I have questions about asking a question. Can someone help me? :flirt:
I have questions about your question regarding asking questions. Are you questioning the preferred method of asking a question? Are you questioning the usefulness of asking questions? Are you questioning the intelligence of asking questions that have already been asked?

I'm sorry, what was your question again? :uhoh:

Honestly I feel a little badly about how I have treated some of the "Noobs" with their questions now that I have seen some of it from a different perspective. In some cases I wish I had shown more kindness and sensitivity. In others I wish I had been even meaner and nastier.

As for you dcarver, I cannot imagine having an answer for any question you might ask but I am always here and willing to offer whatever help I can give. You certainly deserve it. :)
I think you did a most excellent job answering my question, RFH!

When you underStand how much you don't understand

You're getting an understanding of how much you don't understand.

Understand?

LOL

It was a bunch of unshaven, unshowered, *** starved Mountain men (aka: Sheep feckers). Some of whom were hornier than a three peckered billy goat on a constant basis. Bust'in ballz would of been a lightweight term. My sick-*** just got a kick out of it. I already belonged to a bunch of "stuff-shirt forums" and this one was soooo opposite. It was truly a breath of "Mountain fresh air" one might say (or said). This combined with our beloved 2-wheeled sport made it unique-koool

Maybe it was all that mountain-hillbilly talk combined with their precious 4-legged furry sexual desires that had some {here} shaking heads and shrugging their shoulders... but thinking back (in a weird kind of way) "dat twas refreshing!". Only thing I could compare it to would be kinda like watching the movie "Deliverance", when.... you are high as a kite

.........oh man, that's entertainment beyond any wording. Let's move on before I get banned (again!)

So, forum-wise, you did get your answer (eventually). Maybe once in awhile (yeah, probably more often than not- lol)... you were left scratching your head at all of the twisted ruminate-animal jibber. And as Mr.Stanley would say right about now... 'nuff said!

Glad the Forum is now on the "up and up"

Sometimes the n00bs don't know what they don't know so they can't ask a good question, and then Forumites jump on them for being uneducated, which in the end was the start of asking the question.

As the speed and functionality of the Forum deteriorates I have become a lot more tolerant of questions that have been answered in excruciating detail over and over again, including drawings, pictures and links. While some of my replies may not have the detail that something new might get I do try to supply the inquirer a path to higher learning with links and hints.

Wow, that was a long (posting time) one. I had time to check 2 other forums and come back before that one even posted! (Thank you whomever invented Tabs!) So, maybe the OJ Simpson trial is still on?

*UPDATE* this has changed as well.

I did not notice this thead until today. I've read some very interesting responses and thought I'd add mine (though not saying mine will be interesting).

I joined when I realized that my high-mileage BMW was getting to the point where expense repairs were coming sooner than later. I joined this forum, as well as forums for the ST and Connie. I was already a member of a BMW forum. I wanted to learn as much as I could about the bikes so I could make an informed purchase. Once I decide on the FJR, I continued to look for as much information as possible to guide me so I would make the best decision when it came time to select a bike for purchase. Once the purchase was made I wanted to learn all I could about maintaining and modifying my 06.

It was clear from there very beginning that this forum was unlike what I had found on most other forums. gixxerjasen said it very well back on page 2:

Of all the forums I've been a member of, this one has had perhaps the strangest personality to it. On one side, the amount of good technical information is astounding. The bin o facts pages and comparison matrix are positively fantastic. The pictorals by mcatrophy are amazing and superbly helpful. At the same time there's a large amount of BS to sift through and some serious animosity issues.

I frankly post less here than other forums I belong to, because there is an aggressive element here that i do not wish to stir up
This here is a sad thing for a member to post. I have to agree that it is largely true though. I spend more time sifting through search engines trying to see if I'm going to get slammed for asking something rather than actually trying to find the solution.

Hell, I personally think its easier and more acceptable to kill a human being in the middle east than it is to ask a question round here.
I'd like to change this and point out that it's much more acceptable for someone to offer bad advice or to talk about sheep shagging than it is to ask a question.

On a completely unrelated forum I poked around on I tripped across a post by one of the moderators from a while back. A new guy was getting slammed for not using the search feature and I wish I could find it but it was perhaps the most elegant and insightful response I've ever seen to this type of thing. One of the better points was that just because something has been asked before and answered, doesn't necessarily mean the answer is the best answer or still relevant. Oil threads come and go, but if we had a member ask about tires back when the 2003 FJR came out and then regarded the thread as answered, it would be completely irrelevant today because of the number of different tires that have been released since and many have been discontinued.

I'll never understand the animosity that happens when someone asks a question. If you are annoyed that it's been answered before, move on. That's way easier than to open the thread...wait for it to load, then type your response, and then wait for it to post. I also don't understand how the forum with the worst search function ever is the one where folks are most likely to get all bent out of shape telling them to search.

I've also managed to notice that it all depends on who you are on the forum. Two folks can ask the same question and one goes straight to NEPRT while the other receives lots of attention.

All in all though I stick around because this level, quality, and quantity of information for the FJR simply cannot be found anywhere else. I've gotten to know quite a few of the members and have a great amount of respect for them. I thoroughly enjoy reading the adventures of folks like Gary and seeing Tyler's photos. This is one I frequent every day, and while I enjoy it, I also recognize that it could be better.

RH, not sure if this is what you are looking for but there's my feelings out there...let the banning begin.

Others followed with posts that demonstrated that gixxerjasen was not the only one who thought this way. I know I certainly was turned off by the posting which somewhere along the way I labled as 'inane'. That, along with a question I posed about the vulgarity and crudeness of some members set off a bit of a firestorm on a Sunday many months ago. I bring this up because those first interactions with the site: reading through page after page of unrelated and crude personal bantering, and the backlash for bring it up...these things really put the damper on any interest I had in getting together with members of this board. I realize that it is likely that the majority are very nice people, but the bad taste remains. It is a familiar story, the actions of a few can quickly spoil things for the many.

I would also like to give my thoughts on asking questions. While there are no doubt many newer and some old members who do not take the time to do any searching, the biggest roadblock to finding what you want is trying to decide how to phrase the search. I have search to the point of frustration, using multiple search titles trying to find something just so I do not have to endure the snide remarks or be made to look stupid. If a person has read and searched without finding then they should be encouraged to ask. Isn't one of the main function of this site the exchange of information? If you don't want to answer because you've answered 10 times before, then just let someone answer. There are people who don't mind, who actually like, being helpful.

I fully realize that since the moderators have greatly reduced the proliferation of inane posting this site has become a much nicer place to visit. But...keep in mind that though the site has come along way all those old off-topic posts are still there to dig through when you are trying to find information on setting the valves. Give the searchers a break and just answer the question. It takes pretty much the same amount of time it take to tell them to do a search.

^^This^^. I've gotten together in places like Wellsboro, PA; Marlinton, WV; Johnson City, TN and Lake George, NY with members of another more tolerant forum and have thoroughly enjoyed myself. But the "bad taste remains" and I can't imagine having enough tolerance or patience to deal in person with the mob mentality of this place. I'm quite sure this is by no means an accurate reflection of any individual but an individual conducts him/her self like Mom taught- the mob just stands around watching folks get gang ***** all the while pointing, laughing and waiting his turn to join in the fun.

I find it sad that there are folks here that make others feel badly about themselves. Because of a few A-holes... we are all stereotyped as a-holes. I guess people should suit themselves. I just returned from EOM which was great fun.
