So, some very depressing news on my brand new R1.

Took it to the dealer to have my break-in period / first service maintenance completed. To make a long story short, the dealer accidentally dropped my bike when loading it on to the lift stand. The bike fell to the right and we are already north of $3K in damages. Of course I'm pissed; not at the dealer or tech but at the situation (accidents happen) - glad no one was hurt, but the bike will never be "quite" the same - even with brand new OEM factory parts. I have no idea how long it's going to take them to get everything ordered and shipped to the dealer, right now I'm being told 3-5 business days, but I'm concerned that since it's such a new bike and new generation of the R1 that parts are going to be incredibly hard to get.

Anyway, had to vent and put it out there. I was so livid that I literally almost puked in my office at work when I got the phone call explaining what had happened, it took every part of me to not got off on the manager (I know he's just doing his job though).

Man I know that puking feeling. Last winter I was on the left side pushing my Ducati 999 up onto my lift and left the kickstand down. When the kickstand hit the ramp it caused the bike lurched to the right and there was nothing I could do to keep it from going over and trying to take me with it. I knew Ducati plastic would be expensive but I wasn't expecting $2500.00 in damages.

I'm sorry to read about this - I know you must be very upset about your new bike and the damage. But let me offer an observation for you to consider. Do not convince yourself that it "will never be the same".

When a woman is *****, no amount of money, therapy, justice, or anything else can replace what she will feel for the rest of her life. She truly will never be the same.

When a man endures an industrial accident that causes the loss of a limb, no matter what anybody does or says, he will never be the same.

But your bike is metal and plastic. It didn't come to you directly from a tree or field. It was assembled by humans and machines piece by piece. They put bolts and other fasteners that can be removed for a reason. The exact same pieces will replace the broken ones. I presume that your bike will be repaired by competent technicians who have the knowledge and experience to do it right. If you trusted them enough to do the break in service, they can certainly swap plastic pieces. Their work will be backed by the full faith of the Yamaha Motor Company for the duration of your warranty period.

And when it is done, your bike WILL be exactly the same.

The R1 doesn't have any feelings. The only thing that matters is how YOU feel when you ride it. If you convince yourself that it's "ruined forever", then that feeling will transfer to your riding experience for however long you own the bike. You will be cheating yourself out of the pleasure that you desired when you bought the bike. The dealer won't be able to help you there. He/she has fixed your bike and made his/her mistake right, which they were obligated to do, and have done. The only person that loses is you.

Tell yourself that it's OK. They are going to fix it right, and after that, it will be EXACTLY the same as it was when you brought it to them. Then resume enjoying your toy. Bring your camera with you and throw us a bone on the ride report thread every now and then.

I bought my '14 FJR brand new last year, my first new bike. I went ape **** bonkers after I wrecked it in October with only 6,000 miles. After a short while, I realized that it's just metal and plastic. I took my insurance proceeds and replaced it with an identical '14 with only 1400 miles on it. When I ride this bike, it feels EXACTLY the same.

Cheers!

Hppants - thank you. It's always in the the perspective, and you've allowed me the fortune of changing mine. It's encouraging. Thanks.

Very well written, pants. We get too wrapped up in our bikes. They are metal and plastic, as you say. No feelings other than what we transfer to them. I certainly love my FJR, but if something happened to it and I replaced it with another FJR, I'd be just as happy.

Actually, your R1 might even be better than it was before. I'm sure the shop you have doing the work is competent, or else you wouldn't have it there in the first place. I'd also like to think that the shop will make sure to be certain the bike is 100% before returning it to you. There might be some things that were missed during initial assembly that are now fixed.

Once your bike is fixed, enjoy it for what it is; a bad *** sportbike.

Wanted to give you all an update that I have had the bike back for several weeks and the thing is a beauty. Pants was correct as well, the dealer did a fantastic job getting everything worked out and fixed up to my standards and I don't feel as though anything was taken away or degraded from the bike. It's as if the accident never happened. So you can officially say "I told you so!" :)

I took it on a 135 mile ride down in southern Indiana Sunday and could not have had a better experience. The weather was perfection and the roads were clean and smooth - making it very enjoyable to hit the twisties hard.

Well now this is indeed very good news! I'm very happy to hear that all is well. Ride on, man!!

Now - about that 135 mile ride on Sunday..... far be it for me to doubt the word of a fellow forum member. But if there were any pictures, any and all doubt would certainly be removed. JSNS

Yeah, unfortunately I left the GoPro at home this ride. But I assure you the roads I traveled were fine. Now, I did not ride on 45 (which I believe is still currently closed) and that is the road I hear is an absolute nightmare still.

To give you an idea of the clear/smooth roads I traveled, here is the route I took from Greenwood: South on 135 down through Nashville, 46 just short of Bloomington to 446, across Lake Monroe all the way down to 58, west to 135, north up through Freetown & Story, and onward back up through Nashville/Morgantown/Trafalgar until 144 in Greenwood.

At times I was riding pretty hard/fast and never came across massive spots of gravel/sand or cracks/chunks in the road. Also, it appeared recent repaving had been done in multiple sections but had been done long enough ago that some mild weathering and driving had taken place - gave me reassurance that I didn't have to work about slipping or sliding on bare new asphalt. ;)

All good - just yanking your chain, man.

Like many of us forumites, I like looking at bike ****.... and yours is definitely 1st class bike ****!!!!!
