Is this any better?

NH-VT Rev-1

I found VT Rte-100, I think. Looks like it runs mostly North-South and might be a better choice on my way TO Portland (near #17) than AWAY from Portland.

This revision still keeps me passing through the corner of Mass. in the morning after staying the night in Searsburg VT (#28).

I created this route by plotting the major points with S&T, setting the route preferences to avoid Interstates and Toll Roads, and then filling in enough points to force both S&T and Garmin to follow the same path.

Beyond that, Iris and some other NY folks have given me direct feedback which resulted in a few changes.

Very nice.

I'll review it with more detail later.

Anything imparticular caused you to choose this specific route?

thanks

Any of the "notches" (Franconia, Crawford, etc...) are good, Kancamangus Highway, Mt. Washington, Portsmouth NH for a nice seaside town, Vermont 100 if you are heading up from PA......
You might want to go north along the western shore of Lake Champlain and take the ferry over to Burlington VT and then across to NH from there.
The roads Axeman listed are the ONES to ride. And if you ride it Vermont check out RT 17 between Bristol and Waitsfield. PM me for more details.

Tom

Looks good.

If it's the Maine coastal experience you want, you may want to forgo Portland proper in favor of a more scenic piece of coastline. Portland is a city and the waterfront, while recently improved, is still a commercial seaport. But you don't have to go far up or down the coast for it to return to the post card scenes.

I'll defer to one of the forum Maine-iacs to chime in with suggestions, but there are little state parks up and down the coastline that would be perfect for a short stop, leg stretch and viewing of the frosty cold Atlantic water. Some you could even take a dip, should you be so inclined. It's... urhm, invigorating... even in July and August. I highly recommend it.

Vermont Tom knows from where he speaks. Rte 17 is famous as the twistiest, turniest, up and downiest piece of road around. Guys run up and down it on bikes all day long sometimes. It's like a mini-dragon.

Sites and roads worth considering so far:

Kancamangus Highway

Covered Bridges

Castle in the Clouds

116, 118, Rte 10 along the Ct river

Mt. Washington (Largest Mt.) and/or Portsmouth NH for a nice seaside town

Vermont 100

Pemaquid Point

Portsmouth NH for a nice seaside town

RT 17 between Bristol and Waitsfield. PM me for more details (PM Snikr fpr more details)

My goals for this trip are:

* See places in/around New England I've never seen.

* See Niagra Falls. Never been there.

* Stay off the slabs as much a possible.

* Hug the mountains all the way from the southern Appalachians north through NY state.

* See the New England coast. Commercial ships are okay. I like big boats. Around my area of the coast all you see are tatoos and bikinis. :)

* Pass through as many NE states as possible without going anywhere near places like Boston.

* Ride north this summer instead of west in the 100+ heat.

* Git-R-Done in 10 days or less.

* Be smart enough to ask somebody who knows the area for guidance with planning.

Oh yeah, last but not least...

* Target Marriott Courtyard hotels wherever possible. The GF loves those big, fluffy pillows.

:)

If you are going far enough north, Acadia National Park.

Portsmouth has Strawberry Bank (group of old homes) to tour and John Paul Jones (One of the first admirals of the US AND Russia in the 18th century) which I visited a lot as a boy. If you are into history JPJ's house was fun. Otherwise I'd personally forego Portsmouth if time is an issue and head further north. I spent every summer (and a couple winters) in Southern New Hampshire for 30 years; which means some of my impressions are clouded by 20 years since, and possibly changed.

Jeff,

We'll take a closer look at your route this weekend. At first glance, you can't go wrong taking Rt. 219 North all the way thru West Virginia. There is a route thru PA., that runs more West (from Carlisle) to East (one of Randy's freinds suggested it to us for our return route from Randy's ride last July...very nice) we'll have to look in our files. We would suggest taking Rt. 30 North from Rt.17, once you get into New York up to your route onto Rt.3. More to come.

ZOOMM,

I live in York PA (about 30 minutes south of Randy). Rte 30 goes right through the heart of York City and can be a 4 lane cager hell. Route 30 also goes through Lancaster (Amish country), though the sites can be nice, 30 is not the place to see it. Going up through Carlisle might be a better option then turn East near 81/83. Either way, I'd suggest avoiding Rte 30 from York City to Lancaster.

JeffAshe,

I would suggest looking North of Harrisburg (unless you want to visit Hershey Park).

BTW, if you do make it to York, PA and need a place to stay, shoot me a PM and lets see if I can help.

I forgot to add one VERY important route goal...

STAY OUT OF THE FORBIDDEN ZONE (State of VA) as much as possible!

No Radar Detector = No Fun

:)

Keep the suggestions coming. I really do appreciate it. I know the southern Appalachians like the back of my hand. But north of that Manson-Nixon line is uncharted water for me. Only been there via airplane!

If Maine is in your plans, do as ShinypartsUp said and go to Acadia National Park and its primary town, Bar Harbor. Lots of summer traffic going and coming but still well worth it. Weekends and Friday are worse. You can prolly spend a day or more right there and its all about mountains that run into the ocean. Certainly one of the prettiest places you'll ever go.

The southern Maine coast has some nice riding but is fairly congested. Take the beach route from Kittery thru York Beach, Kennebunkport to Cape Porpoise over to Biddeford. Do I-295 to Coastal Rte 1 in Brunswick. There are many neat roads all along the coast that go down the peninsulas (like to Pemaquid) from US 1. Other excellent stops are Boothbay Harbor, Rockland, Camden (Go up Mt Battie), Belfast, and don't forget AcadiaNP!

Better yet, give me a call if you want a personal tour guide.

What are you going to do the next day? You might also consider Flume Gorge and Bridal Veil Falls. This in Franconia, which Axe mentioned earlier, I don't think you will be disappointed spending a few hours in that area.

Hey Guys

You both might want to check out this site New England Riders. I don't know if it will help but it's worth a look. It showes nice rides in New England. They also have an 8 day loop from Mass. to WV.
