Just a little something we learned onthid trip and that is DO NOT leave your wallet laying around with Tom around.........

You can ask Russ why when u see him.

You wondered why Fairlaner's photos are hazy? It's the smoke..or speed, depending.

I offered flowers.

These are not often seen as stationary objects.

On Monitor Pass. Ebbetts pass was just a blur with Richard in the lead, so no pictures of deep snow.

Russ tries to make peace, but I'll have none of it.

Heading down 395 to Walker

EbbettsSonoraFJR025.jpg

Once again, going over Sonora Pass a supersonic speeds, the best scenery went unphotographed. Finally arriving in Strawberry on CA-108, Russ is deliriously happy about something. I think he wants to give me money.

OK - here's the story. We're in the thriving metropolis of Walker California, population 100 or thereabouts. We're in one of 2 prime eateries basically by default, since the other is actually closed. After a joyous meal of burgers and fries, its time to head south on 395 and head for Sonora Pass.

About 5 minutes in, I think to myself "wonder if my wallet is in one of my bags". I spend about 2 minutes digging through my tank bag (usual suspect) when I come to the conclusion that I've left it in Walker. I communicate to Rich that I'll have to turn back, so I flip a U and head screaming back to the burger joint. Usual panic ensues - ask the cute hostess if someone's turned it in - "no". Check around the table - nothing. Dig through the f'n garbage can - come up empty except for an arm covered in ketchup and mayo (thanks Fairlaner - only a Brit eats mayo on fries).

So now I'm freakin' out - I'm due to head to Europe on Saturday on business and I have no ID, no credit cards, and no ATM cards. Luckily I filled up on gas in Topaz so should have enough to get back to Sonora. Its back on the gas trying to make up time.

Now the gang has been nice and pulled off the highway to wait for me. As I'm approaching 108 I see Richard's flashing headlights behind me. Kinda cool - he tells me he has to hit triple digits to catch me. We do another quick search and still no luck, the wallet's gone.

So now I've got to get my head on straight - I've got serious issues to deal with when getting back to Sonora, but I've got to pay attention as 108 has some tricky miles, and I've decided I'm going to stick to Richard like glue.

We make the miles to Strawberry without incident, other than a few scary moments coming across gravel in an off-camber downhill turn. We get into the little tavern to order a couple of sodas and we're re-living my dilemna. Tom looks at me funny for a second, then pulls my wallet out of his pocket!

So its all good - wallet is in its rightful home, no problems paying my hotel bill or getting gas, but of course I have to check and make sure Tom hasn't pocketed my ATM cards. If this was a gag it would be funny as hell, but it seems that Tom just thought it was his and didn't think of it while I'm panicking about being in deep sh*t for my upcoming trip. I'm sure I called him a moth**f*cker at least a few times but we know that's not true - Tom's a great guy - just old age and a bad memory taking its toll. :yahoo: All I know for sure is that the wallet didn't leave my hand until Tom went his own way

Anyhow - great trip, some great photos, and beautiful roads. I'll upload a few pics later, but I've got to get home from my unexpected Las Vegas trip first (another story to tell).

Schnort!!! That was damn funny, once Russ's stress was relieved. Tom was completely oblivious -- while we sat in the shade waiting for Russ to catch up, over the top of Sonora Pass -- you shoulda seen his expression when he discovered that the missing wallet was in his pocket!!!

Great pics, Tom. Elizabeth has never seen a picture of herself that she liked, so that's the expression you get when she spies a camera pointed her way. :D Didn't realize you weren't going to turn on LaTrobe on the way home and I was behind those two cars, so it wasn't until I was speeding north on LaTrobe that I discovered you'd gone straight (you probably haven't swiped another wallet in that time, either :p ). Hope you get the new radio up and runnning -- will probably be easier to use and clearer to hear.

The new TK3101 radios were waiting for me at home, all programmed and ready to go. So I probably need to sell the TK3131 ProTalks now. The big thing is, I need a helmet that has space for the speakers and earbuds. It was damn uncomfortable in the tight-fitting Shoei RF1000. The RF1100 has spaces scooped out that seem to be much better, but I'm still tempted to go with a flip-up modular.

I just checked, and the wallet in my pocket is mine. :clapping:

As threatened previously, here are a few more photos from this week's trip......

Let's Start With Tuesday the 21st - free day in Yosemite so unfortunately the Valley and nearby roads were packed

Bridelveil Falls and the Merced River

Wildcat Falls - one of the less well known and photographed in Yosemite, but spectacular at high water - photo taken from lookout on Highway 41

This is another view of the waters running into Wildcat Falls taken at high water last year - it was taken from the bridge on Big Oak Flat Road that you can see in the previous picture

Richard above the Stanislaus River on 108. Not sure what he was smiling about - maybe he just farted?

On to Wednesday the 22nd - route was up Highway 4 with Fairlaner, TomInCA, and exskibum+Elizabeth

Hello Tom - I don't know that you're a thief yet so I still like you

The group at a turnout on Highway 4 - road is fast and smooth up until Bear Valley Ski Resort, then it gets narrow and windy. There are great views though all along that section from Pacific Grade Summit and Ebbetts Pass (but I have no pictures so maybe that's not really true?)

I think Rich has a serious case of envy going on here

View from Highway 89 headed up to Monitor Pass - Photoshop does a good job of stitching together shots but it minimizes the grandeur. This is actually a series of 6 photographs that was nearly a 180 degree view - truly breathtaking in person

Last shot of the trip - I still liked Tom here at Topaz Lake and was still taking pictures. The next stop was Walker where the famous Wallet-Grabbing incident occurred and there were no more pictures after that.

After that it was home again across Sonora Pass on Highway 108 and back to Sonora where it was something like a 105 degrees.
