Why yes as a matter of fact, Gen III paint is ****.

I've got a scuff mark on the tank where my jacket seems to be rubbing.
This seems like a good time to ask ....

Has anyone tried this stuff? https://3mauto.com/products/paint-defender/benefits
I have a friend that put something similar to that on his scoot. It is supposed to just peel off when you want to clean/wax under it or otherwise replace it. On his scoot, in some places it did just peel off; in other pieces it came off it little bitty pieces making it nearly impossible to get it all off. I was going to try it until I seen that. Now his front fender looks like he!!.
I appreciate this and Allen's responses. This did sound like something too good to be true.

That's too bad. Maybe he did not apply it correctly/sufficiently. My cases still look like I just applied the protector, but I hardly every mount them on the bike. And although the tank trim is peeling a little, I believe it will peel off completely. Keep in mind that it has been on the trim for almost 11 months/16k miles. I plan to clean the trim this winter and reapply!

Yeah, he knows he didn't get some of it on quite right because it looks a little like orange peel. I think he sprayed his on in APR or MAY of this year.

Cool. I may give it a try. Thx

Thanks, guys, for giving me another reason to avoid this POS and continue to slavish absolutely NO love and care on my faultless 2004.

Now, tell me again how the Gen III is so "much more refined" than a Gen I or Gen II. I'll bet all your Porsches are paid for, too! :p

I love the logic...

One guy pipes up that he thinks that his 2013 may have softer paint than his prior year bikes based on the number of rock chips he sees in the finish.

And the conclusions (based on a scientific sample size of 1) is that:

1) This is an unquestionably truth

2) Because his is a 2013, all 2013's must have softer paint

3) Since, 2013's are third gens...all third gens have soft paint

4) A bike with softer paint is not worth having regardless of any other attributes

Fred, I think you're using too broad a brush to paint your 4 point thesis. I really comes down to one simple fact -- ANY Gen other than a Gen I is a POS. It really IS that simple. Don't over-think it.

I tried the 3M spray on film and it did not meet my needs. It is not clear. It leaves a slightly cloudy finish. I use the 3M clear film which can be purchased in various widths. It is not expensive and holds up well.

Interesting...I applied the Paint Protector as I indicated previously and found it to dry clear and be barely discernible. When apllying, it will appear very cloudy/milky and have a bluish tint.

I am curious about the clear film though. Do you have a link?

See post #1 and post #39. That's two who seem to have some pretty strong imperial evidence. Don't worry though, as a Gen II owner, I can tell you the last thing anyone would ever do on this forum is talk **** about the new gen bike's, or try to constantly reinforce that the previous version is better. There's a big group of ODDS on here (one and three) that will surely be talking **** about my Gen IV when I replace mine with that, and the Gen V will come along and again be the kitty's *****'s.....

hmmm..at 38K on my Gen III, i have less nicks/scrapes/smudges/rock marks than I remember having on my Gen I or my Gen II at this mileage...hell, it's still what I would call pristine, and that after riding at least one dirt/gravel road every couple of months on it. Go figure.

Alan_C, Go to Amazon.com and input 3M Clear Bra Paint Protection Bulk Film Roll. You will have many choices of width and length rolls from $20 for 6"x48" and up. This 3M material is the real ****. Do not buy the other brands as they do not comply as well as 3M. Use a heat gun when applying to contours in order to eliminate wrinkles. Follow the instructions regarding prep and wetting the surfaces. I've used this stuff for a number of years and it holds up very well. It can be removed easily if needed.

Precisely.. gen l's are the **** and the rest only wish they were as refined.

I'm calling Akjitsu a chronic complainer First it was the cruise control, now it's the paint whats next the air in the tires smells funny?
Don't forget the complaint about the visor on his Shoei not being dark enough and the inside of his helmet getting too hot.

Now that I know about the soft paint I can save all that money I was about to spend. What a POS the Gen3 has turned out to be.

Really? Soft paint? This is definitely a First World Problem.

Yeah... save your money. Those 3rd gen FJRs are crap.

Take it from a guy that has one.

Would I steer you wrong?
