Attention Yamaha Super Tenere "Waiters" on our fine FJR Forum: No One and I have recently been having phone conversations about our soon to arrive Super Teneres and our thoughts on putting together a Rally/Rendezvous for US and the ST's. We have been talking about a Spring 2012 Get Together in Big Bend National Park in Texas. By then everybody will have their farkles mounted, such as luggage and guards, and be ready to tackle the many miles of trails in Big Bend Natl. Park. To whet your ST appetites, here is a slide show from BMW MOA Ambassador Voni Glaves, who lives 53 miles south of Alpine, Texas now with her husband Paul. Voni is well know to many on our FJR Forum, such as Ignacio, Warchild and SkooterG; Voni is a long time IBA/IBR competitor.

We were thinking April 2012, May and June are the two hottest months for the park so May is out! Niehart, Kevin, SPU and George would melt in 115F degree weather!

It can get as hot as 115-120° F along the river during late May and June. However, the temperatures will normally be in the range of 88-110° F during the hottest time of the year—the lower end of that range being in the Basin, the hotter temperatures along the river."

I might be up for a BBNP trip. Saw a lot of places I wished the FJR was able to go when I visited there last May. Hottest temp I saw was 102 next to the river mid May, it was a late spring last year.

For those of us in the NW, April can still be winter on the mountain passes and high elevations in Nevada and Utah. I can live with some temporary cold temperatures but snow and ice on the road is a deal breaker. If you want a time period that may work for everyone then it probably should be in the Fall.

You bet, im 100% in..... Ill call you again this week to see if I can catch you. To everyone, im willing to help, plan, organize, or anything that needs to be done so we can get as many riders out to join us.

I will probably be doing a Big Bend, NM, AZ, CO, loop this summer to test the bike and check out cool trails..

I'm looking forward to getting everyone together to have a great time ! I also have a domain name we can use for this "Super Tenere" group... Its www.NASTOG.com I dont have web site for it yet but would like to have informative ride info, Etc for Super Tenere 1200 riders / readers will have another place to read more 'stuff' and participate with rides, or plan your own group ride... :yahoo:

Yamaha says the S10's side bags are 32 and 29 liters. I think the effective storage area is 20-25 percent larger than the FJR's since they are top loading and you can easily utilize all the space.

There seem to be several numbers for the FJR's side case capacity but Iggy's measurements (using cups of water in each half) indicated that each bag actually holds 29 liters...and the only way you could come close to using all of it would be to take the case off the bike, lay it on the ground, fill each side, and then quickly slam the sides together.

I've actually done that...put the cases on their sides to load, I mean, not filling them with water. Stuff all the luggage in and shake the cases till they close.

The water idea occurred to me as something I would probably not do. Hats off to Iggy for taking the lead. I type as a dwarf in the presence of a giant.

OK. So,let's say it's just shy of 60 liters for the Feej and 61 l for the ST. Even with the top-loading feature, that's not enough difference to sway me to the ST for carrying capacity. Should I buy an ST, I will opt for no OEM cases and buy the aftermarket ones with the brackets that hold the left case away from the exhaust pipe. I can't remember the brand. I'm pretty sure those cases have the kind of carrying capacity we want over the FJR. A main complaint against our '05 FJR is the need for more carrying capacity. I mean, the wife can only fit a few extra pairs of shoes in the cases we have now. Whad'ya'gonna'do?

Meanwhile, while I really like the potential, being the conservative type, I will wait to see what the first year of US riding brings. WBill

Why doesn't some manufacturer get savvy and make a set of OEM top loading panniers? The top loaders would be easier to get into, and are less likely to seize up (denying access) in a tipover?

Many Thanks No One, I love your enthusiasm for our Yamaha Super Tenere 1200! So we have something to plan towards, I want to submit the dates of April 28 and 29 of 2012 to be the Saturday-Sunday Weekend for the FJR Forum Big Bend Super Tenere Rally. Friday, April 27 would be the arrival day in BBNP and then Monday, April 30 would be the departure day. I will work on an itinerary for both lodging and camping options, and look into activities such as rafting the Rio Grande and other excursions!

Man O man, it is getting close now to breaking out the credit card and ordering stuff. At present, it will be the SW Motech mounts and Trax cases (37 L left and 45 L right) in black for me. The rest of my list is too long to type :huh: . But it is going to be fun putting it all together. Hey Don, I might see ya in Cullman. All the other forums should be hit to get an entire USA response on a Super Tenere meeting (maybe Yamaha would be a sponsor or sumpin).

Just a word of warning:

If you read enough of sites like ADV (where riders actually take bikes off-road) -- hard side-cases (panniers) are often cited as causes for serious leg injuries (fractures) in tip-overs/crashes.

They (hard-sided panniers) seem to be a better on-highway accessory than off-road/trail equipment?

Since the Bags, both on the FJR or ADV Bike allow the Rider's leg more area to be Free From Contact by the Extra Depth given by Side Bags.

Perhaps those who have Experience(s) a Drop with their Bags ON or Off could elaborate.

For me, soft stuff is more better when you're getting scraped off the seat...

I'm no expert, by any means -- just an interested observer -- but, I think it may be alot like 3-wheeler/4-wheeler ATV issue; where the rider takes their foot off the foot-peg and then runs-over it...?

Off-road riders of dual-sport bikes (some) have reported lower leg injury from falling-over/crashing with hard-luggage mounted -- still enough forward motion (I guess?) to trap the leg (removed from the footpeg) and inflict damage on tibia/fibia/ankle bone.

Now if one rode off-road like a pro -- feet always on the pegs (maybe even standing on the pegs...?) -- this issue may be moot?

It seems, though, that it's present more in dual-sport w/hard-luggage -- kind of a set-up...?

I can see this being a possiblity IF with a ADV bike, one falls down and Happens to cradle a Rock/Other Object Between the Crash Bars and the Side Cases...otherwise this would seem unlikely.
