Update to plan:I will be detouring to Niagra Falls
That is a great detour. Staying off the NY state throughway slab and ride along the lake front will be far more enjoyable.

and time constraints require me to cut Portmouth out.
One small modification that I would suggest on this part of the loop based on some local knowledge: After you come down off Mt Washington, take a right on RT 302 in Glen. Follow 302 for a short distance to the village of Bartlett. In Bartlett center take a left onto Bear Mountain Rd. Bear Mt. Rd goes up and over the ridge (up, down, nice twisties) then drops you into the Swift River Valley on the Kancamagus (Rte 112). The main poiint is that will bypass the congested villages of North Conway and Conway. Unless you're looking for some Factory Outlet shopping, you don't want to roll through North Conway. Besides Bear Mt. Rd is a hoot. It is steep enough that they close it during the winter months, but in summertime it's a great detour.

+1 on what Fred said here. I took Bear Mt. Rd over the summer and it was a hoot.

No, I don't plan on doing in outlet shopping :D ; so, I'll look into those changes.

Thanks for the insight

Followed your suggestions on the map; however, the only way I can get to my camping spot (point #21) is through Conway. Also too, I was unable to locate a Bear Mountain Rd, but did find a Bear notch Rd. Are these the same road?

I'll keep lookin for a way other than Conway to get to Chocorua Camping Village.

I believe it is Bear Notch Rd. I've been over it many times and it is a hoot. Last fall it wasn't in great shape but still fun. And way better than outlet mall shopping.

I'm sorry. Brain flatulence. It is indeed Bear Notch Rd. That's what I get for doing it from memory instead of Map-Questing the location. I'm blaming my memory loss on my cholesterol meds. It's all the rage these days...

To get to Chocorua, take Bear Notch Rd anyway, then go left on the Kancamagus (Route 112) instead of right. That will bring you back over to Rt 16 just south of Conway, but will have detoured around all of the North Conway and Conway congestion and provided some nice roads to ride on. In the morning you will have to retrace your steps a bit, back up 16 (which you were already planning on doing) and then west on 112 to the intersection of the Kanc and Bear Notch Rd, but it isn't very far up the Kanc and is a nice section to ride.

After looking at your VT part of the ride I could come up with a couple of ideas but it looks like you have most of it covered. You'll be going right by where I live so if you need anything let me know.

Cool! I may call just to say hey, if nothing else.

What suggestions would you have me consider?

Just a little teaser for you boys making this trip next summah. I was getting a little case of cabin fever and the sun was out so I decided to jump in the cah and shoot up to Lincoln, NH this after noon and take a little trip up the Kank.

Here's a few winter shots of the view from along the road today...

View from the top:

Those snow banks are pretty high up there...

And then a few shots out the car window on the road back down. There are really no good places to pull over as the road is only plowed 2 lanes wide the whole way. So I shot these "on the roll"...

Well Ahl bee derned. Thankyee much thar FredW fer the peekchures. Purdy good shots from the cah. :)
Glad you liked 'em Jeff.

The main point of the excursion was to get out and play around some with my new camera. I decided that I really didn't want to spend the big bucks for a full fledged Digital SLR, so bought a Kodak Z812 IS. It's an 8 mega pixel with 12x optical zoom (hence the 812). It looks like that is going to be the perfect camera for the uses I have intended and only set me back $200. It's considerably smaller and lighter than any SLR, perfect for carrying on the bike.

While it does have some manual modes, those "on the roll" pics were obviously shot in point and shoot mode. In fact the one out the side window I didn't even frame the shot, just held the camera to the side and shot.

But. in the name of complete and open disclosure, those views aren't likely to be quite so nice when you come to visit though, with the summer heat comes added humidity and haze. I was up at that same spot this past summer on a nice warm day (did I mention it wasn't warm in the least yesterday?) and this is what the same view looked like then:

Sport....I've sent you some PM's. I have a couple of ideas for your routes.
Tom

Tom,

Thanks...Got-em, and have responded.

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner...life got busy.

Look forward to your ideas.

Rick.

I've sent you a PM with a couple of detours for your VT route. I think you'll enjoy them if you have the time. And do the RT 17 ride! Here is a photo I took at Smugglers Notch a couple of years ago on a fall ride. You couple see this.

Plus this is what I drive through at least twice a day.

For your return loop take RT 100 just past the ONLY traffic light in Ludlow, VT (it'll be a left hand turn). Take RT 100 till you get to RT 155. It'll be a stop sign where you'll turn right on to 155. Take 155 till it ends at RT 140. Take a left on 140 and then a right (you'll only go about 100 yards). This will take you back to RT 103. Or you can just call me and I can show you the way. Easy huh?

Tom

SPORT,

Don't forget the bug (insect) spray. It's black fly and skeeter season in NE that time of year. They will carry your ass off! :dead:

And I'm just a little guy...maybe if I strap myself onto the FJR I'll keep from being carried off?

Thanks for the heads-up, that's good to know.
