I'm putting my highway pegs on Saturday morning. Finally! Yes, I've been a bit busy making money lately. So this weekend looks perfect weather-wise and I only have one other task to do before I can head out, which is change the oil in the car, then I can go play! All weekend!

OK, well there is a purpose for this trip and that is to try out those new pegs. I want to see how far I can go on them without stopping. Hoping for big improvements with my knee pain issues. So I'm looking for a 200-300 mile trip, one way, since I can't leave until sometime after lunch Saturday. Gotta be back Sunday evening. Hotel cost is not an issue for me, so somewhere nice, but i also need ideas on this in some locations.

These locations have come across my mind in the past hour:

Fredericksburg - need hotel info

Galveston - need hotel info

Shreveport - i would want to do the Horseshoe

Talihina - need hotel info

Austin - maybe too close to home?

I've been to Austin and Shreveport before, the others would be new to me, which is very cool. Galveston is the farthest, would probably be arriving for a later supper though. oh well! works for me!

So where to? Anyone wanna come with? Or meet me somewhere and have dinner if you live near one of these locations? I'm gonna PM some of you boys and see what your doing this weekend! My plans are completely up in the air, so now's the time to join me! :D

I'd avoid Galveston. You get that stupid Glen Campbell song stuck on your mind, leading to rapid mental deterioration. It's a safety issue.

You'll like the pegs. They're not far enough out to let you really stretch out your legs, but being able to move them to a different position helps. It also changes the pressure points on your posterior. And, you'll like how having your legs out there can cool you off on a hot day.

By the way, did I ever mention that my great, great granddad was mayor of Ft. Worth? He got elected by promising to reopen the saloon/red light district. A real people's politician.

<snip>Talihina - need hotel info
Talihina does have a motel (or, did) -- I stayed there several years ago on a dual-sport ride in The Winding Stair Mts. It's a pretty small town.....not at all like the others you're mentioning.

Well, Fredericksburg's not too big -- but, Talihina's really small and old fashioned (just the kind of place I'd choose). :)

Here's a plan.....do the loop. Take 35w south till it meets up with 35e....then, go north on 35e till it meets up with 35w....take 35w south till you get to your departure location.....should be close to 200 miles. And don't forget to hit carls corner on the east side.

I hear the accommodations in Lewisburg WVA are rather nice. Dallas ain't THAT far away.
I'll just wait for u to get here next weekend!

You'll have to do the highway pegs Friday. My back seat is open on Saturday. :)
I wish I could dude!! EOM would be lotsa fun! Just can't make it happen though. I can't even go to my own SFO. Saturday night away is all I can do for now.

I really wanna do Galveston before a hurricane wipes it out but i think that will be a bit far for my schedule. we'll see.

The change in pressure points on my hinder is also another big reason for the longish ride that I forgot to mention. I'm planning a Russell purchase in December unless a miracle happens with the pegs. I'd like to be able to do at least 500 a day so I think a Russell will still be needed but i'll find out for sure.

That's very cool about your great great grandpa. i so woulda bought him a drink!

Thanks C! I may save Fredericksburg for another weekend when my buddy GPRider can go with so it may be Talihina this weekend. I think Shreveport will be more fun with a group than solo.

You're just figuring that out now?

fjrchik, suggest Y.O. Ranch Resort in Kerrville. I'm going there the weekend of October 19th to ride the Hill Country with my Nephew, so will pass on SFO this time. Eat a steak for me. :D

heck no. i've known Crash for too long. usually he's just on alcohol. ;)

if you ride talihina you could stay at the lodge. Not sure about how busy this time of year. The leaf lookers won't be out yet.

you could also stay in Mena AR.
oooo that's a cool idea paul - thanks! their rates aren't bad either. we stopped there on the way to SFO-1, i had forgotten about it though. maybe i'll stay there on the way to or from SFO next spring just for fun.

man fredericksburg is expensive compared to the other towns around it. i've already been to kerrville but am leaning towards going back there so i can ride the twisted sisters before leaving the area sunday. did it once in 2004 on my first FJR but now i want the shirt that says i did it! too bad the camera crew won't be there this weekend!

Looks like odot and i are headed to kerrville tomorrow! twisted sisters on sunday!

holla at me if u want to join us

Once again, your singular talent for ambiguity shines through. For those of us lacking mind-reading abilities, how was the weekend?

y'all have all the fun. i spent the weekend unloading our old washer and dryer to a buyer (the washer konked out so we had to order new ones). then, while the laundry room is empty, i patched the sheet rock where the drain backed up once, plastered, and then cut and prepped new baseboards where our dauschund did some chewing when he was a puppy. once the plaster is dry i'll install the baseboards and then paint the whole place. needless to say, it's been a non-riding weekend for me and i'm still not done (plaster still drying).

i did get the oil/filter changed on the bike last weekend in anticipation of SFO (WEEE).

M'kay, since yer ESP is T.U. I'll fill ya in since fjrchik apparently wants to keep it a secret. I get a text sat. morning saying, "just checked my rear wheel, cord showing....oh ****"....or something to that effect. So I ride the 112 miles to her friends house where they are tearing the rear wheel off for repair. Much fun was had by all at the pizza joint as we were waiting for the shop to mount/balance the tire. After reinstallation of the wheel and ingesting two gallons of water in the 90 degree weather I don't think anyone was in the mood to set off southward for "fun and twisties"....on top of pizza burps and some mild indigestion. So, there ya go, tejas.....bummer for all. The pizza was good, though....we shoulda made some local phone calls to see if anyone else wanted to get some pies in south fortworth.....oh, and bounce, sucks to be you.

If your going to stay in the Kerrville area, look into staying at the Koyote Ranch. It's just south of Kerrville in some of the prettiest parts of Hwy 16 and they cater to motorcyclists with cabins, tents or even a bed and B'fast.

As for Talihina, I've made reservations at the Lazy R Inn for a ride I'm doing the second weekend of Oct. There's also the Kiamichi Inn in Talihina. You can check for area lodging here. The Queen Wilhelmina Lodge is usually booked on weekends, but it's certainly worth a try.

I've also stayed at the Lime Tree Inn in Mena, AR. Not a bad place, but no Hilton.

And it's not the twisted sisters. It's the 100 mile loop! :) :p
