UPDATED 1/4/11

Thu May19 Head north from Honderosa?? (with Carver??) and meet up with Highlander...let him show off his favorite roads. Stay overnight at Highlanders.

Fri May20 Strike out from Highlander's and go to the Tyler/Norcal meet: Meet up with Tyler and whomever wants to in Paso Robles - day ride up to the Bay Area through the backroads (lots to choose from) and up 25 into San Jose or thereabouts. Stay overnight at ??????

Sat May21 Tyler/Norcal meet: Ride through Tyler's backyard with brunch at Alice's - head north and over the GG Bridge and into Marin or Russian River area. Stay overnight at ??????

Sun May22 Tyler/Norcal meet: Ride up Hwy 1 (Skaggs to 101 and along the Avenue of the Giants)and into Fortuna. Stay at either the Comfort Inn or the Super 8 across the parking lot (stumbling distance) from the Eel River Brewery.

This part needs refinement. You can make my place in a day from Hondarosa, look at Santa Cruz on the map, I'm 20 minutes away up the hill, so to go to Paso Robles you'd be backtracking south. Tyler, is probably 30 minutes away from my place back into the valley to San Jose / Santa Clara( maybe an hour with the way she rides :p ) Since Tyler offered up first to plan the Bay Area ride, I'll back off and let her detail it for the long weekend, she'll come up with a good plan. Her favorite roads are probably the same as mine anyway. :D

So you may gain an extra day if you leave Hondarosa on Thursday and end up in Santa Cruz mountains that night.

Paging Tyler to the ride planing desk please............
Highlander, I think I hear you saying that there is no point in stopping at your place and have you showing me the roads around your place, because they are probably identical to what Tyler has in mind? Forgive me, but I am a little slow...as you may have noticed. ;)

Thanks Highlander for the comments.

I don't want to have make Tyler adjust her plans, people will want to meet on FRI/SAT/SUN...so no need to adjust those plans. I can adjust mine. Maybe I'll just take a CBA day and go 50 miles somewhere...maybe the Hearst Castle? Maybe linger in the Goleta/Santa Barbara area? Visit some old abandoned farm...take pictures? Or get up to the bay area early and see barb and Tyler? ;) Get "real time" lane sharing advice from JB during an actual commute. :D

BTW, this part will be in flux anyways for awhile until I found out if carver is going to be locked up with work. The Honderosa has not been confirmed yet I don't think. I would be disappointed, to say the least, if it didn't work out to visit the him at the Honderosa, but I surely understand if work has you locked into working during that time. Stuff happens.

Paging Tyler to the ride planing desk please............
Will work on a proposed route tomorrow based on input/feedback. B)

I assume there will be feedback from the peanut gallery. :p
I don't really think you need to adjust your schedule, I'll adjust mine to linger further south or something. -SEE MY COMMENTS ABOVE-

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g32266-d649553-Reviews-Loading_Chute-Creston_California.html Hey Don Carver, when did the Loading Chute Restaurant add an outdoor patio? I don't remember that feature, but then again I have been gone from San Luis Obispo County for 20 years now. I do see that the same culinary staff are working there, whom I remember very well from 1991!!!

I've sent Mark a more detailed route but here's a general recap:

WEDNESDAY, May 18

If Honderosa is not available, suggested lodging at Adelaide Inn, 1215 Ysabel Avenue, Paso Robles. Dinner at Big Bubba’s Bad BBQ.

THURSDAY, May 19

Dcarver ride – if Carver isn’t available, you MUST ride 229 (aka Rossi’s Driveway)… probably several times!! Consider staying in Cambria at The Cambria Palms Motel, 2662 Main Street. Motorcycle friendly place, nice owners. Walk to Mexican restaurant down the street for dinner. Consider the Hearst Castle Tour. Another attraction – Nitt Witt Ridge, the poor man’s Hearst Castle (look it up!).

FRIDAY, May 20

• Meet in Paso Robles @ junction of 101 and 46 East - route will include Vineyard, Peachy Canyon, Chimney Rock, Jolon Rd, 25 - likely he'll stay with Highlander

SATURDAY, May 21

• Hwy 9 (direction dependent upon where staying that evening) - Alice's for breakfast, 84, Pescadero Rd, Stage Rd, make way to GG Bridge (Marin Headlands route), some Marin/Occidental/Russian River backroads (depending on time/energy), stay at Hampton Inn & Suites, 8937 Brooks Rd South, Windsor

SUNDAY, May 22 – several options

• 101 to Dry Creek Rd.

• Dry Creek becomes Skaggs Spring

• Stop at bridge – Annapolis Rd. to Hwy 1

OR

• 101 to 128 to Hwy 1

OR

• Backtrack out 116 to Hwy 1

• North Hwy 1 – lunch in Mendocino or Ft. Bragg

• Continue Hwy 1 north into Leggett

• Hwy 101 North into Fortuna – Avenue of the Giants too!

• Stay at Comfort Inn, 1583 Riverwalk Drive, Fortuna, CA

MONDAY - the Northern contingent takes over from here B)

Some good stuff there. As a personal preference, I'd hit 1 north of the SF bay at least as far south as Jenner (116), because I have always LOVED the Hwy 1 experience north of Bodega Bay.

The main area for refinement seems to me to be the Goleta (breakfast at your Dad's) to Paso Robles segment. That's maybe a three hour ride, but it's two full days here; or said another way -- it's maybe a half a day from your Dad's to Highlander's, but 3 days here. If you're touring Hearst Castle, etc., you'll need that, but if you're just riding, what Messr. Carver has in mind to meld into Tyler's suggested routes is likely the necessary linkage. Not saying there aren't ways to ride some great roads in that area (and I need to pester Carver for a day or two's guided tour in his neck of the woods on roads I haven't ridden) or things to take up your time, but if it were me, I'd try to ride anything around the south bay area on days other than a weekend. BTW, what's in mind for the weekend "get together" and where?

Just trying to raise issues to consider, not to dis anything anyone else has proposed. Seems we're all trying to get Wheaties to spend more time on our own area's roads.

I'm not organizing the weekend meet/gathering/ride...I'm just a guest in your great state.

So I will leave it to the west coasters to thumb wrestle as to where you want to visit and stay. I will go where the people are that weekend...and greet all of you who wish to talk/ride that weekend.

After the weekend, I will ride as much of Norcal and Sierras that I can before I have to cross the ocean of flatness towards home.

I'm just glad you all seem interested in getting together and riding with me while I'm out there...

Well, since I've checked out Tyler's full route planning ( It really rocks !! ) I'd say it's either meet for Breakfast at Alice's on Saturday, and maybe spend the night in Winsor or meet in Paso Robles on Friday and overnight in the Bay area if your looking for a full two day ride, but that'd mean you lazy Sac area fools would have to actually GET UP EARLY ! :D

I don't see how that could be done. So . . .

PAR - TAYYY AT THE HIGHLANDERS!!!

Bring your sleeping bags, open host bar.

Fixed it for you Dave -- now we can make it. :p

OR . . . I kinda like the option of meeting in Windsor and riding 1 up the coast from Jenner to Fortuna for another throw down at the Eel River Brewery. (Here's hoping that you and Bluestreek can hold yer liquor enough to refrain from giggling and putting sexual orientation signs on our guests' motorcycles after they retire.)

. . . on a motorcycle. In a car, it's a great place for anybody, including F-15 pilots, to get carsick. But that could be a pretty good definition of a motorcycle road, couldn't it? I kind of prefer taking 1 northbound, too. Little more margin for error. No guardrails, no shoulder, just a 95,000 foot tumble into the ocean. And you WILL be tempted to gawk at the view.

Kinda like this

And yeah, I know what I said about guardrails, but they do have a few feet of 'em, and I liked this piccie.

And you'll be so glad to be away from Southern California by then anyway.

Another possibility for Saturday evening is to stay at the Fern Grove Cottages in Guerneville instead of Wndsor. Very close to town and a short walk to a beach on the river. They have facilities for BBQs for a large group as well. If there is enough interest, I can contact them for any group discounts for that evening.

I was talking about the state landscape, geography, and some of the people who live there. But yeah, why get everybody angry at me 4 1/2 months early...when I can do that when I'm there in May?? Of course I'm a kiss ass...whoops, there goes my forum title.

I definitely will as places get pinned down. As soon as the weekend meet gets figured out-which is happening soon- I will post some MS S&T maps of the daily routes. I know Rich has already thrown 36 and 299 in there...I'll look at 44 as well.

I think after the relatively lower miles of the weekend meet, I will be riding some higher mileage days with Rich...at least that's how it is planned right now. I'm sure on some of the days I could check down to a lower mileage, but quite frankly, I'm out here to ride the roads, cuz who knows when I will ever get back, so Mon-Wed can be higher mileage days. Thursday will be a shorter day so I can chat with my Uncle and catch a breath before the long ride east.
