brake;no brake...etc......

Hiya Jerry.

I ride an '07 (Gen II) with stock tank. BJM done but left at default values. No PC. Rider ain't no lightweight pretzel boy neither, 250-270 lbs with gear.

Overall average is 42 MPG. Generally, 32-35 stop-n-go, curves and mini-drag races. 42-44 highway cruising. Highest AV MPG to date has been 56.1 and the lowest has been 28.4. Both are anomalies that I threw out of my overall average calc.

I plan for 200 miles a tank which leaves a large margin of error for wind/terrain/making up for poor route planning. :rolleyes:

Here are my averages and trip meter miles for the LOE Rally last weekend (44.1 AV MPG):

AV 45.2 [232.2]

AV 47.1 [227.5]

AV 46.5 [184.6]

AV 47.5 [100.0]

AV 44.5 [157.6]

AV 35.9 [95.9]

AV 41.7 [166.4]

Mostly highway speeds (Ira recommended speeds that is). ;)

 
My 2007 with a stock engine, a CalSci XL, bags always on with a 260 pound 6'-4" operator gets 35 to 39 mpg cross country at 75 mph depending on wind conditions.

City mpg ranges from 34 to 38.

Mountain riding at a touring pace with photo stops gets me 42 to 45 mpg.

Mountain riding at a spirited pace with some play gets me about 35 to 36 mpg.

Mix of city and back country roads at speeds of 50 to 65 mph will get me 45+ mpg with early shifts and a small amount of traffic.

But, I've moved to Florida for a job and the ride is all stop and go, red light to red light for 8 miles. I get 34.9 mpg riding "normal" to 50 mph max in 4th gear and 38 or so mpg riding easy at 45 to 50 mph and getting into 5th quickly. I've gotten in the low 34 range at times, I don't like to poke around with all the "Florida Drivers" trying to kill me.... get gone and out of the way or get run over.

I always got 40 mpg plus when in the NC mountains on my normal ride to work. Now I'm at sea level and I see less than 35 mpg hand figured most of the time. I'm all city now, 45 mph zones and lots of red lights. :(

I'm looking for fuel at 160 miles city with F trip counting away and on the intestate I get about 180 till the fuel light comes on. With the light on I usualy put in about 4.4 to 4.6 gallons, I would say I aveage about 36 mpg city. My fuel light comes on early to me, the most I've put in was like 5.6 gallons at 198 miles of mixed riding in Atlanta with the F meter over 40 miles. So, I guess I'm good for 200 miles on average, i usually fill up at 160 to 170 miles in the City, 180 to 190 miles on the Highway when I know where to fill up. In new places on the back roads I fill up or start looking for fuel every 160 miles, I need the rest stop anyway :)

Well that would be me. The other reason I don't get it is that checking gas mileage is a religion with my dad, every single blessed tank. Every time he sees me has asks what kind of gas mileage I'm getting in the minivan. It just doesn't change that much! Drives me nuts in a way only a parent can. :)

08 AE started at 40 and has loosened up to consistant 44 on daily 85 mile roundtrip commute, of which 2/3 is interstate. I do my math at the gas pump and do not rely on the trip computer.

Highway ride to CFR this year, I hit 50mpg and that was averageing close to 80.

82mph is 4000 rpm on the 08

Yes,I use fuel as a tool for smoothness,but that's just a base chart.The rest is probably the same as you ,basicly being smooth with the throttle,and braking/trying to turn with as much body english as possible,and as little hands on force,trying to back-off in traffic(like driving semi's,as little brake as possible going though towns,etc.The less brake,the less throttle).

I do it most of the time,whether on the same road,or not.I'm not always trying to save gas,but I'm 98% ± always trying to be smooth.Whether semi/car/bike,I look ahead and plan as much as I can to get from point A to B,"without getting knocked down,or stepping in something."(Andy Griffen-"What is was,was football").

Well it sounds sensible but it doesn't sound too fun. I guess I'm just a hooligan. I like pushing it a bit in the turns, which probably means more brakes on the other side. When I'm on the freeway and I sense a good opportunity to open 'er up, I do. Maybe that explains why my odo is always counting backwards before I hit 200 miles. :unsure:

 
Just topped off my bike. It's a first-wave, PdP 2003 model.

I had removed the PC, reconnected the O2 sensor, and put the OEM pipes back on prior to my last service before my YES expired.

The entire tank was local, commuting miles, and I got 51.2 mpg.

 
2008 Model Worst MPG 37 Best 54 Average 46, 22 mile each way daily commute average speed range 40mph, slowest speed 30mph max speed 70-80mph

I usually fill up around 240 miles, but I've gone to 270 several times. Over the 13,000 miles on the bike it's averaged 46.2 mpg. I've got the replacement ECU with the Barbarian mod, CO levels increased by 10. The increase seemed to help the jerkiness quite a bit; I may try a little more.

 
Mine varies drastically depending upon rate of travel and driving conditions. Typically fill up with a 1/4 tank or less, yet rarely let the reserve kick on. Thus, fill up is in the 5 to 5.5 gallon range and miles are typically above 185, but rarely above 220.

On freewary traveling consistently over 80 mph -- 52 mpg.

In town with variable speeds -- 37 mpg

Last weekend riding to and from Maupin, OR on highways with an average traveling speed of 70 mph -- 46 mpg

Riding the twisty roads -- 40 mpg.
