I only sell the one size since that's seems to be the consensus. 5" version Not that I can't make the odd ball someone wants on occasion.

FWIW, the 5" version is perfect. You can use a longer ram arm to get the GPS up higher above your tank bag, and not have a non-moveable nut-sack remover sticking up over the tank.

I have a Garmin Numi. The supplied crfadle has a smaller ball size than the RAM mount, and I haven't been able to source a RAM arm that has 2 different ball sizes. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious. Do I need to buy another GPS cradle that has a 1" ball on it, along with the correct RAM arm? Any help appreciated.

Joe,

You didn't mention which model nuvi you have. To RAM mount a Garmin nuvi you end up not using that small ball / socket in the back of the GPS's car cradle. Depending on the model there are RAM cradles that allow you to attach one of their 1" balls to the back of the GPS.

Here's one page that shows the nuvi 700 series RAM cradle. You'll note in the below picture that the RAM cradle (RAM-HOL-GA26U) clips right over the Garmin supplied cradle with the electrical connections in it. The diamond shape area on the back is where you attach the rest of the RAM mount to.

So the complete RAM mount solution for a Nuvi 700 series would be the RAM-B-174-GA26U on the above linked page, which includes the above 700 series cradle, and comes with the balls on both ends and the extension arm, and a clutch/brake mount that can also be used to clamp to the bars next to the clutch/brake. It looks like this:

I am getting some pause on this. Maybe some of the guru's here can help assuage my fears!

Can I mount this on the RAM-BONE or am I asking for trouble? I am worried that the screw attaching the base to the rod may not be able to handle it?

Touratech mount and Garmin 478. I can't find any information on what this contraption (mount) weighs. The garmin 478 weighs 400g (with battery).

Sam, if that contraption mounts on a RAM ball, you'll have no problem. If it mounts to a crossbar or something other than a 1-inch RAM ball, then it won't work. The RAM-Bone is a pretty nice unit, but is not absolutely theft-proof. It uses the two 10-mm tank hold-down bolts to secure it in place. That is a vulnerability as are most RAM attachment arms.

Thanks Tom. It attaches to and will work with a 1 inch RAM ball or so says the manufacturer, so I will probably be OK. As for being absolutely theft-proof? What is?

I received my five inches of well-machined Ram Bone (insert copyright symbol here) late last evening. Dry fitted it on the bike, and it's going to serve many needs for many years!

I do have three questions, though.

First, do the bolts holding the Ram Bone and gas tank to that part of the bike need to be replaced with longer ones, or will the existing bolts work?

Second: If the existing bolts need to be replaced, what size and length works best?

Third: Is blue locktite or any other type of thread sealer recommended, or are the bolts installed dry fine?

No, they do not have to be any longer, but... because you have a second gen bike, which is well known to come with tank hold down bolts made of soft cheese, I would recomend going to the local hardware purveyor and getting some bolts of the same size and pitch to replace them. They do not need to be any longer. You'll still get plenty of thread engagement with the RamBone in place, I would recomend finding some with a 10mm hex head rather than the allen head like the 2nd gen stockers to allow easy tightening without having stripped out heads in the future.

No locktite of any kind is required in my experience. You'll have those puppies on and off on a regular basis for under tank maintenence.
