Buy 15W40 Rotella/Delvac/Delo most anywhere and pretend it is 20W40.
So I have to ask ... Are we talking putting in oil that's labeled for diesel engines? The reason I ask is that the only oil I can find around here that's 15w40 is Castrol GTX dino oil for diesel engines. Do these oils have higher ZDP concentrations?

Sorry to jump into the thread, but I'm having a tough time finding 'any' of the oils you guys have listed so am trying to find some other alternative than the hyper expensive racing synthetics.

ps .. I tried to find the essay by Jestal on oil, but had no joy. Did it die in the last site hacking??

Yes, these are considered diesel oils. But besides the diesel rating of C?, if you look, they also have the S? ratings for gasoline engines. They are not just diesel oils.

Many prefer the diesel oils as they have a robust additive package since they are designed for the rigors of a diesel engine. All the better for your gasoline engine. No more ZDP than any other oils as that is limited by emissions warranty (catalytic converter).

I get my Rotella 15W-40 at WallyWorld for less than $8 a gallon. Delvac and Delo are there also. They should be readily available elsewhere.

As for the outstanding Jestal oil thread - it was on the EZboard until recently when it was dumped for being too old. Damn shame. Stupid EZboard. That doesn't happen with our threads.

Thanx Skoot.

Unfortunately there's no Wallyworld in my neck of the woods. Costco, WallMart and even Crappy Tire don't carry Rotella et al. The only Mobil1 products I've been able to find all have the friction modifiers in 'em so they're out.

I've got some info from Shell Canada that I'm going to try to use to find a Rotella source. We're talking this stuff right? Shell Rotella info

Wish me luck as I really hate to use the synthetic liquid gold that the dealers sell at $40 a gallon for the crotch rocket squid crowd.

If they have Mobil products they should have the Delvac oils. Look at a truck stop type place.

There is also and Esso marketed diesel oil in your area I suspect that would be the equivalent product to the Rotella/Delvac/Delo oils. Look at the fine print on the label. It should indicate API service grades for diesels in a variety of CC,CD type ratings and also gasoline ratings of SL,SM, etc....

Hi Jestal.

Been surfing the Canadian Esso and Shell websites and have tracked down some industrial distributors in the area. Going to check them out tomorrow.

The Delvac type you're talking about is this?? - Delvac 1300 Super 15W40

Appreciate the time guys as it's a bit of a challenge to match differing label types for different countries.

The Castrol GTX I buy for a reasonable price in Texas is (from the label):

"SAE 10W40 API service SL, exceeds API service SM/SL/SJ/SH; exceeds the engine protection requirements of ILSAC GF-4, GF-3 and GF-2 for API certified Gasoline Engine Oils. Also exceeds all passenger car and light truck manufacturers' warranty requirements for the protection of gasoline and turbo charged engines where API SM, SL, SJ or SH is recommended."

The self-promotion statements on the container say:

"A premium multi-grade oil, providing all-season protection."

Also: "CASTROL GTX is engineered to provide maximum protection against BOTH viscosity and thermal breakdown."

And: "Not for sale outside the Americas."

I don't understand why Castrol can't be found in Canada. It is available everywhere here.

Bob

They probably don't want the outside world to see the crappy oil that we use in the states.

Castrol's Tection Extra 15W-40 heavy duty diesel oil is equivalent to the Rotella, Delvac, and Delo diesel oils. It has all the diesel oil ratings as well as the SL rating for gasoline engines.

I've used the Rotella, Delvac, and Tection Extra oils in my FJR. Based on ease of transmission shifting the Tection Extra seems to last longer than the other two. At approximately 3,000 miles the shifting becomes more difficult with the Rotella and Delvac. With the Tection Extra the shifting quality is good for 4,000+ miles.

I used the Rotella 5W-40 synthetic for one change. I couldn't detect any difference in this oil from the non-synthetic oils. It may have a longer life but I'm ready to change at 4,000 miles.

My favorite continues to be the Tection Extra.

I can get Rotella at Walmart, Sam's club, and Advanced Auto Parts. I believe you can even get free shipping from Advanced if you buy a couple cases.

I have a source locally for the Mobil1 Delvac Synthetic 5-40. Gonna give that a try next time around.

When my dealer replaced the valves under warranty, they used 10W40.

They put it in writing on the service log.

Must be OK.

Appreciate the help Bob. We actually have Castrol in the mass market type stores. It's the others I've discovered that are hard to find in the 'normal' locations. Had to sniff them out so to speak.

If folks are ever trying to find a certain oil product and are having no luck at the local stores, give the manufactures websites a check for a local wholesaler. I had good success talking with these folks and they gave me contacts to get what I was looking for. Even a tech support number to ask questions.

The one thing an esso tech support guy mentioned he wasn't 100% sure about regarding diesel oils in motorcycles was how they would perform at high RPM for long periods since diesels usually rev at low rpms. Otherwise he said the latest API designation is SM for the industry and that the diesel oils that meet the minimum spec listed in the owners manual will cover the OEM requirements.

All in all this has been a good education .... :D Thanx

I have always been a Red Line oil user. So, I asked them what to use, since 20w40 is only a Yamaha idea. . I asked about 20w50 and 10w40. They suggested 10w40. Heavier oil is often the wrong way to go. The lighter vis. moves better, cooling better.

I use only the best Extra Virgin Olive oil in mine. My exhaust smell is kind of like fried chicken cutlets..

Should I be worried? :tease:

I make my own lubricant by mixing together-- in a blender-- the two most slippery substances known to man: ice and banana peels. No problems in twelve miles since my last change....
